Zondervan, located in Grand Rapids, MI, kicked off a 90-city, 15,000-mile cross-country tour Tuesday to mark the 30th anniversary of its popular New International Version translation of the book. The tour will stop at special events, churches and U.S. landmarks to allow people to write out Bible verses. Even if we assume that there's a God, that doesn't imply that there's one unique God. Which should we believe in? If we believe in all of them, how will we decide which commandments to follow?

And I hope and PRAY that the moment before you draw your last breath that you realize that God is real, that He loves you and that He sent His Son Jesus to die for you and that at that point you will accept Him as Savior. Be assured of this - if you don't realize it the moment BEFORE you draw your last breath, you will be acutely of it the moment AFTER you draw it. But what if you're wrong? What if there's a brand new life that could be yours if you'd just open your eyes? What if there's peace that passes understanding and joy unspeakable and full of glory that you could have had? What if there's eternal life for the righteous, and eternal damnation for the unrighteous, and you miss it?

Hubert - You apparently no little about the Bible or Christianity. To make a statement that you "think that Christian's need their own Bible" is pretty ridiculous. Who do you think the Bible belongs to? Are you stating that the entire Bible belongs to the Jews so somehow Christians shouldn't use it? Secondly, the Jewish people do not believe that the New Testament is part of the Bible. They only use the old Testament. Thus, the reason the Jews don't believe that Jesus is the son of God. Per historical records from egypt the Exodeous was impossible as there were no slaves in Egypt. The ten plagues actually happened between 1200 and 600 bc. Due to a volcano erupting. The Arc would have had to also carry marine life considering that there would have been a massive desalinization of the planet's oceans. The bible is nothing but a book of myths. -

TO EVERYONE WHO THINKS THAT THEY ARE WRITING A NEW VERSION OF THE BIBLE, please re-read the article!!! They are only COPYING the verses of the NIV version and making a hand-written copy of the NIV version of the Bible. Several people have commented that this is the case, but a lot of people still aren't getting it!! Tha article should have said that they are publishing a new edition, not a new version.

There is currently digs uncovering Sodom and Gomorrah. I know one of the archaeologists and they have not done much writing on this topic yet. That will come out in a year or two. some of the information is on this site.

I agree completely. I myself am a Christian and am saddened by the fact that so many of my fellow brothers and sisters don't know their history. To even truly understand Christianity, you must first dive into the depths of Judaism. You'd think people wouldn't have a problem with this as Jesus was a Jew! However, some people seem to want to cut you down over the Crucifixion. On their behalf, I apologize. The problem is, even Jesus forgave the specific people who crucified him. Therefore, we should also. =0)
And as for the bible being handwritten, they're only allowing them to re-write versus provided to them so that its appeal is more real, rather than computer generated. I think that's kind of cool! Umm. Yes the Old Testament was written by the Jews in Hebrew. The New Testament was written by the "Christians" or the followers of Jesus, after he died. The New Testament was written mostly in Greek. Several years after it was written, the Catholic Priest decided what books should go into the Bible. Even today the Catholics have a different Bible than Mainstream Christianity. (No I am not Catholic but I have Catholic friends, and I summarized the several hours of conversations we had.)

You're right, but a lot of Christian sects - particularly those in Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe (Coptics, Ethiopian Church, Eastern Orthodox), who are much older than even Anglicans, the oldest Western European offshoot of Catholicism - have more or less books in their canon than mainstream American Christians. That's why it's so important to understand that the Bible is, dare I say it, an evolving book. It cannot be firmly set in stone because people across the ages have given and taken from it.

I can see your point, but it doesn't hurt to read the other books. God, or at least wisdom, is there, too, and some late antiquity Jewish works that were left out of Christian canon had a great influence on Jesus' message. You don't get the "Holy crap!" correlations until you read them, though.

I am sure you know by now, that they are not writing a "New" Bible, but handwriting the Bible that exists - NIV version. Each person will be allowed to copy by hand a verse from the NIV Bible and Zondervan will publish this Bible. The Bible that exists today is for Christians and a new one is not needed.

"The Jews" did not "write" the entire Bible, nor did they "write" the entire Old Testement, they use the first five books of the Old Testement in their Torah, the ones believed to be the word of God as He revealed it to Moses. The rest was put together from various sources by Christians probably a little over a thousand years ago. There are no good or bad guys in the Bible as far as the humans are concerned, the only "good" or "bad" would be God and Satan. Why must people always be so nasty and ignorant when it comes to religion? If you call yourself a Christian, then you need to try to be Christ-like (hence the name Christian) and not be judgemental or nasty against other people. He believed in educating oneself in the word of God, also, by the way. He was also born, lived and died as a Jew and interceded for their forgiveness from God as one of His last acts before dying.

This is crap. I don't know a single English translation that has 'God's aprooval' (sic). Those that copied the Bible during the numerous years (centuries) it was written and compiled were not "new born" because the ridicuous theology of being 'born again' hadn't been developed yet. And frankly who the hell are you to judge whether or not these people are filled with, inspired by or blessed by the Holy Spirit?
It's disgusting how little most Christians know about their own sacred texts. Especially the solid, uncontestable fact that the majority of Bible readers read it in translation from a high-context language (Hebrew, Aramaic, Coptic, Greek) to an extremely low and non-specific language (English). There is a frighteningly large amount of detail and specificity lost in the translations. Plus most people never consider societal, historical context in what they're reading.

