The whole basis upon which the economy is built needs to change.
Reply
We need to create "real" products, not schemes to sell. We need to include everyone in the economy, not just the richest 5%.
The middle class has felt this pain for some time, no one seemed to care because the corporate world was raking in short sighted profits...now the effects are being felt by the wealthy as well.
I suppose we'll see some changes now.
The whole trickle down scheme does not work, there is no evidence that it does...and plenty it does not.-

According to a poll conducted by CNN, Americans blame Republicans over Democrats for the financial crisis by a 2-to-1 margin. That means that twice as many people out there are playing this "blame the current administration" game. Ahhhh ... the brilliance of the American voters. It is really no surprise if you consider where most people get their information– Entertainment Tonight. It is easy to sit back and just blame the Republicans, rather than trying to understand how we have gotten to this point. Look, I'm not saying that the Republicans didn't have a hand in this ... but Barack Obama has crept back up in the polls to take the lead over John McCain, and you don't think this has anything to do with the economy?
Reply
And just who was it that killed a Freddie and Fannie reform bill a few years ago? Why, that would be Democrats. And who was it that was saying everything was cool with Freddie and Fannie? Barney Frank; who is not, by the way, a Republican. And who has been pushing lenders to make loans to unqualified borrowers for two decades? Democrats again. Still, the message doesn't get out. Could that possibly be because of the media love affair with The Chosen One? -

I can't say for sure, but considering McCain's really starting to lose ground nationwide, one might think that's the reason for his wanting to back out of the debate this coming Friday night.
Reply
He can say that it's important for the parties to come together and solve this economic problem, but backing out of on debate now makes one wonder if he was prepared for the debate in the first place...I mean, it's only one debate... surely he can do that on a Friday night. He and Cindy can go out for a beer and pizza afterwards like the rest of us...
And if this economic problem of ours isn't solved soon...does that mean he will back out of all the debates? -

I have not seen the internals of this poll but it seems to be a little out of line of the other major polling done this week. Most polling did show Obama peaking over the weekend which is when this poll was taken. Since then the race seems to have become stabilized and has drifted ever so slowly back with Obama up by only 1 to 4 percentage points.

I agree, it seems like an outlier. However, have you seen the Fox poll out? It has Obama up by 6, 45-39. I've not seen the internals of that either, but Rasmussen is also recording a slight Obama bump when compared to yesterday or the day before. It now shows 49-47 (and it seems to take alot to move that one). Right now, Gallup is holding firm at 47-44. Very good news for Sen. Obama going into the first debate. The Gallup numbers seem just right and the other polls suggest the stabilizing we are seeing is about O+3 or O+4 and Rasmussen seems to show a positive trend for today for Obama as well.

Just yesterday, Hillary Clinton said that Barack Obama "is best suited to straighten out the country's economic problems." Question ... what in the wide wide world of balance sheets is she basing this on? What makes Hillary so sure that Barack Obama is the best candidate to handle the economy? What has he ever handled in his entire life? (Wait, don't answer that!) This is coming from a woman who said that "once we get through this immediate crisis," the country should look at some Great Depression-era type of governmental entity to deal with it. I'll tell you what came out of Great Depression politics ... big government. Lots of government. Government dependency.
Reply
This is exactly what the Democrats want. They are viewing this entire debacle as a golden opportunity to increase the size of government and expand dependency. Now is the time for you to rely on their party – and their savior, Barack Obama – to lead you out of this crisis and right onto the path of greater government dependency. And it all comes down to one thing, and that is power.-

power, yes...and the gross abuse of that power.

and none of us are fools enough to think that obama can lead us to the promised land, but he's a far better choice than more of the same.
and yes, i'm very hopeful this will be the golden opportunity to topple the corrupt republican regime, not to increase the size of government (which has grown exponentially since bush's election) but to empower the poor and middle class to greater self-sufficiency. we will have to closely watch any government elected to insure they don't become equally corrupt.
and finally, the "great society" created by roosevelt pulled us out of the great depression by using huge infrastructure "work projects" to put people to work, money circulating again and the increased incomes produced additional taxes to pay the government's bills. -

