Have you been to Asia? Do you know how complex things are now? (I've lived in both China and Japan, with time spent in a number of Southeast Asian nations as well.)
When China instituted its one-child policy, it ensured that much would change. Respect for the elderly may have been a social norm in previous generations, but a wave of self-centered children is growing up without sibling interaction; these children are the focus of the entire family and there is no guarantee that family dynamics will be what they were a hundred years ago.
Detailed discussion of how that stereotypical guarantee of respect for the elderly in other Asian countries is also no longer the case would start to get too far from the them of this article.