The original Bible was written in Hebrew and Greek and TRANSLATED into "olde english" by King James as there were Latin versions before and the newer modern NIV and New KJ versions which are direct translations and even paraphrased really new translated versions like the Living Bible or New Living Bible. Get a KJ and a NKJ and a NLB and read the differences and see how close thus sayeth the Lord and the Lord says really is. it's good to have a preference you feel comfortable with but some versions make it real easy to BEGIN to understand the word, heart, and mind of God.

The last verse in the Bible, to not add or take away anything from this book, does NOT refer to the entire New Testament nor to the Old Testament. It refers strictly to the Book of Revelation. There was no New Testament until the 4th century AD. In addition, several of the books of the New Testament were written AFTER the Book of Revelation was written. I'm not in favor of revising the Bible but stop misquoting scriptures that don't apply to your point.

Yes, it was. The supposed "Word of God" was written by PEOPLE, not God. Their NAMES are on the books themselves. Book of John? Written by John, not God. Same with Matthew, Mark, Luke and all the other books with the author's names on them. And that doesn't even include the members of the Catholic church who assembled and edited the books of the Bible in the late 400's, choosing which books to put in, which to leave out and which ones to re-interpret as they saw fit, i.e. that meshed with their world view and was consistent with what they wanted people to think and do.

I'm in agreement with most of the people here. My only problem is that I beleive in a higer Being a Creator, a Supreme Being Etc, but not a word of what the bible has to offer. Interesting read, as it is , it is to inconsistant, and unbelivible. There are facts missing, and things that are just to impossible to explain (using the word Faith doesnt explain a thing). I do however believe itn the bibles ultimate lesson , which is to live a good life. Other than that , it is no different froma any other book about "gods". Just my opinion...

You are right, I don't REALLY know if things happened the way they said in the Bible because I wasn't there to see it. But, this is where the term "faith" comes into play. I believe in God, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I would rather believe every word the Bible says than to suffer the consequences when Jesus comes again. If it ends up not being true, I haven't lost anything. If it is true, I will live in eternity. I choose to except that Jesus died for our sins and we should try to live the best life we can while we are here. We make our own decisions in what we believe, and we will suffer the consequences of those decisions.

Being a father myself It's hard for me to imagine what would I do without my daugther. I've read your comments and I really wish I could say something that would make you feel better about what happened. But the fact is that I can't, I've never lost the person I love most, I've never met you little dauther and sadly I never will.
I won't even try to tell you what you need to do(as if I knew better); but I'll tell you what I think about why bad things happen.
The short answer would be, there is no why. Things just happen, there is no ultimate motive behind all the good or bad things happening right know. There are concrete causes, but most of the time it's just random luck that determines wether good or bad things happens to us. There is of course a way for us to influence such randomness, like being good to the people arround you increases your chances of them being good to you. But the ultimate randomness or certain events just can't be denied.
I know this doesn't really help you with your sorrow, but my point here is that bad things doesn't happen to good people only, they happen to everyone, despite of their faith, color, country, etc. It was not something aganist you or your daughter personally, this kind of tragedies happen to guilty and innocent alike. I know that doesn't help at all, they say in my town "Mal de muchos, consuelo de pendejos" ( something like "suffering of many, comfort of fools" ); but at least I hope this will help to ease the apparent anger you seem have to your ex god.
You don't seem to be an atheist like I am. If you are not, if you believe there is some supernatural force out there, seek for it. You may find the answers you seek.
I really hope you can find whatever you need to have peace in your life. -

The slave, Onesimus, referred to in the letter, is later mentioned by Ignatius of Antioch as Onesimus Bishop of Ephesus in the early second century.

There are many historical (non-biblical) supports for the Bible. Pontius Pilate did live and he was Governor of Judea at the correct time. There are historical records of a person name Jesus who was teaching in the area, was believed to have performed miracles and was put to death by the Romans.

It's likely, but not certain. Most ANE texts and especially Hebrew texts (along with the following Greek texts from the NT) have a long standing tradition of being attributed to famous theologians/philosophers to honor their thoughts and memory, even if they weren't written by them.
It's fairly likely, however, that some of the NT and Gospels were written by people who walked with Jesus or with people who talked to people who walked with Jesus, given that Christ died around 33CE and some of the earliest NT texts date from around 70CE. It's not unthinkable that someone who walked with Christ was alive 30-40 years later.

Grief is a process, it takes time to comprehend and accept, and its phases can last for a long, long time. i have tried everything from support groups to therapists (many in 3 years) I;m in a healthy relationship with a man who is very understanding.... My family still supports me even though I do not believe in what they believe in anymore. My friends are with me and keep me sane.... help me deal with it when the time comes to cry.... I know I'm not the first and I certainly won't be last.... I just feel sometimes that I must face this alone and deal with it... and it helps sometimes to talk to strangers who know nothing of you.... You may never find yourself on the path back to "Christianity" (I put that in quotes because there are a lot of people who claim to love Christ and apparently don't have a clue how he'd respond to someone in pain like you, but I digress! *_*) but as long as you find your way back to love and hope and compassion, you'll be okay. If I may preach for a second, that's what Jesus was there for anyway, for simple, honest compassion.
If there's anything to pray for, it's that you find some semblance of peace in a crazy world. I'm very thankful you've got so many who love you. -

No one and NOTHING else will get you through this. I am speaking strickly from experience. Not your friends nor your family will be able to get you through this one. Actually, this pain was allowed in your life, by God, to bring you closer to Him. One thing people have to realize is that, "God's people are chosen". And if He choses you, you're going. Not many people are open to happy Christian cupcake rainbow heaven when they feel like their soul is being ripped to shreds. Besides, Jesus came for sinners, not the spiritually healthy, but what does it mean to be a sinner? It means being broken, in pain, feeling worthless. Sin is a symptom, not a cause. Treat the source, the pain, and the sin slowly goes away. That's true healing. Finding the light by being loved, not judged.

