Comments for Man Jailed For 2 Months After Deodorant Mistaken For Cocaine »
Posted By TimALoftis 1 year, 2 months ago in NewsA Minnesota man who spent two months in jail after being found with white powder has been cleared after tests showed the powder was deodorant, not cocaine.
Cornelius F. Salonis, 31, was arrested Aug. 3 on suspicion of drunken driving and jailed after police said they found cocaine in his car. Salonis's attorney blames a faulty field test for the false positive result. Prosecutors dismissed the felony drug charges Wednesday and allowed Salonis to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of drunken driving--and the defendant was freed.

I once had my car searched because i had mini powdered donuts for breakfast and some of the powder got on the seat. They said that they thought it was cocaine, but i think they really knew it was donuts and just hoped to find more.

Relly should have a television show that says "Worldest Stupiest Police Stories" Like the one they have for worlds stupdiest crimnals. Cops are the very insecure of there manhood are the sexuality that is why most of them try to prove something by making false arrest betting the **** out of innocent people. If you dont agree with them they turn into a little Moffia (Gang) in your own town and come after you. DO NOT TRUST COPS THEY ARE THE REAL CRINIMALS OF OUR SOCIETY>

IDIOT WE ARE NOT IN MEXICO. YES IF THEY ARE SUSPECTING IT IS COCAINE THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO ARREST HIM GET YOUR THINGS STRAIGHT. AND THOSE IDIOTS WHO SAY THE COPS HAVE TEMP. TEST THEY ARE IDIOTS TO THEY HAVE TO TAKE IT TO GET TESTED AND YES THEY GOT BETTER THINGS TO DO THAN TAKING CARE OF SOME STUPID IDIOT WHO NEVER TOLD THEM IT WAS DEOROANT. SO YES THEY WILL TAKE TIME TO DO THE TESTS. AND THAT IDIOT IF HE WAS NOT DRINKING AND DRIVING NOTHING WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE SO YES HE IS STILL A CRIMINAL AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER IF HE CRASHED AND DIED. LIKE YOU MOFOS WHO THINK COPS ARE CRIMINALS TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR.

You call us morons? Do you think posting in all caps makes your point any more believeable? Cops are nothing but JACKBOOT criminals with a license to exactly what they want, when they want. With that said, cops like everyone else are subject to being held responsible for their actions, but sadly people like you perpetuate more beliefs that cops should get a break. Hell no, the cops are just as dumb as the alleged criminal in this case, and as you have clearly demonstrated so are you. I think we should develop a minimum requirement of education before you can post any comment!!!

This is a goof ball story and I feel for the guy.... love the fun comments, but to those who continually bash cops... it is funny to know they will be the first one you call when you are in trouble... and you know you will... that is an even bigger laugh... and the biggest laugh of all is on the police--because they will actually respond, put their lives on the line and do their job to the best of their ability as humans... can you believe that... WOW now that is funny...laugh it up -

You people who talk crap about the cops should think that they are the only thing that stands between you and people like me who don't care about fair or moral we just don't like jail, not fear it or avoid it but don't like it. If it were not for the police we would take what we want from who we want. So if you want to get rid of the jackboots I am all for it you might have something in your garage I can sell.

Yes most cops are retards that got beat up in school they go to class for 6 weeks then come away with a gun and badge and think they are untouchable. See what happens when you give a retard authority they charge you for possesion of coke, for having good personal hygeine. Cops suck

WHY DID HE HAVE A BAGGIE OF POWDERED DEORDANT WITH HIM? IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, I THINK HE WAS TRYING TO PASS IT OFF AS COCAINE AND WAS CAUGHT, WHICH BY LAW (ACCORDING TO THE COPS TV SHOW) IF YOU ARE REPRESENTING SOMETHING AS DRUGS IN ORDER TO RIP SOMEONE OFF (GRASS, PLASTER, IN THIS CASE, DEODORANT) THEN IT CARRIES THE SAME PENALITIES AS IF IT WERE THE ACTUAL DRUG. DOES NOBODY ELSE SEE THIS? WHY WOULD SOMEONE CARRY A BAG OF POWDERED DEODORANT AROUND IF NOT TO TRY TO RIP SOMEONE OFF?

