Comments for Messages to Congress as High as 300 to 1 Against Bailout »
Posted By Stringcheese 1 year, 1 month ago in NewsFirst the Republicans were for it (the Big Bailout), and then they were against it. What happened?
What happened is YOU, and others like you, pounding on Congress to NOT pass the Big Bailout.
There were constant reports on CNBC yesterday, and in other places, that calls and messages to Congress were running roughly 300 to 1 against the Big Bailout. This is what made the Republicans reverse course.

For those of you who believe that 700 billion will do the job: Rule of thumb for government estimates. Double the estimate for the first six months, triple for the next six month period, 33.5 percent for each following six month periods attributed to unforeseen inflation adjustments and cost overruns .But we are already at 1.8 trillion. Know when to hold'em know when to fold'em know when to walk away!NO BAILOUT!

That is one person's opinion. Anyone can put together a film of half truths to sway opinion. That's how propaganda works.
All the Republicans do is point fingers at the Democrats when they had complete control of this country for 6 years. Why didn't they do something about it then instead of pointing fingers at things that happened 30 years ago? Because they can't take responsibility. That why. Everything was going fine until energy prices hit the roof and the dollar deflated in value because of Republican's spending on the Iraq war and Haliburton.-

The CRA was responsible for rebuilding many communities and not just the black neighborhoods as you would like to point out. Republicans make it out as an act to force loans to blacks but that was not the only purpose of it. nuff said.

We elected these people -- the Dems have been pulling the strings for the past two years, we had 911, war on terror, Katrina, the world tilted 2 degrees, global warming, God ripped out of the schools and a good standard of living for the past 220 plus years. Now all of a sudden - it is pay day and no one wants to write a check! I am going to pray more for our leaders, work harder to give to the poor and needy more, cut my life style back to what is necessary to make my life fit in what we are being dealt and move forward very carefully.

Funny you didn't mentioned the Republicans pulling all the strings for the previous 6 years that these things happened. Why didn't the Republican congress pass laws to put God back in schools? Because they play the religious right for fools.
I just wish you guys would make up your mind. Do you want the bill passed or not? Personally I myself don't give a hoot.

i'm sorry. did you type something? did you say TRUST those we put in government? ahem... WE didn't put anyone in government. not even republican voters. THEY put themselves in office through fraudulent means and now that we've reached a pivotal point in this whole clusterf**k of a situation, you are naive enough to trust THEM to handle it? just read their plan. there are really no checks and balances in it at all... they leave it wide open for wall street to take advantage of the situation. the "golden parachute" clause says nothing about their salary. they're still taking a million bucks a month in pay. are YOU? Sounds like the Republicans are a bunch of babies...what, they can't listen to a speech by Pelosi and still vote the correct way for the good of the country? Crybabies, all of them...
___________
"The package, which was backed by both the Democratic and Republican congressional leadership as well as President Bush, failed in the House by a vote of 228-205.
A majority of Democrats voted for the bill. A majority of Republicans voted against it.
The Republican House leadership blamed Pelosi for giving a partisan speech before the voting that they said alienated House Republicans."
"Ask yourselves why you came here and vote with courage and integrity to those principles. If, like me, you came here because you believe in limited government and the freedom of the American marketplace, I urge you vote in accordance with your convictions," Rep. Mike Pence, R-Indiana, said.
"Stand up for limited government and economic freedom. Stand up for the American taxpayer. Reject this bailout and vote no on the emergency economic stabilization act," he said.
___________
I other words, vote no and doom the country we live with possibly years of our children paying the bill that could have maybe have been softened by a positive vote today...-

the dems were doing that all weekend. On George Stephanopoulos -- McCain is talking about getting the deal done and other issues, the dem comes on and is trashing McCain. On Chris Wallace, that Lindsay guy is talking about the deal and what it needs and John Kerry's trashing the republicans in general and McCain in general --even going back to HIS debate with Bush to continue the trashing. Meet the press, about the same thing.
Reply
Even the sound bites I heard today -- Obama says McCain is just posturing -- so what? You think no one can see it?
This is a huge problem that the Democratic leadership has -- and has had. Nearly the entire substance of Kerry's campaign was "vote for me 'cuz I'm not Bush"...no, duh! Even there is much of vote for Obama because McCain IS Bush.
And now, with this incident, with one side of their mouths they talk about reaching across the aisle, but they just can't resist the opportunity to get a lick in against a Republican.
No wonder this country is in such a mess.

I don'tunderstand how an accounting change solves the liquidity problem. If your house is valued at 200,000 and you can't make a cash payment on the mortgage, but under different accounting rules your house is valued at 180,000-- you still can't make a cash payment on your mortgage.