I am truly sorry you lost your child. I can only imagine what that is like. I am also sorry that these people who call themselves Christians ( and they may very well be) are not respecting you. Everyone has their own opinion. I think it is wrong to fight with someone over a difference of opinion. I have my own beliefs that are different from most. My "religion" has been called a cult before. I have lost friends because of what I believe. I am a Christian that keeps the Jewish Holy Days. Right now it is the season of the fall Holy Days. I do not Keep Christmas or Easter Or Halloween. I do not think they are right. I do all of these things and I do not believe it is enough. I believe when I am running around town (I live 30 minutes from the nearest Wal-Mart) and I see someone in need I should help them. My biggest problem is fear. I am a 19 mother and I always have my daughter with me. I dont want anything to happen to her so I am more cautious of people, and they all scare me. My husband believes similar to me but he does not keep the Holy Days with me. He may one day but he doesn't at the moment. He is not afraid of people. He is 25 and has been trained in martial arts. If anyone messes with him he believes he can handle himself. He came home the other day and told me he didn't get to finish shopping because there was a man who was trying to live on 97 cents. My husband doesn't believe 100 % like I do, but he is a good person. I think that is all that matters. Please do not take offense to my next statement, it is meant as encouragement. I hope one day, when all is over you and your daughter may hug once more. I believe in the end, everyone will be shown the truth by whatever being is out there in control. (I believe it is God.) I believe we will all get a second chance to believe the truth. I hope we all find that truth.

I am truly sorry for you loss. God is not the one who "allowed" your daughter to die though. Satan wants you to believe this and it seems you do. Please find a church who believes in a loving God who doesn't cause pain, tragedies, diseases...unfortunately some churches teach the doom, gloom of Christianity which only turns people away from God not toward God. This is not how God operates today. He wants us happy, healthy and prosperous...but Satan is always there to try and twist things around and make us hate God. Who does this remind you of? Who gave his own life to spare his brothers and sisters pain and anguish? Who wanted to trade places with those destined to die so they could have another chance? I'm thinking that sounds a lot like Jesus.
Her love for her daughter and her pain at her loss is synonymous with God's love for us, and Jesus' choice to die in our stead. He is Smiley111, grief-stricken at our deaths, but he could change things and gave us another shot. She has the heart of Jesus, IMHO, but we must do our part to find our own heart of Jesus and encourage her, just as you have done. I know you posted out of care, but I just wanted to share that with you. I really don't think God would be jealous in this case, I think he'd be overwhelmed with how much she understood him.

Out of curiosity what is your daughter's name? Its good to vent and let it out. It helps with the healing process. It is difficult to understand how GOD works or why things happen. No one here will be able to supply you with this answer. But blaming him will not help you either. The reason why I keep stating to study the bible is because no matter how many times you read it you will always learn something new. Pray before you even begin, GOD will give you more info and he may answer some of the questions you have. If you want death of loved one to be the topic you study so be it. You can get reference books, books on why loved ones die, then reference it back to the bible. This way you can learn more before you just make the decision that GOD may not exist. We never know it all, there is always something more to learn. This may also help you with your grieving process. You will never forget your daugter but you arent expected to. She is a beautiful blessing even if she may not physically be here with you at the moment. But you will be together again someday and see her beautiful smile. GOD loves you very much and will always be with you.

I also lost my daughter to SIDS on 9/10/2002. Prior to this very sad day in my life, I didn't know what people meant when they said they "heard God" or "God told them..." I had no real opinions about religion. I believed that Jesus is our Lord and Savior, but I didn't know what that meant. But on that day, I remember standing in the ER feeling at peace. And a grief counselor told me I was in shock, and I needed to cry. I didn't say anything to her, but I remember thinking that's not what my soul is feeling right now. I remained peaceful for the days following my daughter's death, planning her funeral, comforting family and friends. I now know that I felt God's presence on that fateful day. So when things get hard now, I always seek that feeling of peace. I sincerely hope that you find peace. -

Hey Smiley, I am really sorry about your daughter. I was never able to have children of my own and often questioned why when there was others out there that was abusing the ones they had. I really have no idea what you went through and are still going through, but God does. His Son gave his life for us, but from your history I know that you know this. I also see that you are willing to give your soul to Satan for 5 minutes more with her. Don't do that. That is not a very good deal when you can be with her for an eternity if you give it to Jesus. I just wanted to let you know that I don't think it is wrong to be angry and confused. I would just plead with you to lean on God and not push him away. He does love you, no matter what. God is going to show you his love today in some way. I do not know how or what it will be, but when he does you will know it was from Him.

