I think we need more comprehensive analysis of this tragedy. If only the Nebraska Legislature had really thought this through. It seems obvious to me that the people leaving all these kids at Nebraska Hospitals are desperate & probably hopeless. The Health & Human Services are dreadfully inadequate or unhelpful. But, we have a surplus! The law NEVER should have been passed as was.
Reply
If people really want to get to solutions, they will need to accept readily available family planning services of ALL kinds,to males AND females of all ages, upon request. This includes birth control, abortion, adoption subsidies (if needed). People do not really have control over their reproduction with the impediments the so-called pro-lifers have gotten into the laws. Talk about intrusive government! All of the limitations to reproductive health access should be stripped from the books so this becomes a private, family matter again for all people, not just Sarah Palin's daughter.
Public money SHOULD pay for sterilization ON REQUEST of the person, birth control, and subsidized adoption as needed. AND, public money should be used to shape up the Nebraska HHS so it is held accountable to provide modern, up to date services to all those real humans they are responsible for serving.
I can't imagine what their lives are like to drop off 9 kids as the solution. Unicameral - get back to the drawing boards.-

So you think it would of been better had the Mother aborted these children when she found out she was pregnant each time? Even though those nine kids are undoubtedly going through a difficult and emmotional time I have a feeling they are all glad their Mom made the choice to let them live rather than kill them before they were born. Aren't you glad your Mom made that choice?

That isn't what the poster said. Have you never heard of birth control? She's trying to point out that in some cases it is not readily available. -

No, the proper suggestion is they get preventive measures to not conceive in the first place. While this particular remark included abortion, if you leave this out as an option and look at it as a preventive form of contraception than no life is taken. At the very least, contraception and preventing pregnancy really needs to be talked about more so that people aren't just procreating because they are too stupid to be responsible.

The so-called 'pro-life' movement wants to restrict contraceptive measures as well. In Colorado, the Focus on the Family movement has introduced a measure that would constitutionally define a 'human' as existing, with full rights, from the point of fertilization. Using that definition, the Pill would be outlawed, as would an IUD and the 'morning after' pill.

copper and hormone iuds can and have killed the sperm before they reached the egg or made the egg nonviable or none existant terefore they are not as bad as those prolifers would like you believe im prolife to a point. if it will kill you or harm the baby to be born then abortion can be the only solution!!

Perhaps you prefer suicide as a result of their self-esteem being trashed by being raised in an environment where they were not wanted? Who would give thanks for that?

safe haven laws are in place for a situation just like this...and others. i have no praise for the parents in this scenario but the children are being cared for. i am an emergency department nurse. in my city, we on't have this happen often but are grateful when children are brought to us instead of being left in the desert to die. -

I TOTALLY AGREE THIS LAW WAS MADE FOR NEWBORNS AND INFANTS NOT YOUR WHOLE DAMN FAMILY WHEN YOUR DONE WITH THEM. THIS LAW SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN PASSED WITHOUT THEM THINKING OF THE OUTCOMES. WHAT KIND OF PARENT DROPS OFF ALL OF THEIR KIDS. IF WE HAD A SYSTEM THAT WOULD HELP THEM IT WOULD SOLVE THIS INSANITY.

We have an administration that doesn't even want to provide healthcare for millions of uncovered children. Somehow we can afford hundreds of billions of dollars for companies that willfully adopted bad business practices, but somehow can't pony up the dough for innocent, underprivileged children.
Sickening.-

It isn't that simple. Unfortunately big companies often are part of other companies stock portfolio. AIG is owned by many other companies that are not in financial trouble. If AIG implodes than the stock portfolio of these other companies (literally hundreds, maybe even thousands) will lose value as well. It's kind of like making sure the foundation to your home is solid so everything else in it and around it can survive. It sounds selfish for the government to have intervened when clearly money is needed for seemingly far more important things and there are more important things, and this happens to be one of them. Our government really needs to stop giving money away to other countries and supporting other interests outside of the US until the US is solid and flourishing. But unfortunately people whose genuine interest in improving the economy and structure of the US don't run for public office.

I am glad at least the kids were left there safely. Haen't you ever heard of this woman who drown all her children?
Reply
And another who tossed them off of a bridge? Come on people, think of the possbility of how things could have gone.
People do desparate things, most of the time the results are devastating.
The way our economy are going down the toilet, people have no way of getting out of their trouble. You will only hear more of this.
But don't let the economy dictate how you put people in the Oval office, remember that.

Instead of having abortions and killing innocent babies, why don't we try acting responsibly in the first place and using birth control so we don't get pregnant? There are so many easy ways to keep from getting pregnant, it just doesn't make any sense to have nine children you don't want. Although, I imagine the people didn't have nine children they didn't want, but with the economy the way it is, maybe the man felt the children would be better off this way. Sometimes life gets out of control and you do things you wouldn't normally do. Maybe he lost his job and doesn't even know how he's going to support himself, let alone nine children.

For a man to drop off 9 kids... It is unimaginable to me. This guy must have been in a tight spot indeed. In Nebraska they have laws that make abortion, birth control and other family services difficult to obtain. But 9 kids... Since any idiot would have figured this out after, maybe the seventh or eighth child, he is probably one of these people who don't believe in abortion, birth control, or family planing and has always been opposed to public financing for these services. Now we, the taxpayers get to raise his children. An abortion costs $400.00. A rubber costs $1.00. Raising 9 children costs $900,000. I am and always have been a fiscal conservative. I'm proud to be a member of the Democratic party. Gobama 08!

