Well, catholics have a NeoCon pope at the moment, but that will change again. As usual the catholic "leadership" is in disagreement with the majority of catholics.

"""A New York Times/CBS News Poll conducted Jan. 13-15 found that among Catholic women throughout the country 28 percent said abortion should not be permitted, while 33 percent said it should be generally available to those who want it. Thirty-eight percent said it should be available but with stricter limits. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus six percentage points. """

So by your statement church doctrine should be determined by consensus of the congregation and not by scripture. No need for a Pope or Vatican, just ask the people.

        spare me the false piety.

the church makes up its own rules and passes them off as holy law with only fleeting and occasional reference to the scriptures. the most glaring being the pope and his vatican neither of which are determined by scripture but only by the church itself, consensus or not

''should be determined by consensus of the congregation and not by scripture.''

who do you think decided scripture was 'scripture'?

          a consensus of congregated people

who do you think the Vatican and the Pope are?

          a congregation of people

          ------

if you want other people to tell you what you should do and what is sacred and what is profane, to decide things for you, that's up to you

but if that's up to you, shouldn't other people get that right? the right to distinguish the sacred from the profane?

as for a consensus, if one man is right and everyone else is wrong, than he must be

'a majority of one' -Henry David Thoreau

JC knew this and bucked everyone, all the religious leaders of the time and even his own followers