I went to chruch ever sunday and prayed every night,..... but in MY time of need no one was there.... I'm not posting things like this to offend anyone, but is it notmy right to have an opinion? ok again, I was raised very religious I went to private schools and attended church more than one should.... I prayed everyday and every night,,, for the simplest things.... like peace on earth and the health and well being of others.... i was never selfish or wicked in my ways.... I am sorry to hear that you lost someone that you loved dearly (cancer?) I havent lost a child so I cant say I know exactly how you feel but my mother did loose my sister a few months after she was born and I have seen her sorrow and pain. It sounds like you are mad at GOD because you lost someone you loved. You ask where was GOD when she died, he was right there with you. He was waiting for you to go to him. He comforts us and gives us peace. He never leaves us. I cant say exactly why this happened to you only GOD can tell you why. But if you learn more about him, read the bible, and develop a relationship with him he will guide you through this. This world isnt perfect because if it was no one would ever go to him. Unfortunately people usually live their life the way they want until things go wrong then they go to him as a last resort. It should be the other way around. The bible is more than just a book that tells us what happened way before our time. It is a book of instruction a guide to live by. I was miserable until I applied the bible to my life from the things we eat, to my marriage, raising my children, finances, sex, it's all in there. I am happier now for it. My life isnt perfect, as a matter of fact right now I am pregnant with my third child and just lost my job. Instead of panicking getting depressed etc I am praying and asking him for guidance and I am believing in him to help me find something else. When he closes one door he opens a bigger better door. Being Christian doesnt guarantee that your life will be perfect but that you will be able to go through it with the tools you need to survive and not succomb to grief or harshness of this world.

Before embarking on a re-write of the Holy Scriptures perhaps one should read what they actually say. Here are some key scriptures from the "Old" and "New" books you may want to consider to both Jews and Christians. From the Hebrew Scriptures Malachi 3:6 says "For I am Jehovah, I have not changed". While reading through many of these comments, I felt that the entire point of the fact that the "oracles of God " or, "the very words of God" were entrusted to the Jews according to Romans 3:2, was missed. Salvation is from the Jews according to John 3:22. Myriads ( tens of thousands) believed Yeshua ( Jesus Hebrew name) is Messiah, and they were all Jews.( Acts 21:20). Perhaps the Christians need to re-examine the Scriptures in the Hebraic context in which is was spoken, and come to know Yeshua as who He is, King of the Jews. Early believers were all part of Judaism, not separate from it or opposed to it.

Isn't it better to believe and and be wrong than not to believe and be wrong? Even as a history book, the Bible has never been proven wrong, unlike most other history books. There is scientific fact that things written in the Bible were factual. The bible being re-written will just give atheist another reason to say it was "just a book that men wrote". No-one is putting you down for your beliefs, so just back off. Just like in Noah's day, when the floods came the door was shut. Only 8 people were saved, then the door was closed, not to re-open for anyone who begged for mercy. Oh, and please remember, when two angels showed up at Lot's house in Sodom, the men of the village wanted to have sex with them, but because that was wrong, Lot freely offered them his TWO VIRGIN DAUGHTERS instead. Randomly, some scholars associate the Sodom men/Angels story not to be strictly about homosexuality, but intercourse between angels and humans. Well, if everyone would read the story correctly and go to the attached link you would see that the Bible isn't being rewritten, it is just being HANDwritten, hence the name of the article. As in, people will be able to write a couple verses of the standard, NIV Bible and contribute to this book. If they were to REwrite the book, I don't think they'd ask Billy Graham to take part.

Yes, the Old Bible IS better.....because it has God's name "Jehovah" in it over 7000 times! Over the years...as they made newer Bibles, they started taking it out down to the KJV which has it about 7-8 times. Now the NEW KJV doesn't have it al all. How can we get to know Him as a friend and personal savior if we don't know His name?

I hope no one is found adding or taking away from the precious Word of God. If you read in Revelations of the King James Version, there is a hefty penalty to pay for adding or taking away. I think it's great entertainment for God to see and chuckle at and for humankind to take a serious look at itself and decide if we have a serious problem regarding appreciating God's covenant with us.
The sad thing is 30,000 people, who may or may not have read the Bible entirely or understand a full verse or chapter, will write new verses and the publisher will make money off it mainly because out of 300 million American's, at least 1 million wuill buy it out of curiosity.
In this case I will take the wait and see approach. I can't help but say, God must be thinking...Fool me once shame on me. Fool me twice shame on you. But try to fool me and my people 30,000 times, the shame is on humankind. -

Why in the world do people still belive in this book that was written by a group of men thousands of years ago? I just don't get it at all. There are so many things that just do not add up in the bible, yet people belive it. I mean common, you want me to belive that Noah lived to be 900 and he collected 2 of every animal on the planet so the could reproduce on a boat?! Do you people know how many different species of animals there are? there are millions of insects! I just don't get it. And the fact that a woman claims she got pregnant by god and her son was gonna help and lead the people. If I made that claim today and truely belived it they would lock me up in a mental hospital. I mean think about it people, you belive in something because thats what you were taught. Smiley you are partially incorrect. Parts of the New Testament were written by Jews. The Gospels of Mark and Matthew were written by men who were Jews and were trying to get Jews to recognize that Jesus was the Messiah who was prophesied in what we now call the Old Testament. Saul of Taursus (who became the apostle Paul and wrote Acts) was a Jew who converted, but still observed Jewish beliefs while trying to convince the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah. The Gospels of Luke and John were written by gentiles who were Christians and sought to convert samaritans and gentiles to Christianity because at this point the church had dismal results at trying to convert their fellow Jews. The Jews refused to believe and at times persecuted the Christians. They tried to get the Apostle Paul for heresy on many occasions during his missionary travels.

