I could care less who "won" the debate. Neither of these yokels has the slightest idea on the most pressing issue of our time, the economy. But then we always have put too much importance on the election of the president. Our concern should be who we elect to congress.

So how DO you fix the economy?
Reply
Do you think it's something that can be bandaged and healed with a simple plan?
Personally, I think the troubles with the economy stem from a long period of caring about profits over people. Too many have been out to make a quick buck without regard for the person they're taking it from. How can a President come up with a plan to change that?
How can a President come up with a plan to fix the real-estate and stock markets, when it's quite possible that value "lost" was a bubble? Furthermore, should they try to fix it? If you restore the bubble, then you just have it waiting to pop again. If you accept the current devaluation as a correction, you can take steps to try to ensure that a similar bubble doesn't occur in the future.
Things I would do to fix the economy?
1. Make it more difficult to outsource jobs and import cheap goods.
- This is in the best interests of the American worker, but it WILL raise prices of goods in the short term. This will make things more difficult for a time, but as the good-paying jobs come back, people will be able to pay for things.
2. Tax mega-corporations more heavily than small businesses. They reduce their overhead by putting Americans out of work. A small business employs more people per unit of production, and management also has a personal relationship with employees. Lay-offs are much less common, because of the human factor. Of course, these companies are less profitable so the "economy" doesn't seem to benefit, just the people.
3. Decrease the profitability of debt-spending. Legislate interest-rate limits on credit-card companies. Current rates are VERY close to loan-sharking, and companies just encourage you to borrow for that next vacation (instead of saving). Again, the immediate effect on the economy will to DECREASE available credit and spending will decrease. In the short term, it will cause hardship, but long-term will be better for the health of the economy.
All three of these are long-term strategies that look bad for the short term. Consider them choemotherapy. They make you temporarily sick, but in the long term might destroy the cancer that's killing you. -
