People who grew up playing video games are influenced by them, especially when designing games of their own. Those who played through the 1980s are reaching their professional prime, and the games they played in school are worth examining. Here we’ll take a look at what I consider to be the top ten most influential educational games from the 1980s.

This is a good story and all, but I just wish it had more to do with adult indian movie sex.

    But that's just me.

LOL. I just removed that spammer from the Geek group, and reported the account to our elite team of spam-killing assassins.

Man, they are fierce today. Guess the Geek Group is so popular they figure it's a good place for spam. So I guess that's cool in a way.

Seeing the screen shots for NumberMunchers and the classic Oregon Trail just made me screech "OMG! I remember that!" in my office. I'd forgotten about NumberMunchers. Gosh, I loved those old educational games I used to pay in the MacLab at my elementary school. Nostalgia overload.

I've been playing Oregon Trail on my Helio Ocean whenever I'm stuck waiting for something, and the memories it brings back are awesome.

I REALLY want Lemonade Stand for my mobile devices; wouldn't it be cool if someone made some of these classic games for the App Store?

This story really brought back a lot of great memories. Everyone knows Oregon Trail and Lemonade Stand. I also loved Carmen Sandiego. I'm still trying to figure out the name of one game I used to play at school on the Apple II during the same time period and maybe you guys could help me. It was kind of an educational puzzle game. You would go from room to room and there would be some kind of puzzle to go the next game. The one thing I can remember is there was a duck or goose or something and various keys. No, it's not that game for Atari with the weird duck looking thing. It was an actual duck and it made a quacking sound, well as best as one could be made on the Apple II sound chip.

Fun list, even if, sadly, I was just a smidge old for the Golden Age of most of these - I turned 10 the year Zork came out, and it's the one on the list that I was truly obsessed with. But c'mon - no "Rocky's Boots?" (Also, I think Windows Solitaire, addictive and productivity stealing as it remains - is a total cop-out.)

I worked in the group that created Where in the Universe is Carmen Sandiego? about 7 years ago. We created the visuals and 3D models for the video sequences. Lynne Thigpen, the lady who played The Chief on the TV show was our character actor, and she was really awesome! A whole lot of fun all around. Well, except for the deadlines. Those always suck.

Does anyone here remember the turn-based ascii game, War World? Now there was a game that killed hours and hours of my time! Very similar to Civilization, where you have to gather resources, forge alliances, and conquer everybody else. My college roommates and I had a friend with a BBS and a 14.4kbps modem. We would log on to his system and get a 1hr time limit each day to play our moves. Ah, simpler days.

That is so cool! Man, Lynne Thigpen. She is definitely missed. In addition to The Chief and many other prominent roles, she played the freaking DJ in The Warriors!

Sarcasm aside, that list really does bring back memories. I remember sitting in my grade school's fledgling computer lab, trying to show my teacher how to play Math Blasters. And Zork just makes me all nostalgic for the Hitchhiker's Guide text game... which I believe is playable online here:

Now up off to play the Hitch****rs guide text game and "Enjoy Vogon Poetry"

brendoman, article is good made me nostalgic, never thought I'd be longing for the days of acne and braces again. Thanx for the zork link, although you may be hearing from my girlfriend about me not doing anything else for the next two to three months. lol

Does anyone else remember a math racing game where the more math problems you got correct the faster your race car would go thus ensuring you'd win the race? I remember playing it way back on a black with green text screen. It was awesome. Is it just me? I'm pretty sure it was called "Math Racer" or something obvious like that.

In my opinion all these violent online games that children play everyday make them accustomed to violence. They can't easily see violence as something bad anymore, because they see it everywhere, on the tv and in the games they play etc.
