Why McCain Won the Debate »
Posted By Wolfie2007 1 year, 2 months ago in NewsThere is little question that John McCain ?won? the first debate last night. Perhaps he lost on points (arguments) and style (how could he beat Mr. Smooth?), but McCain ?won? over the audience, the only victory that counts.

Wolfie2007: "There are Thirteen Reasons Why McCain Won the Debate."
Reply
All right, let's look at them.
"1. Any question that McCain is too old to run for office has been put to rest. He was sharp, on point and looked good -- good enough, that is."
Fair enough. McCain did not look inordinately old, but neither did Obama, so this is a draw at most.
"2. If the debate was held before the elite faculties of Harvard and Columbia, schools Obama attended, he would have won hands down. But this debate was held before the American public."
In other words, on substance, Obama was better, but since the American public doesn't pay attention to substance, they probably favor McCain. (As the Gallup poll shows they don't, but that's a different issue.)
"3. Obama was too smooth, too smart. Remember the “W. Factor.” Bush lost all the debates with John Kerry on style and substance. But Bush came across as more likeable. Ditto McCain."
I wonder what makes someone "too smooth" and "too smart," especially too smart. If I were voting in that election, I would go for the smartest person I could get. I don't think I would consider anyone too smart, not even if that person was so smart that I would feel that my intelligence is that of a worm compared to his/hers. Apparently the American people go for "likeable." In my view, kittens are likable and so are poodles, but I wouldn't want them to be my president.
"4. Obama has a subtle, condescending speaking style. His hand gestures of constant pointing fingers, frequently raising his fingers to eye level, jabbing constantly, make’s one feel he’s lecturing us. Yes, John Kennedy jabbed, but only occasionally."
Yes, let's focus on style of speaking. Never mind what he has to say, the important thing is whether he jabs with his fingers, and how often. Nothing is more important than superficial mannerisms. -

Has anyone noticed how far Obama is from the original platform he had when combating Hillary? His changes of stance on the war, energy, and economics. If you think he's going to bring the military home, I hope you listened to the debate very closely.

If you really care about the USA it is time to put a NONE OF THE ABOVE slot on your ballot. Mc Cain is between a rock and a hard place ( squeeze play ) Obama does not have a clue. God help us if the BAILOUT goes through.

Choosing a winner in the debate depends entirely on where you stand on the war and regulatory issues. If you think the Iraq war was necessary then right now it would seem we are doing very well and that McCain won the debate. On the other hand if you take issue with its necessity and the fact that we went in under false pretenses at best, the war is the straw that might break: our economy, our standing in the world, and our attempt to crush Bin Laden's movement. On the economy, if you benefited from the unbridled greed of the deregulatory spirit of the the recent past you will likely not tie McCain to any of it even though he was one of the stars of the Keating disaster of the savings and loan debacle.
It just comes down to your level of denial. If Palin tanks the debate you will also probably think she won and that the sky is really purple too. -

Thanks for the post Volfie. This is reminiscent of luvmyprez's George Bush Birthday Bash It was a riot and tables got turned over. Just like your post. I noticed in the story tags that they misspelled "wiener". Just trying to help out.

The main thing the commentators kept repeating after the debates is that Obama said "you're right" many times. The whole process of debating (such as on a debate/forensics team) is to listen to the other point of view, conceed something if possible, and then refute everything else. Was Obama on a debate team in college, or was it one of his advisors? Why don't any of the talking heads understand formal debate process?

I was also VERY uncomfortable with McCain's obsessive comments about veterans. I respect, admire and appreciate all our vets (I cry and pray for them each day), but to say that he will cut spending in EVERY sector of the government except vet affairs is scary. Why are they more imprtant than anything else, to the exclusion of anything else? The comment about knowing how it feels to loose a war was another example. Guess how the vets feel just to BE IN a war, let alone lose?
SCARY! -

10. McCain demonstrated he doesn?t simply talk a good talk, but has walked the walk. He has been a long time enemy of earmarks. And he has been a fighter who has crossed the partisan divide time and again. Obama simply has no such record. -

I trust John McCain because know about John McCain and all his wrinkles.
Reply
I don't trust Barry Obama because he keeps too much hidden, like his grades from Columbia and Harvard Law School or examples of his literary talent other than his two autobios. Btw, why has he used so many different alias in his life? Why aren't some of his friends from college and his extended family talking about him and endorsing him? Didn't his mother have any ralatives in the United States? -

icono1: "McCain has 'experience' with the real world."
Reply
What kind of real world experience does John McCain have other than his POW years? Born as the son of an Admiral, predestined for a military career, marrying a rich woman and never having any financial worries in his life...
Is that the real world experience you are living? -

