I know it's not really what the article's about, but good God.

"Bombing civilians saves soldiers' lives"? What about the others we put at risk that way? What about winning "hearts and minds"?

    WHAT A F'N IDIOT.

FTA: "Retired U.S. Ambassador Charles Dunbar, speaking recently at Kent State University about the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan, observed that "bombing civilians saves (our) soldiers' lives.""

I've copied out the same quote too, Beau, because it sticks out as a sore thumb. It is true of course, at least in the short run, and I'm sure that's how the suicide bombers think too. One suicide bomber can kill dozens of other people with a fairly high probability, so it's an efficient method of waging war when all you have is some explosives and your own body. The problem is that it feeds this never-ending cycle of violence that results in more and more deaths. I wonder whether we'll ever reach a stage in our development when people start considering what's right and wrong instead of what's efficient.

Short-sightedness has always been a weakness of imperialists.

Dunbar's statement makes about as much sense as "We had to destroy the village in order to save it."