For bellt1977, why do you automatically defend the cops. First, of all if you ever watch tv. then you would know that all cops carry a cocaine test with them and if it doesn't come back positive then it isn't cocaine, so they had no right arresting them. Second, the dude probably has to use powder deoderant because he has a disease or something. Last, when you take the cocaine into the lab to be tested it doesn't take 2 months for the results come back. The cops did wrong and they should drop the DUI charges for compinsation for him possibly loosing his job and any other problems that might have happened.

"Salonis's attorney blames a faulty field test for the false positive result. "

Wow... your point about the field test is a little off there. And, the world is not CSI... tests can take time. I've had to wait 3 months for simple blood tests before because of backed up labs. Things can take time! And, if the powder tested positive in a field test, it isn't gonna be rushed ahead of everything else. Give the cops SOME sort of break here. I'm not saying cops are perfect, alot aren't. But, give them SOME benefit of the doubt.
And, why, when it's an issue with a faulty test should they drop the DUI when the man was truly breaking the law. The company who made the test and maybe the lab (depending on how backed up they were) are at fault, but not the cops in this case.

bellt -- yes you are right. They can arrest and charge you

with 'intent to sell imitation controlled substance'. He probably already had an ongoing drug charge still pending.
If they caught him before but didn't prosecute for whatever
reason, a lot of times they leave the case open for a year and
if he is caught again they then add that charge to the still
open one. Sounds like they wanted to catch him with something.
Hard to believe they actually thought deodorant was cocaine,
and he probably was selling it to poor, unsuspecting drug addicts. who, by the way, must be some REALLY stupid druggies
to snort (or whatever) deodorant and think it was coke and pay
for it! -

What the police probably found was the rolled up pieces of deodorant that fall from under your arms when you use stick deodorants. Not a bag of deodorant. It actually happened to me at work. My boss saw white clumps on the floor and questioned me about it. Knowing what it was I suggested he taste it. Good thing he didn't for his sake.

Cops are required by law to administer field tests and to follow specific procedures depending on what the test results are. Per the story, this deodorant gave a positive reading for cocaine, therefore the cops were required to charge the man. Could have been a faulty test procedure, faulty field test equipment, or perhaps there really was enough coke mixed in to give a positive. The main point is this: the cops are required by law, because WE, THE PEOPLE have demanded standards for them. If there is any fault here, it is with those who set the standards and guidelines the police must risk their lives every day trying to enforce.

DRHEMLOCK, while I agree that these cops were idiots and there are some "bad" cops, I have to disagree that ALL cops are criminals with badges. As the daughter, fiancee, and aunt of some very devoted, intelligent, and moral police officers, I know that not ALL cops are bad or idiots. Your saying so is just a generalization and is just as bad as any other predjudice out there.

Well now doesn't that police department look foolish, I agree how can anyone particularly law enforcement mistake deordorant for cocaine? Aren't those people supposed to be experts? Thank goodness the intoxicated man didn't overeact and was arrested only.

I got harassed like that before... not for deodorant though. It was a bottle of antibiotics! They made me wait forever while they verified it was, in fact, antibiotics. However, the article doesn't state if the guy had previous drug arrests/ any arrests. I'd be interested in knowing what/if he has a prior record... I'm also not proud to say, I know what coke looks and feels like, and only an idiot would think it was cocaine. Sorry popo.
The cops in my area are prejudiced jerks. Not to mention criminals. I hope this makes up the minority of police officers because I've had some awful experiences. -

I have a question... Do people who post here know how to use the shift key or do they hit caps lock and forget how to shut it off? Someone should develop an idiot function to delete their post before it hits the screen if it is in all caps.

Mistakes can be made by anyone in any field of work. I also want to point out to those bashing the police in anyway that what goes around, comes around, and I pray that you never need an officer to help you in anyway because karma is a bitch!!-

I want to thank all the individuals who have responded to this article. It's the first article I have read in months that did not reek of politics and hate. It was really a refreshing break. As far as the article is concerned, the cops messed up. The biggest mistake we make in hiring our police is that we have to chose them from the human race. They are not machines. Thnk back. How many times have you messed up on the job? Probably a lot more then we would care to admit. I guess we all make mistakes.