1. Any question that McCain is too old to run for office has been put to rest. He was sharp, on point and looked good, good enough, that is.
Wrong. His age will remain a factor no matter what he says and does for one giant reason: Sarah Palin.
Face it, she scares people. On both sides of the fence. She's simply not ready for prime time and everybody knows it except those 30%ers who can’t and will never unclench for any reason.
Which makes us worry about McCain’s age. He's 72. He's currently on six different medications for five different ailments. There's a 32% he'll die before the end of his first term should he win. That's not ageist. That's reality.
And when we look at whose waiting in the wings we don't feel safe. Which means she's the wrong choice. So we should be worried.
Had McCain picked someone more experienced, polished and perceived by a good deal of the public as smart or at least knowledgeable (like Condi Rice or Tom Ridge) we wouldn’t be so worried about McCain’s age.
2. If the debate was held before the elite faculties of Harvard and Columbia, schools Obama attended, he would have won hands down. But this debate was held before the American public.
This makes no sense. Christopher Ruddy (also the editor of Newsmax, btw) is saying if the debate was held in front of a bunch of liberals, Obama would have won by a landslide. No sh*t. And if the debate was held in a conservative church in Phoenix, McCain would have won. Which makes the point pointless.
And yes, this debate was held before the American public, and the majority has spoken, Obama won it.
From the CBS poll of undecided debate-watchers:
39% said Obama won
36% said it was a draw
25% said McCain won
46% said their opinions of Obama went up
31% said the same about McCain.
3. Obama was too smooth, too smart. Remember the "W. Factor." Bush lost all the debates with John Kerry on style and substance. But Bush came across as more likeable. Ditto McCain.
First, Ruddy has a problem with Obama being "too smart" and that's dumb.
Then, he says McCain was more likeable during the debate, which simply isn’t true.
Time reports that the perception of John McCain as a negative campaigner was strengthened immensely. Before the debate, McCain was seen as more negative by a seven-point margin, and then by a 26-point margin afterward. Meanwhile, Barack Obama's numbers on readiness to be president increased.
And from the CNN post debate poll:
Which candidate was more likeable: Obama 61%, McCain 26%
So, when Ruddy claims McCain was more likeable, he’s simply in fantasy land.
There’s no need to go on… -

thats right ,main thing is election day. I have one question for all... What is obama's opinion of middle class voters as he is constantly talking about? Have you ever heard him say working class or what middle class makes over 200,000 yr to him and he only talks of them and not normal everyday working people. Plus he needs to learn waitresses do Not make min. wage what so ever they make less than 3 an hr plus tips.

Come on rose, we know they matter, well thats when your boy is leading of course, but its been a while and unless Biden by some miracle screws up his debate with Palin you will not likely see the lead again.Oops I forgot that I heard that Palin was not aloud to answer any questions at the debate, so that could put McCain in the lead again.

I guess I missed the debate. Although I thought I saw it. But since Wolfie posted that McCain won that debate, I either didn't see the same one, or maybe Wolfie thought he saw one that the majority of America didn't see.
Reply
The one I saw, McCain smirked all the way thru. McCain was so out of it, he didn't realize he didn't have anything to smirk about.
Wolfie - I, and the majority of the people who saw this debate say Obama won it hands down. So did the Independents in Ohio. As I recall the percent was something like 61% to 38%. But what the hey, supporters of the Bush bunch ( includes McCain) never let a little thing like facts, truth , or law get in their way. The Bush Administration can be defined by three words: Corrupt, Immoral, Unethical. -

McCain would have a head start as President. He doesn't rely on a gift of gab, just facts. He has been everywhere, knows what needs to be done and how to do it. Far too many Americans do NOT know that Congress is controlled by the Democrats. Gee, no wonder what needs to be done, doesn't. I also wonder how many Americans LISTENED to what was being said and not on HOW it was being said. Sixty years ago had there been a crazy media we have now, FDR would not have been elected. He was in a wheel chair. Far too many Americans believe everything they see and hear from the so-called media, and NOT by doing their research. This is a free country, so far, and no one can dictate what we must do. We have the freedom to vote. People like to point fingers and put the blame on anyone who is trying to do their best..could never figure that one out. Who is Obama, what has he done for the welfare of this country? Nothing since he has not been around long enough...let him learn the way we all have to learn, the hard way and by DOING. By not criticizing, and paying his dues. I don't believe 175 or so days qualify Obama. Government must get out of many things, proof? The current crisis. McCain tried to de regulate 3 years ago. (remember, Democrats control the congress) As President he will be heard, listened to, and prove he was the best choice. God Bless America

Should I mention that until 2 - 3 years ago that the Republicans controlled Congress? Let's see a Republican President and a Republican Congress equals war, financial ruin and much larger government than Clinton ever had... Thank goodness for Republicans. Signed a very loyal Independent!

No! Three years ago the republicans controlled Congress. The democrats did not take control Congress until January 3. 2007 around noon. Why do you republicans keep saying that. Remember Speaker Dennis Hastert, he was the republican that represented Illinois's 14th congressional district. He was Speaker of the House from 1999 to 2007. The Speaker is elected by the majority party. Say " the republicans controlled Congress in 2005" I know you know republican Ted Steven the Senator from Alaska, he was President pro tempo of the Senate from 2003 to 2007. You see the Democrats did not, I repeat did not control Congress in 2005.

Obama seemed much more presidential while McCain sputtered and used the same tired finger pointing of the last two weeks. McCain can't seem to get his footing but is just hung up on a war we never should have gone to in the first place. I was pretty much unsure until the debate -- McCain is just not cut out to be Presidential material. No wonder he was in the last in his class at the Naval Academy.

John McCain did not "win" this debate. What he did show is that he can recycle the timeworn strategy of hiding behind the American flag, telling us he believes we are good people, everything will be ok. The worst insult was to the vets, telling them he will "take care of them". If he is so concerned about the vets, where was he, while their care and access to services were being denied and neglected by the VA..its a disgrace for him to climb on their backs now...Judgement? Look who he picked for his VP..?