What I find interesting is that God (the Abrahamic one) didn't seem to need people to speak for "him" back in the day. He was more than happy to give signs and smote people on his own. Somewhere along the way, God got very quiet. Why? Jesus said there would be no sign of who he was, yet, according to the novellas, what spurred the Apostles to spread the word after Jesus's death? They saw Jesus resurrected. Sounds like a sign to me.

In the end, the Bible is just the ideas of people trying to explain things that are beyond our knowledge. In Western Civilization, there is a clear progression of "God" moving from a regional god, of the Hebrews, one god among many, to the supreme god, the one and only.
It was lucky that Christianity became the chosen religion of conquerors, even though conquering lands and people is diametrically opposed to Jesus's teaching in the novellas, because it created in the Western tradition the ability to be greedy, kill people for their possessions, then get absolution by telling God you were "sorry." Oh, but we're keeping the goods. LOL-

People God never tried to prove to anyone that he existed, the Bible just said "In the beginning God." He showed the enemies of his chosen people his power while they were in bondage in Egypt, even they had to admit to His sovereignty and power. It does not matter what people write because we are to study to show ourselves approved unto God not man. All good and perfect gifts comes down from the father above, so when I want to find out what God is saying about a thing I go to Him and not man. it makes sense to go to God about what He is saying to me. Everyone else just confirms what He has already told you. His ways are past finding out, in other words some things we won't understand till we get to heaven. This topic is so vast, I do not have time or space to enlighten everyone. We all have to find the truth for ourself, but if God is calling and you reject Him at this time in this country, look out for His wrath, for the God of the Bible is a consuming fire, a God of wrath, peace, love, joy, and understanding.

God did not invent religion, man did. The Bible has some really good rules but it is mainly a History book. Now, the Quran has the same old testament that our Bible does and it has the same new testament as well except that it has many more gospels than the Bible because they didn't throw any out. Our early Catholic popes threw out all writings that they did not deem proper to include in the Bible. Israel is on the continent of Africa and 2,000 years ago there was not a white face on that continent. Just look at the Egyptian hieroglyphics, all brown and black. Moses was raised in the house of the pharoah and no one knew he was Jewish because he was brown too. There were no white faces there. Jesus, Mary and Joseph were brown and so was everyone else. So how do all the bigots explain that fact...? and it is historical fact.

Tim 3:16 says All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness. The writers of the Bible WERE Jews but what they wrote came from God. Even Daniel said while he was writing and prophesying that he had NO IDEA what he was writing most of the time,because it was of things coming in the future....things he had never heard of.... it really boggled his mind...but it was coming from Jehovah so he did as He asked of him and wrote what He put in his mind.
Matt 3:15...Be on the watch for the false prophets that come to YOU in sheep’s covering, but inside they are ravenous wolves.
Matt 24:4-36....Tells of the signs of the end of this system of things. If you read it you will know these things are happening NOW and FAST. More so every year and now more so every DAY. People, we all need to stay on the watch, not be fooling around with the Bible!! -

The Bible was written in the age of Pisces. We are now in the times of Revelations ending the world as we know it. We seriously are in need of the Bible for the Age of Aquarius. A good friend of mine lost her whole family in a car accident and had a similiar response of questioning her beliefs. I am sorry for your loss and I think it takes a while to get a grip on the existentiality of life after something like that.
Don't let people make you feel bad about a natural process of grieving.

As a non christian I think that it is kind of neat that they are honouring a holy book by copying ( not editing or changeing) it in the handwriting of real men women and maby children.
I would think that it would be inspiring for a chrisitan to be able to pick up a bible and read thier favorite scriptures in the handwriting of some real christian person who actually took the time to sit down and copy that pasage from the original bible.

Jehovah nor Jesus commanded that anyone be burned. The majority of Revelation is symbolic, as such is the lake of fire. It represents total destruction.....such as if you threw a piece of paper into a lake of fire it would be totally destroyed...meaning would not exist anymore. Jehovah is a LOVING GOD...would a LOVING human father put his child's hand into a fire?? No, and neither would Jehovah, our Father in the heavens, put anyone into a torturous burning hell. We all know that David lived thousands of years before Christ, and was dead and buried when Christ was killed.......This was his prophesy .....so ask yourself this question.....Do you really believe Christ was ever in HADES (Hell) as people see hell as a burning tortuous place??? You are focusing more on religion itself. Religion isnt what we should be focus on this causes problems. We should only focus on our relationship with GOD. Unfortunately in school we are taught that things need to be backed by evidence. But you must be aware that we dont have all the facts about anything "scientifically proven" Science changes constantly because we learned more about something or discovered something new. One day there is one theory about somethng and then its disproved by more findings. There is no real evidence for the big bang theory or that we evolved from monkeys. If we evolved how come humans havent been evolving or changing slowly into different beings? For all we know when they discovered the remains of homoerectus it was bones human bones mixed with bones of human. GOD's word is never changing. GOD is the same now as he was when time first began. I'm in agreement with most of the people here. My only problem is that I beleive in a higer Being a Creator, a Supreme Being Etc, but not a word of what the bible has to offer. Interesting read, as it is , it is to inconsistant, and unbelivible. There are facts missing, and things that are just to impossible to explain (using the word Faith doesnt explain a thing). I do however believe itn the bibles ultimate lesson , which is to live a good life. Other than that , it is no different froma any other book about "gods". Just my opinion...

