Star Trek hero Patrick Stewart to play Time Lord »

Acting legend Patrick Stewart is to make a giant leap across space — from Star Trek to Doctor Who. He has agreed to a major role in the Time Lord’s next series after teaming up with the Doctor on stage.

The pair starred in a production of Hamlet in the summer. Patrick — Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek — has been offered a role in a two-parter involving the Daleks, set to be screened next year.

The new series will also see the return of classic alien enemies the Ice Warriors and the Zygons. Patrick, 68, is a big Doctor Who admirer and has spoken in the past of his desire to star in the show.

I know the Sun doesn't have the greatest history of accuracy in the world . . . but man do I hope this is accurate. I would *love* to see Patrick on Doctor Who.

I'm happy to see him in the show. Glad though that he isn't the Doctor himself. Just my opinion. I see him as too much of an authority figure. The Doctor has traditionally been pretty aloof.

Now here is a non-partisan issue we can all agree on! Patrick Stewart on Doctor Who is would be even better than, say, William Shatner on Battlestar Gallactica. Well, maybe...

This would be very cool if it does happen ... the revival of Doctor Who has been wonderful - great cast, characters, writing, producing ... all excellent. Seeing Patrick Stewart in a Doctor Who story would be awesome!

I can't believe this series has been on as long as it has, constantly reloading with new cast members. Patrick Stewart is a terrific actor and adds to whatever he's part of - Wil can speak to that better than me, with his frame of reference.

On a sadder note, I miss seeing Billie Piper in the show...she's adorable.