On what basis is Obama best suited to straighten out the country's economic problems?
Reply
Could be because Obama has never been accused of being complicit in a scandal that cost taxpayers billions, as McCain was with Lincoln Savings & Loan and Charles Keating. (Final determination of the official investigation was that McCain exercised "poor judgment.")
Or could be because Obama's economic mentor isn't the person most responsible for greatly accelerating the financial debacle, as McCain's is. Phil Gramm's deregulation removed controls put in place after the Great Depression specifically to prevent another one from happening. -

The argument for decreasing government size is not supported by the record.

Government shrunk only under Clinton in this century. Bush's expansion of government makes everyone before him look like rank amateurs and McCain was there cheerleading 90% of the time (frankly reversing his position the other 10% anyway).

Wait Wait. If you read the fine print of how the poll was taken Dems were polled more that repuublicans to a percentage or 38% dems 28% republicans. Also the poll says that it polled a larger than % of AfroAmericans for the poll. Based on these two factors Obama should have had a lot more than 9 points. If you think you can trust any poll and are going to make you decision via polls then we really are in 1884 by George Orwell.

You don't seem to understand how polling works. This was a random sample, so the pollsters had no control over whether they got a Rep. or a Dem. or an Ind. Looking at the history of the poll, it seems there is a trend that more people identify themselves as Democrat or Independent than Republican.
Reply
This same 'fine print' to which you refer clearly states that while African Americans were 'oversampled' in order to get numbers specific to African Americans, this oversampling was corrected for in the poll results.

The current economic crisis is exactly why McCain doesn't want to debate Friday. He is clueless about our economy, but has common sense enough to realize it and doesn't want to flub.. He flubbed when he ran for the nomination, he got it, and now he doesn't know what to do with it.

It truly baffles me that anyone would consider voting for Johnny McCain at this point in American History.
Reply
Every American now realizes that unrestrained, unregulated, and unsavory business practices led to this economic debacle.
Here are some questions and answers that I believe we can all agree ... because they have been repeated over and over and over again over the past decade.
--------------------------------------------------...
Who has positioned himself as the "King of Deregulators"?
John McCain.
--------------------------------------------------...
What party has run on a campaign promise to make government smaller .... but has consistently made it bigger? (The Federal Government is 40% larger today than it was in 2000)
Republicans.
--------------------------------------------------...
From what political party do candidates CONSISTENTLY say "Government IS the problem!" (Therefore, they don't believe in Government oversight ... and the failure of government oversight is exactly why Americans have been hurt by so much failure during this Bush administration.)
Republicans.
(Therefore, why elect officials who don't believe in making government work?)
--------------------------------------------------...
What political party last left us with a surplus?
Democrats.
--------------------------------------------------...
Which of the last 2 presidents thrust our nation into unprecedented national debt with wild crazy, unsupported spending?
Ronald Reagan (R), and George W. Bush (R)
--------------------------------------------------...
Now, the above statements are true. They are not spin. They are factual statements.
Abandoning political allegiances, and using simply logic, it makes no sense to vote Republican this election cycle. There is a very real, very obvious connection between their political vision and ideology and the complete breakdown of our economy.
I would LOVE to gain more insight into why supporters of McCain actually support him.
I have voted Republican in my long life. In fact, until 1976, I voted far more for Republicans than Democrats. But Republicans have changed.
They have proven to be incompetent ideologues with absolutely no logical grasp of reality.
To me, voting for a Republican this election cycle defies all logic.

