I'm with you. It was a draw in terms of influencing people one way or the other. Both of them repeated the same crap over and over, excepting the one-upsmanship crap on negative attacks.

Obama didn't shine and McCain sounded like a patronizing old grandpa talking to a five year old.
Let's have a real debate. Long with plenty of chances to go back and forth. -

I was almost bored with the debate...I do think Obama eeked out a minor win, but that's only because McCain seemed rather lifeless himself.
So, it wasn't a game-changer for McCain at all... things seem to be the way they were before the debate, with Obama maybe...maybe...getting a little more out of it... -

Step on into the real world. Welfare had diminished significantly across this nation, thanks to Bill Clinton! But trust me, the failed economic policies of republicans are going to swell those welfare rolls beyond recognition. And I won't even bother with the welfare to the rich, which republicans give out like candy. -

You may be right that neither one won the debate in terms of arguments given (I actually think Obama did, though) but I think style may be just as important as substance. McCain reminds me of Bush in that he always looks like he's being put upon and can't wait to get away from the cameras. He looked, confused, woozy, light-headed, glassy-eyed, fairly unhinged, reactionary, and peevish. Kinda like someone who might've left his Preparation H® back at the hotel.
Reply
Obama, on the other hand, reminds me somewhat of Bill Clinton (minus Clinton's hammy, "I know you know I know you know I'm cool" demeanor) and seems to welcome the opportunity to interact with the public. He seemed measured, forceful, thoughtful glad to be there and he looked really sharp and classy in that suit. Oop...My shallow side rears its head. I hope Palin isn't patrolling these boards.

McCain's health plan is out of touch with reality. You can't shop insurance from state to state. Each state has it's own regulations. And if you think that billing for medical expenses is complicated now add the problem of using out of state insurance to the mix. It will be a total mess. Then there's the whole question of state's rights. Dose he really think that the states would go for such a plan? I don't think so.

What surprised me even more than his health care plan was his housing plan. Although it wasn't perfectly clear, it sounded like he is planning to buy the mortgages of families who might face foreclosure (thereby assuring that the banks don't lose on it), and then adjust not just the interest rate (which probably is reasonable), but also the principal to current market values.
Reply
Now, if I understood this correctly, if the family I've seen in Foreclosure Alley, who bought a house for close to $400.000, and whose house is now worth $180,000 finds that they are no longer able to pay the mortgage, their mortgage would be bought by the government and they would have to pay back only $180,000 at a lowered interest rate, and the government would pick up the difference.
http://www.blacklistednews.com/news-1759-0-0-0--.h...
At the same time, those who struggle, but barely manage to keep their heads above water would pay the whole $400,000. This sounds really bizarre to me, even if I disregard how much this would cost and that it's money he doesn't have.
It seems that he considers home ownership a right, but health care a "responsibility," mostly the responsibility of the person who needs it. -

What I found most telling about John McCain in both debates was his total lack of respect example the first debate he kept looking down and would not look at Senator Obama when criticizing his differences. But yesterdays debate there was one comment that was

John McCain can not accept the fact that both he and Barack OBama are senators and presidential candidates. That makes them equals in the political arena. I think there's a similarity between this situation and the Father Phleger skit about Hillary. "Where'd that young black guy come from, I supposed to be president".

Watch my lips, stupid!!!! IT'S THE ECONOMY!!! This election is about people who have lost their homes, their jobs, their income, their retirement nest eggs and cannot now retire. This election is about corporate hogs that have fattened themselves on the sweat of average working people and in so doing they have destroyed the worlds greatest economy. This election is about hundreds of thousands of jobs sent below the border and overseas so corporations can exploit cheap labor and escape work place safety laws. This election is about hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens pouring across our borders and the administration refuses to move to stop the inflow; it's about the US Attorney prosecuting and imprisoning border patrol agents for defending themselves against drug dealers. This election is about a President who looked into the face of the American people and lied about Weapons of Mass Destruction and used those lies as a foundation to fight a trumped up oil war that has cost the lives of thousands of Americans. It is nothing short of amazing that in the face of this kind of lying and economic devastation many of you are still dredging up old, outdated lies and innuendo and using this disinformation to justify your decisions. The truth is you can't see anything but a white man in the White House and you will grab at any straw to support your twisted logic. Why don't you just roll up your tent and let John McCain and his Republican cronies take what little you have left? You want to elect to office the very people that have robbed you blind.

Obama did make a mistake in saying that the bottom line is taxes and business costs in the U.S. are lower for big corporations than in other countries. If that were true, their home offices wouldn't have all been moved to the Bahamas, accounting to Sophia, and tech support to Dublin or Bangalore or New Delhi. And anyone who could move, did move. I'm surprised no one has commented on that.

