KC, I live in Obama country, and people are very excited about him--many saying they know he'll fix healthcare, that he's pro-women's and gay rights, that it's just time to have an African-American president, that his voice and presence are more presidential, that he'll do more for education, and that he is not anti-science.

They also think he will end the war faster, and raise our global political capital. And in a nearby state that is equally split, he is gaining ground, especially among white women, Asians, and latinos. His real winning local position, however, is his intent to expand all things "green" and promise to create "green" jobs. This is an area with lots of natural resources.
He seems so much like Jimmy Carter that I think a lot of people find him irresistable because of his promises, and they just aren't willing to really examine his history or positions from a philosophical or practical perspective.
I thought last night he looked polished and attractive, his voice was very compelling, and his vocabulary was solid but not pretentious. And he's learned some specific taunts that he used effectively. He also now has solid platform points canned and ready to serve. I think he's still superficial and gives away trade secrets I personally would keep to myself, but the audience mostly hasn't studied the issues enough to recognize this.
I'm not sure it's really about the issues for a lot of people. I remember seeing a documentary on Kennedy and Nixon, where Nixon had the most depth and positions on issues popular with most people, but he simply didn't have the look or the voice.