The Democrats refused to act. Obama was one of those leading the way against the bill.
They created the mess with the Community Reinvestment Act in 1977 under Carter and expanded greatly under Clinton in 1992. The update took effect in 1995. Then the Sub prime loans went up to the $1 trillion today.
Problem brought to us be Democrats.
The refusal to fix it brought to us by the Democrats.
Thank you liberals for a $1 trillion problem.
Open your eyes nikkibabe. Things are not as black and white as you want to believe. Conservatives do have good ideas. This good idea was shot down by Democrats. Now we have a mess as prophesied by McCain.

There will be no bonuses for ceo's, salespeople, and managers that were involved. Nada. Look that word up under " Push "1" for English.
Any government official who knows, in any way, shape, or form, anyone involved in the troubled companies, will immediately recluse themselves from any bailout package maneuvering. Those involved government officials that insist they stay, will be immediately terminated from office. I say - Let them fail. Let them file for bankrupcy and work out agreements with their creditors. Work out deals with homeowners to pay what they can. Better something than an empty house that is unsaleable. Things can be worked out.

Listen to all the liberals try and blame the Republicans for this mess. The problem is when the fingerprints are looked at it is a Democrat problem.

In 1977 Carter signed the Community Reinvestment Act. That bill was to give minority better access to the loans that others were getting for mortgages. Bankers were ordered to relax the standards that they used to qualify people for loans. The sub prime loans were born.
In 1992 Clinton in his first year signed a bill to greatly expand this act. It made it apply to everybody. The act went into effect in Jan 1995. At that point all banks were graded on their compliance with this act. It became their CRA rating. If they didn't have a good enough rating then expansion was prohibited. So if they wanted to open new branches they had to comply. At that point the Sub prime loans went from about 48 billion to a trillion.
http://tsfiles.wordpress.com/2008/09/22/what-got-u...
When Bush took office there was requests to congress to reform the way that Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac were regulated and overseen. Bush made requests repeatedly including 17 this year. In 2003, 2005, and 2006 Republicans in Congress tried to correct the problems. But the Democrats blocked any reform.
In 2005 Barney frank said that there was nothing wrong with Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac. That the Republicans were wrong.
What did McCain say?
"I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation."
Congress did not act. McCain was a prophet.
Who led the opposition. If you look at the top recipients of the money from Fannie you will see Dodd as the top and Obama as second. The Democrats seem to be paid off and they did what was asked of them. No oversight or better regulations.
The Democrats started this mess and when the Republicans wanted to put on the brakes the Democrats refused to allow anything to happen. Thank you Democrats.-

Remember "Weapons of Mass Destruction"? Sell your babies and children down the river! Uncle Sam is about to spend another Trillion dollars of our kids future earnings because we do not want to be uncomfortable! Politics is broken in this country. MY god, how on earth can they be debating borrowing another 700 BILLION to bail out banks? We all know that number will be over 1 Trillion. All this hysteria because someone said the sky is falling! My god, if it is and if it does, lets spend on the money on the taxpayers. This will be the LARGEST swindle on the American taxpayer in history. Already William Buffet is buying billions of dollars of bank stocks because the public is about to spend 700 billion to bail the banks out and he knows the bank stocks will take off for the sky! Wake up people! Get your congressman to vote this thing down, stop the insanity and make companies responsible for their actions!

Anyone thinking that McCain is going to be a dominate speaker in the debates probably think that Bush is an excellent speaker! THe economy has been in the crapper for sometime and all of a sudden when McCain finally has to debate Obama he suddenly wants to look at the economy. Yeah that makes alot of sense! The Republicans always wanted to see what a trickle down effect style economy would look like and got it when they controlled the White house, Senate, and House in 92. NOw look what our economy looks like? 8 months in a row of unemployeement rate increase! What is McCain going to look at? AM I BLIND OR Something BUt isnt McCain's economic plan very similar to Bush's current economy plan? Can anyone afford another 4 more years of this policy? McCain keeps saying how Obama is going to tax business, why doesnt anyone look what Obama says he is going to tax! He says he is going to tax business that send jobs over seas, thus punishing companies that dont take the pride in Made in America.
