Hmmm, wrong, not until Vatican II did the Catholic Church officially shut down its Inquisition office. Why did it take all those centuries? Furthermore, why did they never apologize? I suppose that in the year 3,000, the Church will finally admit to the error of its ways.

I think the movie "Dogma" has something to say on why they never apologized. Since the Pope is supposed to be God's hand on Earth, and God is infallible, therefore the Pope must be infallible, and if the Church were to admit that what a Pope did was wrong, then the Pope CAN'T be infallible, and thus not be God's direct representative on Earth.

In short, to come out and say a certain Pope was in the wrong allows the possibility that the Pope can be wrong. Which would somewhat diminish his power and sway.