Apparently, no one thinks that taxpayer dollars should be used to prop up people and institutions who made bad choices.
Reply
I don't think it's a good idea to proceed with the "bailout," for three reasons: as a matter of fact, government has never been able to outsmart the market and now is not a good time to try; as a matter of principal, placing the control of all capital in the hands of the government is antithetical to the notion of a market economy, let alone a free market - every country that has tried to regulate the market and economy has failed; and what a message to send the world - the government will use the tax dollars collected from those who made the right choices to bail out those whom made bad choices.

Now here's another stupid statement. If you think that loans to blacks are the reason the banks collapsed you're beyond help. They were loaning out money they never had in the bank. That's the reason this problem is happening. You know. Phil Gramm and McCain's push for deregulation.

The Republicans are the ones that enabled this mess. McCain was one who pushed deregulation several years ago and the GOP were the ones that voted for it.

It was deregulation that fed the frenzy and led CEOs to ignore their moral values and give into greed.
CEOs should be punished as should the failed banks.
I heard on NPR an official from Switzerland tell about a total monetary failure there some years ago. He said we should stop ours now but put a lot of teeth in it. If I remember correctly, they seized (or something) 70% of the stock of the companies so that the middle class wouldn't suffer.-

You're a political liar. Bush had the Republican controlled congress to do everything he wanted but his only priority was the Iraq war and Saddam's execution. True Democrats have never been for deregulation but rather that's what McCain has been trying to push through congress his whole time there including Reagan years. Reagan got deregulation passed because of the southern Democrat base that have conservative views and that's why they're nearly all Republicans now-

The deregulation you're talking about dealt with undoing all the red tape the dems put in place only to boggle-down the efforts to rebuild and replace the actual and financial infra structure of America to assure it's stability. The Republicans stopped the mad, panicked rush to sign a bad bailout bill. The Dems and Bush were all set to sign it.
Reply
So this is a great day for the Republicans then. WhY? Because they listened to the American people.
And that means it was a good day for MCain too. Why? The leader of the Republican Minority in the House of Reps. credited John McCain with making personal calls to congress to work out a better bill.
He also said, "if not for John McCain being at the meeting, they (The Dems and Bush) would have steam-rolled right over the minority Reps. (who did listen to us,,, the people).
Once again John McCain does what is right not what gets him "smoke and mirror points" like Obama.
Obama walked away when he should have got in there to help. He did not want to take a stand, just get a video / sound bite, again (just be present for the 130th time).
Obama went back out campaigning while McCain stayed at his office in VA for the weekend and helped pass a better bill.
Who do you want as president now? Someone who talks good but does nothing or someone who does the right thing and helps builds a consensus with both parties to a more positive outcome?
This is why McCain is the one to help us the most now. It's not about who looks good, it's about who does good.-

We can't believe anything that Dumbya says! He said the stimulus was going to fix our economy, did it? NO! Now he says this 700 billion $ bailout is going to stabilize our economy.. will it? I doubt it.. Bush is busy slapping bandaids on the cancer he has spread in this country, in hopes that it buys him time until November. Will it buy him time? Probably, but God help the person who has to step in and attempt to fix this mess.

People who voted for Dumbya should be very proud of themselves. He proved himself to be wasteful and a destroyer of everything he touched long before he was handed the presidency. He, his family and his cronies are the only people who have benefitted from his presidency. Congratulations to all the people who voted for him, you got what you deserved. If you vote for John McCain, you will get more of the same, but some people never learn that you can't put a square peg in a round hole, but a fool never learns from their own mistakes, Bush is living proof of this. -

WASHINGTON - The House of Representatives on Monday defeated a $700 billion emergency rescue package, ignoring urgent pleas from President George W. Bush and bipartisan congressional leaders to quickly bail out the staggering U.S. financial industry.
Stocks plummeted on Wall Street even before the 228-205 vote to reject the bill was announced on the House floor.
And it also appears that Dumbya (R), is the one pushing this so hard, and i haven't read much that claims the Libbies are ALL for it.
However, McCain and Obama both voted for it, although neither were convinced.