Husbandhater, I have 3 absolutely wonderful kids. I couldn't imagine abandoning them or living without them. My youngest boy is in South Carolina. This is the farthest and longest I've been away from any of them. I realize that you are a man hater but for this guy or anyone else to give up all of his children is impossible for me to comprehend. MEN DO LOVE THEIR CHILDREN!!! I hope you understand me now and good luck battling your bulimia.

Your name seems to be a contradiction in terms. Lemme get this straight; you want the government to give out money to people just because they want it? You want the government to pay for birth control, adoption and abortion!! By the way; the government does give money to those who adopt children who are emotionally or mentally deficient. But I would say to you that the best form of birth control is to use a condom or just abstain when you're going through your fertile period. Since when are women to be surrogate mothers? We already have enough of that with these little trollops having babies and expecting for the tax payers to foot the bill for their indescretions. I'm sick of it!! -

Can you just imagine how many more times this will happen if Palin is elected as VP and, gasp, were to become president? WE desperately need to educate people to accept the idea of birth control.

This is sad. Both parents need to be chased down and brought to justice; this is a misinterpretation of a decent law. Poor kids. All nine are going to be scarred for life.
AND CONGRESS wants to bail out Wall Street?-

Why are you assuming that Sarah Palin didn't tell her daughter about birth control? I have a now 20 yr old daughter with a 2 yr old baby. She knew everything about everything but she still ended up with my first grandbaby. Life happens. We deal with it and we move on.

Where have you been? Palin promotes "abstinence only" sex education, meaning there is a good chance her daughter was blissfully unaware of her contraceptive options. The point made is that how many other girls, under Palin's sex education reforms, are going to end up with a bunch of kids that they don't want? How many more times are we going to read stories like these?

that's not a bright thing for the anti-abortion types to say, is it?
maybe she ain't all that smart or self-aware...
of course if she IS actually smart she could always say-I meant keeping the child and not putting it up for adoption, yeah, that's the ticket, I meant the right choice for HER, not the right choice in general...yeah, that's what I meant, that's the ticket

Then be clear about how you cite assumptions. Do not state I made an assumption that I did not make. I am discussing what Palin intends in terms of national education. She does not believe in sex education; does not support science. I did not say anything specifically pointed about her daughter.
You brought up the subject of her daughter and birth control, making the discussion limited, personal and without class or grace.
Perhaps this was a forum for you to be self-congratulatory about your grandchild. -

I doubt Palin did talk to her daughter about birth control. She is extremely conservative and doesn't believe in sex before marriage. She also thinks we can pray the gay away. Instead of preaching abstinence, which obviously isn't working, people should educate their kids about sex. One in four girls has an STD. Girls and boys alike need to be educated.

The need to have sex is a very powerful force in everybody's life. ( Or at least most everybody's ) Most people will have sex regardless of weather they might get an STD, baby, AIDS, divorce, or blackmail. Some (most?) people just can't help it. To say "keep your pants on" or "keep your knees together" just won't do it . It never has and never will. No matter what your religeous beliefs.

Wow, how ignorant are you?? Just tell them about birth control and they wont' have kids.........what fairy land do you live in???? Same one that says "Just talk to terrorists and they won't attack us." Idiot. Grow up. This is the real world and you are never going to turn it into the "hold hands and sing" world you want. It's against human nature. God himself was no doubt sure that the flood of Noah's time would teach humans a lesson forever. Didn't work. And people like you believe you can accomplish what God could not.

Actually, the countries with the LOWEST rates of unwanted teen pregnancies (and abortions) have the most comprehensive sex education which includes emotional aspects. Interviews with these kids show they talk more about 'respect' and 'responsibility' and 'feelings' and a 'caring relationship' than do interviews with American kids

That woman, Sarah Palin, Scares me. She's a young woman so she will be around for a long time. The Republik party has found a rock star so we will no doubt be seeing her in elections for a long time to come. She is just the kind of person that creates stories like this. No body abandons their children for no reason.

Maybe the mother has passed away and the father couldn't raise the kids all on his own. Maybe the father felt he had no other choice and that someone else could give them a better home and a better chance at an education and future.
Reply
It's always so easy to pass judgement on others' situations without being fully informed. I am grateful that the father did what he did rather than abandoning them in another (worse) manner, or taking their lives as we have all read about other parents doing. It is obvious that the father loves them or he wouldn't have made sure they were safe. Yes, there are loopholes in the law, but thank goodness these and the other kids weren't left on the side of the road somewhere.-

I understand what some of you are saying but I recall reading about some parents taking their children and jumping off of overpasses, this is something I do not care to read about again! I would rather read that a family is safe and being taken care than to see something horrific happening to them. This family of nine may be in care of the Social Services right now but they are being taken care of is the point. I am a Grandmother of six beautiful Grandchildren, a newborn addition to our family just six weeks ago has blessed our lives. I cannot imagine this baby being anywhere else but with us, I cannot imagine any of my Grandchildren being anywhere but near me, so I am so very sorry that this family has been separated from their Dad. I will keep them and other children in my prayers.

I totally agree. The mother died from a brain aneurism 17 months ago (shortly after giving birth to the 1-year-old). This article has information about it: http://www.ketv.com/cnn-news/17553170/detail.html