This is something that you will never get over, but only learn to live with. But for your own good, and the memory of you daughter, just keep doing your good works, and keep on loving, just knowing that my little one doesn't have to face all the mean trials of life, and maybe face the evils of this world, the hardships that just go along with living, has helped me. I consider myself a Christian, but I am embarrast by the comments that have belittled your experience and viewpoints.
Christians are supposed to be COMPASSIONATE, like Jesus.
Jesus (the trinity) being compassionate, will not condemn you to a life of hell because of your lack of faith in times of trouble. I don't care what the bible says or how loud my companions thump on it, I am tired of hearing God's name as a tool to spew what is not righteous in peoples own hearts.
For example, "God hates homosexuals". God does not hate. Or another one "you will perish in hell if you don't subscribe the exact way that somebody else interpreted my words and wrote them into a book" . Sorry, don't believe that either, as we are God's children and God is merciful.
I believe we all know right from wrong inherently. Sometimes people do good because of the spirit that is within them, that I think is God, but they might not have that name for it. Just my thought on that.
Therefore-- It would not be just of God to condemn those to hell for what they have never experienced. For example, it is easy to sit at the computer and type ones faith, but say you are born in a third world country into poverty and you have never heard of Jesus. Is that child who has suffered on Earth going to be condemned to a life of hell? HELL NO! God will love and cradle that child, as he will your daughter.
Please Christians, stop being so righteous and understand that to THREATEN somebody with hell, so they are on your spiritual belief is 'satans' job.
As far as the new handwritten version or edition of the bible. It is a marketing tool by the book publishers. Hand written translation is not necessary. What's the point?
If somebody wants to write the versus of the bible down, go for it. But do not be so foolish as to contribute to hand writing it for a publisher who will line their pockets. Unless 100% of the proceeds goes to charity...that's 100% than it is fool's gold. Or worse yet....it's grasping at religion through commercialism. Sad to be fooled. But I'll pray for those of you who do. -

I'm going to recommend the JPS Etz Hayim (Torah and Commentary) for OT, the Brenton Septuagint for the Greek (w/Apocrypha), Biblia Sacra Vulgata if you love Latin, Oxford Annotated NRSV w/Apocrypha if you're stuck in English and the Barnstone/Meyer Gnostic for the stuff the others left out.

For even more of what was left out, you should read the Charlesworth Old Testament Pseudepigrapha. For ANE (Ancient Near East) text comparison, it'd be hard to go wrong with reading Kenton Spark's Ancient Texts for the Study of the Hebrew Bible.
That's if you're only going to stick with Judeo-Christianity.

As is meaning in the original Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, Coptic? Do you want the Hebrew text to include the vowel marks that are generally agreed upon or all the variations which could completely change the meaning of certain texts? Do you want the words to be seperated in the Greek? Or all close together with no spaces so you get to figure out where one word ends (or maybe doesn't)?

There are obviously many inconsistencies in the bible. Since there is the belief in the absolute perfection of God, it is only fair to attribute those inconsistencies to man's perception of the word of God. I wholeheartedly agree with smiley. I went through a very similar experience and can not believe in a god whop would kill my little girl for no reason. I laugh out loud at the bible and it's followers. It's 2008!!! We don't need hokey religions or ancient weapons to explain natural phenomenon anymore. I wonder how many of you "Cristians" actually walk the walk. Do you not handle money, do you sell your daughters in to prostitution when she has pre-marital sex, do you truly believe or are you simply scared of there being nothing when you die?

How about when translated? According to the Quran, they are supposed to be equal with the Quran as far as guidance goes. As a matter of fact, the Quran says you do good to follow the Torah. And, according to the Quran, the fault DOESN'T lie with the Bible, it hasn't been corrupted. but, the unbelief of it's adherents TOWARD the Bible. Of course, since the Bible and the Quran are total opposites when it comes to Salvation, what's that tell you about the Qur'an, O "I'm not a Muslim"? It tells us that the Qur'an is a complete and utter lie. WORSE, it's got 9:1-5, 29, and 7:3-5 within it. And, of course, 3:28 AND 16:106, allowing Muslims to lie their little turbans off.

I felt hurt that God would think that my child would be better off in Heaven than with me. My heart was broken, and in some ways it still is, but I have come to believe that God never leaves us. I cannot tell you why God allows bad things to happen to people, but I am convinced that when we hurt, God is there crying with us. I don't know if that will help you. I hope so. I can't stay here much longer because all of the anger and viciousness being expressed is wearing on me. Take care of yourself, and know that you are loved.

I would like to say thank you and my condolences to you as well. I may have come accross as a very bitter person who blames god and everything about him on the loss of my daughter. But i only meant that I'm still very confused about my religion. If i truly had the time to expalin why my daughter meant so much to me (i would be here forever) Long story short, my daughter came to me in an instant. and helped me. I believed that God gave her to me to tell me stop the bad things I was doing. and after I had succumed to that unconditional love, he just as quick took it away. and that is what hurts.... I have dealt with the fact that she is no longer here (allthough i feel sometimes she is, i can smell her and almost feel her presence next to me all the time) I just wish .... uh..oh I don't know what to think anymore.... grieving is such an exhuasting emotion. I wish I could have her back for 2 minutes more. I wish I could rewind the clock of time and watch her sleep. i was just looking for some one to listen...