The adjournment resolution adopted by the House left open the possibility that leaders could call the chamber back into session at any time prior to the Jan. 3 start of the 111th Congress, whose members will be elected Nov. 4.
LOL they need to get back to their districts to campaign!
Never mind that they haven't done the spending bills in the House
They aren't planning to go back into session until Jan 3.
That is utter nonsense
How many days do you think this Congress has worked this year?
Are you listening to this on C-Span?
In moving for a procedural vote, Rep. Louie Gohmert of Tyler said this morning: "I move to adjourn so we don't do this terrible thing to America."
His procedural vote was not approved

He is the number 1 recipient of funds from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Countrywide Mortgage gave him big bucks, too. He is chairman of the banking committee, but is so astute that he didn't even realize that he was getting special treatment from Countrywide when he got his last mortgage.
CT is truly blessed to have such fine senators as Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman (a bit of sarcasm there)

Let these institutions take their lumps. Should they fail, there will be new companies formed to fill the void --hell, some of these guys who got golden parachutes might invest some of their big bucks in a new bank.

You never know....
But, because there will always be a market for loans and mortgages, there will be people who will see the profit opportunity and step up to take it.

Well it seems to have failed to pass, good. My impression was that the main reason those republicans that voted against it didn't like the oversight and CEO caps provisions, not the purpose of the bill itself. If section 8 had been approved and no restrictions against CEO golden parachutes included it might have squeaked through.

That would be accurate except for the fact that the so called oversight & CEO caps written in were garbage & fluff. Go and actually read what just failed; those CEO caps were just for new hires, they guys who actually drove this bus into the river still got to keep theirs. And who was it trying to push it through and even claimed a premature victory? Pelosi and her ilk - but wait aren't they demopukes?

A. Clinton administration in 1999 proposes lifting restrictions for home loan applicants so people with less than stellar credit and people with low incomes can afford homes
B. 2001- Fannie mae has almost 50% loans now from low income homeowners
C. George Bush in 2003 tries to get them to tighten restrictions, Fannie and Freddie put risk with low income loans, debt growing
D. Greespanadvises that Fannie and Freddie are accruing too much debt because of low restrictions from 1999 and low income homeowners, we could be at risk for a possible bail out if economy turns. too much debt for Fan and Fred
E. Here we are today
As i see it
A. Clinton caused this to happen, not everyone is able to own homes and if you are giving a 30 year mortgage, unless you are going to guarantee the economy will be great for 3o years, never before done in history, then eventually these homeowners will default on loans and be foreclosed on. NOT EVERYONE CAN OWN HOMES.
B. Bush is at fault for not pushing harder in 2003 to get them to change regulations so that they stopped issuing mortgages with low down paymetns to low income people.
But with a democratic congress and house, guess what, they wouldn't listen...Bloated codfish, BArney Frank, just told us it was republicans that caused this, but when he was questioned in 2004 about greenspan comment on warnings of loans from fannie and freddy, it wasn't going to happen and he was just alarming the public..
Guess what, Barney boy was wrong....
And we my friends are the jerks who somehow believed that Bill Clinton was correct in lowering income requirements and lowering down payments and today, we are still believing in democrats and why...cause we are just too stupid
You are opting not to go to the NY times archives and read about what really happened because you like to live in the democratic world of fantasy.....grow up before our democratic congress and house , who by the way do most fo the law making kills us -

You do realize the head of your party, the guy whose praises you've been singing for the last eight years, is the one who was crying Armageddon and is crying right now don't you aniokly?? Also the reason some of the republicans voted against it was because it contained oversight provisions.

"Of course you see it as a Clinton error." Nope. I do however remember Bush making speeches about how his administration was going to help every American realize the American dream of 'home ownership'. He left out the part about the ownership only lasting about a year.

Sadly I think the ones who voted against the bill are going back to their districts to get re-elected in November then going back to Washington and the first thing they will do is bring the bill back up for a vote and this time vote for it. This includes both democrats and republicans. You gotta love politics.

Maybe congress should have been investigating the financial book cookers a year ago instead of worrying about baseball and Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens...How much time, energy, and money did the American tax payers have wasted on that... Had congress been investigating finances and been aware there was a problem, maybe this whole financial crisis thing could have been headed off. Congress should have followed the advice of a great American with these words of wisdom (Barney Fyfe) " Nip it in the bud,Andy you got to nip it in the Bud!"

Here's a novel idea. 700 billion bailout. Population of US is approx 306,000,000. Why not give every adult 18 and over a million dollars and let us bail our own selves out. Too easy, to simple, gives too much to the ordinary person that's why. If congress did this seems to me they'd be saving money and we could fix things ourselves!

