Spokeswoman Marni Tomljanovic said Newman died yesterday.

Newman finished chemotherapy treatment for cancer in August and it was widely reported in the US that he had only weeks to live. In June this year, a neighbour and business partner said the actor told him about the disease the previous year.

In May, Newman pulled out of directing John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men for unspecified health reasons.

"Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid" was the first movie I ever saw, and remains my favorite. I have the special DVD version with an exceptional documentary section of behind the scenes footage with Newman and Redford. Paul is an icon who gave me so much through his films. He leaves one hell of a legacy. :)

Here was a good man who actually used his fame and money to make the world a little better. My condolences to his family.

A good article about his Newman's Own brand, which I think a lot of people forget about when thinking about him.

Anyone else think Paul Newman looks a bit like Rutger Hauer?

A very good actor and not an oversized ego to go with it. RIP Paul.

RIP. My favorite movie of his was Cool Hand Luke. Taught me a lot about standing up for the truth, and for yourself.

He gave back, loved, loved his family. I heard an interview on NPR with his daughter (I think she took over the company). The respect she had for her dad and the love for him ran deep. My heart goes out to his family. RIP Paul.

I always loved Paul Newman..I met him when I was very little with my dad at the races and he let us ride around with him on his cart. My dad, a former midget sprint driver, had a bum leg and hip. After walking around for hours, we stopped to rest by taking a seat on the back of a parked golf cart. I was only about seven years old, but I knew Paul Newman when he walked up and started talking to my dad and me. Instead of making us get off of his cart, he invited us to take a ride with him around the infield. We spent much of the day with him and I remember him just being so nice. My dad was so happy to have that opportunity too...it was a story he told far into his old age. Most impressive was how "normal" Paul Newman was that day. Not like a star at all.

My prayers are with his wife tonight...how hard it must be for her. He'll be missed worldwide, but her world will never be the same. The pain of his cancer is over so we should be happy for that. Seriously, the one I mourn for is Joanne.

I think my favorite film of his was the relatively recent "Nobody's Fool", he reminded me a lot of my Uncle Len's dad in that movie. Just an excellent performance, proving why Newman was so highly thought of.
If you haven't seen it, I recommend it highly.
Thank, Paul. Thanks for Nobody's Fool and for The Color of Money, The Verdict, Absence Of Malice, Slap Shot, The Sting, The MacKintosh Man, The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cool Hand Luke, Hombre, Torn Curtain, Harper, Hud, The Hustler, Exodus, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, The Left-Handed Gun, The Long Hot Summer, Somebody Up There Likes Me, oh, and thanks one more time for lending your voice to Cars, you really made that film for me.
Miss you? You bet I will old man.