They can only say what they "think" they would do. I am so very sorry for the loss of your precious child. I lost a 9 year old nephew to a disease called ALD which is extremely rare and affects young males only. {See the movie "Lorenzo's Oil" with Nick Nolte which is based on a true story concering this disease. ) We have no idea why he died but it was devastating. But the entire family does rejoice in the fact that we will see him again one day in heaven and he will be completely healthy. One day you also will be able to spend eternity with your daughter and all this will be forgotten. You will be so happy. But in order for this to happen you must believe in Christ and his teachings. Isn't that moment going to worth believing in him. I think so. But let it be known that you are very loved by a lot of people, more than you probaly realize. Finally, I hope to meet you and your daughter in haeave one day. By the way what is he name.

The Bible says The scriptures were written as Holy Men of God Spoke as God Revealed it to them. Just as moses received the original 10 commandments (By the way, Moses was not a Jew yet the first 5 books of the bible are referred to as the books of Moses)so have all those who followed in their writting of the scriptures. Job wrote "Oh how I wished mine enemy had written a book" because if you do not have your will written, you do not have to follow through with it. God backs up the Word since he has magnified it above his name. There is much the world does not know about God and his word since the enemy has done a good job in manipulating it. The 2 key points he cannot change is that Jesus Was and is the only begotten Son Of God and that he was raised from the dead having completely fulfilled the law and is living today working in those believers who chose to follow him building his church rather than some religious structure. Since the premature death of my mother, I have had a crises of faith. I became an Deist (not overnight, but after a long perod of reflection). I bought and read numerous books about God, religion etc. This book did nothing but make me angry. Supposedly I am supposed to kow tow to a deity who slaughters innocents for a "greater good."

All of the explanations about the problem of evil are circular and rely on biblical testimony. The Bible was written by Men and NOT by God. It is not infallible. Strobel cherry-picks the Bible--choosing what is to be taken literally and what is a metaphor for something else. If I were to believe even SOME of the Bible, I would have to conclude that God is at least partially evil in nature.
I also have to say that the analogy of the bear in the hunter's trap is the most pathetic thing I have read in a long time.
The author of this book claims to be a converted atheist asking tough questions from atheist perspective in forms of interviews with experts on Christiannity. However from the onset of the first interview it becomes very obvious that the whole thing is a pretense. After asking initial question (challenge to faith) and receiving first answer, any answer, he immediately assumes the role of wideeyed student and fails to give any real challenge in the follow up questions. Any freethinker could do much better job making those "experts" to work a little harder. The whole scheme resembles a martial arts movie where cohorts of opponents run towards the hero with thieir guards down only to be knocked down.
The book really insults the readers intelligence by assuming thier lack of critical thinking. Some of the arguments for faith go something like this: "Bible prophecies prove to be accurate because it predicted coming of Christ", or "Jesus is better than other leading man of other religions because he performed more miracles which is documented in the Bible" or "Eternal hell is humane and is expression of God's respect of human dignity because those that go there make this choice themselves by not accepting Him". In case you wondered about sensless deaths of millions of children from drout and famine- that is just a result of God's perfect plan that we cannot comprehend because our minds are so inferior to His".
By painting himself as convert from atheism the author attempts to misguide more gullible reader into thinking that these objections are the strongest that a freethinking person could give. The book aims at the audience that only read books written from christian perspective therefore lacking any knowledge and background in history of religion, mythology, historical background etc. It truly is a propaganda. Want a real challenge and like to make up your mind by yourself- read authors that really mean what they write insead of using cheap tricks. -

Moses wrote the first five books of the bible...the rest of the oral history of the Jews was reduced to writing over the next three hundred years by various sources, and that is the old testament. I figure that most was inspired writing because we know that it was Jewish people that wrote the stuff, as it is their history, and a close scrutiny shows that the Jewish people broke over 470 covenants that had been amde with God. So why would a Jew write and record such betrayal? I figure it to be because of inspiration, otherwise I am befuddled.

The new testament was written beginning about 70 a.d., well after Jesus time. The compilation we now know as the Bible was produced by the church that is now known as the Catholic church. The leaders of that group picked and chose which letters, accounts and other renditions were to be included as part of the Bible. The four gospels had differing views on different events but all were included to show openness. Therefore, to all the literal interpretators and "the Bible is God's word" proclaimers, I say blow it out your rear. It is subject to interpretation and needs to be placed in context. Which is why Christ always used sheep in his parables; the people of that time understood the significance of sheep following the master's voice.
Grow up people, and grow a brain cell or two while you're at it. -

The writing have lost much of it's meaning, by the multiple early translations from Aramaic, to Hebrew, to Greek and so on that the last 500 years or so is been used for justifying oppression destruction and war.I think is a very toxic reading and has devastating effects when practiced.Is a book written by very smart men to control other men of limited mental capacities.There are other writings that are more inclusive and elevate the soul, with out proclaiming any one as "chosen", or mapping some "promised"land and they do not depict God as a punishing force, taking pleasure by installing guild and punishing his creations (very Jewish this one) -

smiley111, you're not smiling. You have a great deal of anger in your heart and I think it is caused by tremendous pain. The lose of your child had to be devestating and will always be, but have you ever thought of the fact that your child is in heaven with God and unless you change your opinion of Him, you will never see your child again. Children are special in the eyes of God. Maybe he took your child to be with Him because your heart needed to be changed and He needed to get your attention.