Health insurance? Mike, why are you bringing this up? What's this got to do with the Wall Street collapse?
Reply
It has everything to do with it. This so-called "collapse" was triggered by the massive defaulting and foreclosures going on with people's home mortgages. Do you know why so many Americans are losing their homes? To hear the Republicans describe it, it's because too many working class idiots were given mortgages that they really couldn't afford. Here's the truth: The number one cause of people declaring bankruptcy is because of medical bills. Let me state this simply: If we had had universal health coverage, this mortgage "crisis" may never have happened.-

Go to canada my friend, buy a 10 piece chicken nugget from mc donalds and you will pay 9.95 and milk, well when i went last year it was up to 7.50 a gallon, we went on the most expensive vacation in canada because we were TAXED TO DEATH ON EVERYTHING,. sorry, my husband works hard, i work hard and i don't need universal healthcare and yes, my friend, i have a child with a fatal illness and he doesn't need so wacky insurance system where he gets ok care because no one is making money. Now if we get rid of all the illegal immigrants sitting in our hospitals getting free care just because they are just that illegal immigrants then maybe more americans can get beds in hospitals.....sorry universal healthcare is yet just another fantasy of the democrats, why because the big guys have enough money to pay for who ever they want to care for them and really don't care if you get shoddy care...

Another nincompoop repug. You watch too much TV and listen to way too much repug propaganda. My brother just had both hips done, no long wait and no problem, you have no idea of what you are talking about. Oh ya , as Bush told you, don't buy drugs from Canada because he hasn't tested them . So what did many of you silly repugs do, stopped buying the same drugs from Canada at much cheaper prices than you pay right at home. Canada buys the drugs from you in the first place, so who is stupid here, your repug leader knows who and they profit from it. But no, you won't believe it cause you are too narrow and brainwashed to learn anything on your own.

i WOULD BE TOTALLY FOR IT IF THEY WOULD PUT IN WRITING THAT ALL OF THEIR CEO'S AND TOP EXECUTIVES WOULD BE TERMINATED, INVESTIGATED BY THE FBI (IF FOUND TO BE GUILTY OF FRAUD OR MISDOING, THEN THEY WOULD HAVE TO SELL ALL THEIR BOATS, HOUSES, OTHER ASSETS AND PAY EVERY PENNY BACK) AND LOSE ALL THEIR SEVERENCES AND PENSIONS. THEN WE COULD HELP SAVE THE OTHER PEOPLE WHO DEPEND ON THEIR JOBS TO LIVE, NOW THAT WOULD BE WORTH HELPING OUT...THAT IS WHAT AMERICA SHOULD BE ABOUT...

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs. —Thomas Jefferson, 1802

For all those of you against the bail out plan, good luck when your 401k plan goes down the tube. I forgot most of you dont have a 401k plan. And as for those in congress that voted down the plan, thanks alot. Most of you don't have a clue what the average person has lost with your vote. Your day will come when have to face the voters.

we are all unbelievable angry. but politicians should have done something a long time ago and now refuse to do something. we are to blame if we reelect any of them. could a whole new group do any worse? we have a large group of self-important morons running this country. ok, realistically, a 'bailout' is needed to help everyone not just Wall Street. in the long run we all will suffer more without the help.

I seriously doubt if our Congressional members were listening to us, their constituents; they never do so why start now, even during an election year? The ONLY folks the majority of Congress listens to are the lobbyists with the deep deep pockets; look at all the 'gifts' and donations they get from the lobbyists; so hate to burst the bubbles of the liberal and the conservative folks but congress cares about congress and that is about it.

I said it before heads should roll.No one with their hands in the cookie jar up to the elbow, should be tried for grand theft. Anybody taking out a loan for any reason under false pretenses should have to walk away empty handed.Being poor doesn't give one the right to be rewarded.Stop talking about a terrible economy, and look.I haven't seen any mass foreclosures hear in my area.My next door neigbors are selling there house, and buying a larger house.

I AM AMAZED THAT OUR CONGRESS HAS NOT ELICITED THE HELP OF SOME OF THE LEADING ECONOMISTS TO BEGIN TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE READ SEVERAL ARTICLES WRITTEN BY THEM AND WHAT THEY ARE PROPOSING IS MUCH BETTER THAN PRINTING MORE MONEY THAT PUTS US FURTHER IN DEBT WITHOUT TOTALLY UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM.

The bailout is distasteful, like a lot of medicine. I want to hear from every one of you 'anti' recovery people once the Depression breaks over us. Explain to your friends and neighbors, and explain to your kids and grandkids how ignorant, thoughtless, braindead, uninformed Palinist fools sealed the collapse of what was once the world's greatest economy. We'll be begging for food from Chavez and Hu JinTao. Just watch and see.

We do not need a bailout. The weakened finincial companies should leave the bad assets on their books (at cost). Everyone will know that the balance sheet is not as strong as it appears. They could depreciate these bad assets in about 20 years or so. The Federal
