First, I just want to let the record show that I was and am totally anti-Bailout. However, it's just not right, or truthful for that matter, to bail out all of the big banks saying that the loss of jobs and shut down of credit would hurt our economy too severely and then turn around and say that failure of the Big 3 automakers would not have a similarly devastating effect.
How exactly is it acceptable for our Govt to reward one industry for making bad decisions by giving them money with very few restrictions and then do the exact opposite for another, equally important IMO, industry? All of a sudden, our Govt cares how companies receiving taxpayer money are spending it... This is hyposcrisy at its finest people, considering the issue of spending habits was barely even discussed when they were deciding whether or not to bail out the big banks without the nation's consent.
Really though, the only reason Paulson, Bernanke and Bush favored the financial sector is because they, and all their rich buddies, work in it! This whole thing was and still is a really bad joke! Coercive power was used to pass this Bailout and that is never a pre-cursor to good things.
Forget about the fact that our own President (GW) went out of his way to instruct Congressional members to ignore the voices of their Constituents and to pass the Bailout measure. UNBELIEVABLE! That's just plain treason IMO... Bush's statement to ignore the voice of the people shows how very little respect our Govt now has for the Consitution. It disgusts me and eventually this country is going to get to a point where people are going to start to do something about it. Hope that times comes in a pro-active manner rather than a re-active one.