LOL...the Good Book in all it's forms was written, compiled and edited by mortal man....and goes thru another editing by every single soul that reads it. Another edited, printed version will just give more people reason to argue their's is the 'correct' version. Sounds like politics to me and at the moment, we're up to our necks in it. 1. I got to the "story" as many of you did, by clicking a link on AOL's home page that caught my attention. So much of AOL's "news" these days are actually BLOGS, as is this "story" posted by txclimber. Anyone can write a blog. It is poorly written as can be evidenced by all the misunderstandings in these comments. If you follow the link in the blog, it takes you to bibleacrossamerica.com, which states "Zondervan believes that a completely handwritten version of the NIV Bible by people from all across our country will help America rediscover the Bible in a fresh, new way." PEOPLE ARE NOT REWRITING THE BIBLE, MERELY COPYING IT BY HAND.
2. PLEASE review your comments before hitting Send. So many of these comments are unintelligible due to misspellings and just mistaken word choices (example, "is it better to believe and be wrong, or not to believe and be wrong?") Huh?
3. Finally, my heart goes out to Smiley. She is crying out for someone to listen to her confusion about God and to help her. I ask my fellow Christians to please pray for her, and that she will not continue to turn her back on God. No one but God can know why bad things happen to good people, but He will make it clear to all of us one day. Your lack of faith is apparent in some of these comments. Our bible was transscribed from original Hebrew and other ancient texts and thus was blessed by GOD in doing so. The writting of a "new" bible is unnecessary and quite frankly nothing other than lies. Do you need another book to which to base your faith? There is good and bad in all human nature, your life is the prayer and that is one of the many lessons which GOD tries to express to us.

I read most of the blogs and have come to the conclusion that this world is in a sad shape. When satan has almost succeed in his misson to make man/woman think that he nor god exist. Why would those of you who don't believe take the chance of loosing your soul to all of these new world lies. Unless in fact you don't believe you even have a soul. I find it ironic that you believe in what you were taught in school and embrace that learning and not the one of christian teachings. All things that exist are not always tanigble, like the wind or love. Think about the blind person who has never seen anything. They believe in lots of things they have never seen or touched. My interpretation is that someone came up with an idea to make MONEY. Nothing new is being said... it's just being rewritten by people who find it interesting... and there will be MANY.
As all the posts demonstrate, everyone holds a position with the Bible... whatever you want to believe. My point is look at the numbers this simple article evoked.
The person who came up with this idea is going to make a lot of money. Wouldn’t you go out and buy the book if you where a participant? You’re not writing anything new... but participating in something that means a lot to a lot of folks -

It's funny, most people ask why God lets bad things happen to good people, but I wonder why God lets bad things happen to bad people as well. I don't believe God sits around waiting for a chance to smote anyone. I believe God loves everyone, so why does God allow pain and suffering? But, in this room many of the contributers seem to be far more upset with the idea that God allows good things to happen to 'bad' people. They don't seem to want a loving God, and certainly not the passionately loving God that Jesus described.

Tho I believe there is a higher power, I've chosen not to give it a name. I believe it guides. I don't believe it causes events, saves, or condemns. It IS. And that's all it needs to be. Whatever your religion, if it works for you, that's a good thing. I must say, the concept of being 'saved' is a bit baffling. Must I believe in the tenets of YOUR beliefs? Is the concept just a safety net to make us feel better for the things we've done or haven't done for that matter on this plane? If I've lived a relatively good life, I don't see a reason for concern. If I haven't, my 'hell' is right here, right now. If one thinks one can be 'saved' despite one's actions/thoughts, it seems just a way to leave this world in a better frame of mind...even if it's only the last 5 seconds. But then again, that's not belief, only desperation. Until all the factions stop the arguing and the finger of God pointing, I find it useless to attach myself to the battle of religious oneupmanship.

Secondly, who's to say for sure which religion is the accurate religion. After all there are multiple cultures that predate Jesus by thousands of years that had nearly the same beliefs that Christians do today. The Egyptians (3500 BC) believed in Horus who was born of the Virgin Maya (I believe), on December 25th, he had 12 deciples, performed miracles, was dead for 3 days, and was resurrected. Sound familiar? There is a list of at least 20 cultures predating Jesus that had all of these same qualities, a little more than ironic I would think.
Doesn't one of the 10 commandments state thou shall not worship false idols? Who's to say what is false and what is not. We all believe what we are told to believe and we do not question it. I, for one, do not believe anything unless there is substantial proof.
I am not saying that there isn't a "God" I do believe that there is a higher power, and I believe that if you are good and do good things you will be rewarded. But I DO NOT believe that murderers and child rapist will be rewarded simply because they accepted Jesus and I will go to hell because I do not. This is CRAP!!!

Yes, it is a little slow at first but definately one of the most interesting movies I have had the opportunity to watch. I have seen many religions throughout my life. At a young age my Bible thumping hyprocritical grandmother forced us to go to her Babtist church, my stepmother was Jahovah Witness, I had friends that were both penacostal (probably not spelled right, sorry) and catholic. None of these religions make the least bit of sense to me.

I think America needs to WAKE UP before we are all doomed. I recently began investigating many aspects that are currently occuring in our world and I am scared to death! Youtube has me ready to crawl into a cave somewhere between the LHC, New World Order, RFID 666 chip (mark of the beast),and HAARP articles that they have posted.
Like I stated in my earlier post I do believe that there is a higher power somewhere I just don't believe in the same "God" that the religions of the world push you to believe in. I think that religion is the same as government out for absolute power and money.