"You want to elect to office the very people that have robbed you blind?" Do a little reading up on current affairs, please. The whole economy mess didn't start on Bush's watch- there was a little thing called deregulation signed in by SlickWilly Clinton in 1999 that started the deregulation. McCain warned about Freddie & Fannie needing more oversight TWO years ago, but good old dem Barney Frank wouldn't listen, neither would Dodd. Please get over the WMD thing, would you? Clinton and everyone on his watch thought Iraq had them, too! This war isn't over oil, either. I think the USA is ready for a black president (you just have to throw in the race card, huh?) but just not THIS one. Obama stands for socialism! He can try to slide as far to the middle as he thinks he needs to win the election, but as soon as elected he'll again be the ultra liberal that he truly is. I'm tired of people too lazy to get up off their butts and actually work for a living complaining about the "rich keep getting richer". There is ample opportunity in this great country of ours for any one that wants to WORK hard to achieve it. Too many people grew up with the welfare mentality that our country OWES them something; whether it is healthcare, housing or jobs. I'm all for helping those who really need help and I do help with contributions to charities, churches, voluteering etc. Everyone needs to quit whining and start working, even if it takes two jobs to do it! Been there, done that!

Yes, the Aussies, who disarmed themselves so women and the elderly have no reasonable means of stopping a home invasion, and whose leader came right out and made bigoted remarks about the Muslim religion.
Reply
At least the U.S. tries to keep religion separate from government so we all have freedom to believe or not (the more extreme Republican gremlins sometimes do slip in), and so far our constitution has held up so women can keep the tools needed to protect themselves in their homes (the more extreme Democrat gremlins sometimes do slip in).

Now, Pharkar, don't try to make us give up our whining rights! We all like to point fingers and feel self-righteous! Everything is an experiment, but we've set up a system to always punish the experimenter instead of just trying to see where the failure occurred and then going on to the next trial.

According to the latest Gallup poll Obama is now up by eleven points. No amount of dirty campaigning or appeals to the culture warriors are going to save McCain. I am sure they will try to engineer an October surprise but its not going to work.Republicans have lost their credibility with the American people. Their sleazy tactics are falling on deaf ears. They certainly deserve part of the blame, but don't forget that you can't spend money that the banks are not willing to loan you. People were careless, but they are amateurs whereas the bankers are professionals. I tend to blame professionals more. Moreover, the banks couldn't have overextend themselves and speculate in all kinds of very risky derivatives if the government had kept an eye on their activities to protect the people.
I know, I know, that's socialism, the arch-evil in the world. -

Good point. But, you forgot to mention the predatory lenders, that were allowed to ply their trade, unregulated.
Republicans would like to live in some sort of dream world were they don’t have to pay taxes and there is no government. Well guess what? Taxes and big government are here to stay. Instead of trying to fight it, much better to make sure it works for you. Make sure it does what is in the best interests of the majority its citizens, not the just lobbyists and the political in crowd. -

Pharkar, i go to a doctor for his expertise and diagnosis since i do not know squat about medicine. When i went to my local bank for my mortgage i relied on their advice as to what percentage of my income i could reasonably afford, they protected myself and themselves. I am no expert on mortgages but i was helped and protected and i now own my house outright. I am glad to be Canadian where my interests were as important as the bank that lent me the money.

The polls quoted in this article CNN and CBS are both liberal leaning TV networks so more liberal viewers. I really wasn't looking at style of debating. I was listening to the words they said. I felt much more comfortable with Senator John McCain as President with the world in turmoil. He understands foreign affairs much better. Our domestic situation will mostly have to revive itself and it will be the small businesses that do it. We need to stop the wasteful spending. As John McCain once said, "they are spending like drunken sailors", up there in Washington.

Have you ever wondered how the John McCain who had promised to veto any bill that had any "pork" in it whatsoever could sign the bail-out bill that had $150 billion added to it, so a bill that was originally $700 billion became $850 billion by the time it was passed? -

THE SMALL BUSINESS TAX THAT OBAMA WANTS TO IMPLEMENT ON BUSINESSES THAT MAKE OVER $250,000, IS THAT GROSS OR NET INCOME. IF IT IS GROSS, MOSTLY ALL SMALL BUSINESSES WILL BE HIT WITH A 62% TAX, THAT WILL CAUSE A HIGH PERCENTAGE TO FAIL.

No, no, no, you've got that all wrong. It is McCain who promised to buy your mortgage, lower the principal to current market value and give you a low interest rate. Isn't that nice of him? The rest of Americans can pick up the tab for the difference between the principal of the mortgage you've stopped paying and the current market value. He is a generous guy, isn't he?

After watching the first 20 minutes it was over for McCain. As I stated before a decent man but horrible candidate. After both candidates voted for the bailout bill I no longer have a dog in this fight. As for Obama he has come a LONG way from his first debate (which was a trainwreck) so the person he has to thank is Hillary. Of all the debates I can't think of one he won, until these last two.
