The fact that Todd Palin was trying to go after a bad guy and she is being slapped for not doing enough to stop him probably doesn't make her look like a bad governor to most fans.

I think Palin and Obama have a lot in common. They both came in without all the facts and they're having to play catch-up. He had some months' head start, and has finally found his groove, and she's having to do a crash course. Both of them and their partners have some very strong opinions I don't agree with, and I'll have to go on the attack to retain my rights, irrespective of who wins the election.
My biggest concern is that we don't get another single party controlling the administration and both houses of congress. It doesn't work well, irrespective of party. We see how the Republicans add "God" to everything, and Obama just doesn't get the reality that countries are going to have to use tools like birth control and not just depend on wealth redistribution--especially since the U.S. is beyond broke (it was broke even with the surplus, but no one likes to point that out). -

Another fishing trip for the Democrat(ic)s. Even the most casual observer can see this was far from a bipartisan report. The Democrat(ic) state Sen. Kim Elton, the chairman of the committee that released the report and Democratic Sen. Hollis French, who oversaw the investigation are as Partisan as they come.
Reply
The Democrat(ic) Party was quick to use the report as fresh ammunition. "Gov. Palin has violated Alaskans' trust," said Patti Higgins, Alaska's state Democratic Party chairwoman.
The inquiry looked into Palin's dismissal of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan for insubordination, who said he lost his job because he resisted pressure to fire a state trooper involved in a bitter divorce and custody battle with the governor's sister. Palin says Monegan was fired as part of a legitimate budget dispute.
Stephen Branchflower, a retired prosecutor hired to conduct the investigation, said Monegan's firing was 100% lawful. The report found that his refusal to fire the trooper was "likely a contributing factor" in Monegan's termination in July, but it also concluded that the governor's decision was "a proper and lawful exercise of her constitutional and statutory authority" to hire and fire department heads. What? the Democrat(ic)s say. "Lawful"?
Had Palin not pushed for her x-brother in law's firing for drinking and driving a state trooper car, tazzering his 10 year old step son, fighting in bars, making death threats against her father, hunting without a license and general behavior unbecoming of the Dept. then the Democrat(ic)s would have come out and said she was protecting him because of the Family ties.
This is childs play compared to Obamas support of Marxist AL-Quada supporter Odinga in Kenya, or his long time close association with Domestic Terrorist William Ayers, or Obama giving ACORN $800,000 recently and trying to cover it up because of the voter fraud activities ACORN is involved in (that Obama himself taught ACORN workers to use) by stating it was for "stage and lighting service", his direct impact on the current financial crisis and his long association with Rezco and the corrupt Chicago political machine.
For Example: U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign paid more than $800,000 to the liberal Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) for services the Democrat's campaign says it "mistakenly misrepresented" in federal reports.
An Obama spokesman said Federal Election Commission reports would be amended to show Citizens Services Inc. -- a subsidiary of ACORN -- worked in "get-out-the-vote" projects, instead of "Staging and Lighting" for major events as stated in FEC finance reports filed during the primary. -

The problem is that there aren't enough of her fans left to matter. She now has a net negative approval rating. She is dead weight, and if McCain keeps her around he will be routed on Election Day.

Were that only the case. Best to remember, that the ones that are left, are packing bibles and guns. That can be a very dangerous combination. Democrats should consider applying the “Bush Doctrine”.

The good news here is, for everyone who thought that the abuse of power (at least by the party they liked) is an OK thing, she has shone she does have experience.

In the debates she made it quite plain she intends to expand the role of VP, as is given to her by the constitution.

McCain gets what he deserves for not properly vetting his VP. Sarah Palin is the most unqualified potential VP ever... and now a joke to the ticket. Her words have no power of being a "change maverick". Seems the pitbull with lipstick is just as guilty as those she accuses!

McCain was reckless and irresponsible for choosing such an inexperienced and unethical person to be a heart beat from the presidency.
That completely irresponsible lack of vetting alone shows that McCain does not have the judgment necessary to be president. -

So she's a criminal. Why am I not surprised. I can't wait to hear the spin they try to put on this one. It was a bipartisan commission. So politics isn't the excuse. McCain has shown poor decision making ability in picking this woman (and I use that term loosely) as his running mate. Sha-na-na-na, Hey, hey, hey, goodbye! And they tried to make Obama look like the Chicago thug. Hypocrites!

Whether or not she's abused her power doesn't change Mr. Obamas associations. BTW, they didn't say she is a criminal. The report is confusing at best. She didn't break the law by firing him, but violated ethics rules.

She's not a criminal, jovial. It's a slap for not acting strongly enough to stop Todd's actions. The criminal part was dropped.

I don't know if Obama was naive, just an opportunist who grabbed what came his way, or what, but he does have some strong associations over time with some bad people. I suspect he wasn't really aware of it. Even with Rev. Wright, it had to be brought to his attention after 20 years. I suspect he's so busy being involved in productive action that he really doesn't learn about the seedy side of his associates.
If I disagree with any of the 4, it's on the issues and their current strong associations. None of them has a record of illegal activity that worries me too much.

This report doesn't bother me at all. The bottom line is she didn't break the law. It said his refusal to fire Wooten "likely contributed" to the firing. In other words, they couldn't find ANY PROOF, and they did find other legal reasons for his reassignment. The worst this report shows is that she's a politician. That's no surprise to me........

But the report says she did break the law. When you violate a state law - in this case an ethics law ruling over political behavior - it is by definition unlawful. Outright, plain and simple. If you can't accept and acknowledge that, I don't know what to say. And if you read the report - you can download the pdf - and the Alaskan law - you can go online and find it easily - you'll see that conclusion is clear. You're practicing moral relativism and situational ethics here when you defend her. Conservatives hate moral relativism and situational ethics. In the neocon playback, they're two of the evils from the liberal 20th century. Yet they practice them all the time when you spin somebody's bad behavior. Isn't anyone thinking at all out there?

I Lewis Libby didn't break any laws either according to the republican tush kissers and as a consequence of his impeccable integrity Bush had to commute his jail sentenance for a felony conviction. According to your ilk, GehlLady, there was no proof in the Libby case either, brilliant, just brilliant. I think I'll write in your name when I vote for the President on NOv 4.

They did find she did not act strongly enough to stop Todd Palin from following up on the bad cop. Todd said she told him to stop and he did it anyway. So she's being taken to task for not handling him. The personnel issue is not complete.

First, she did break the law. Read the darn report. Second, you do understand that what you're suggesting is called a totalitarian government, not a democracy, right? I have long suspected based on comments, behaviors and excuse-making for lying, corrupt politicians that there are conservatives who actually hate American Democracy. They don't understand the Constitution (esp. separation of powers) and don't care how many laws or principles are violated so long as their guy wins. You do know that the guys who follow Leo Strauss' philosophy - Rove, Wolfowitz, Pearle, Cheney among them - believe that it's their right to throw the constitution out the window in the service of their own ideology, right? Seeing these ridiculous defenses of Palin on here just help make this clear - Many conservatives do not like American Democracy and basic democratic principles. Unlike you guys, though, I would never say "America, love it or leave it." You're welcome to stay, but you've got to obey the constitution and the laws. And Sarah Palin did not do that, according to this report.

Those partisans that were predetermined to be 'for" her will not be swayed much by this. It's the independent and "swing" voters that will be turned off by this sort of behavior and leave McCain's camp. I'll bet McCain is wishing he had picked a viable woman candidate like Olympia Snowe. Ahh , but she wouldn't appeal to the religious kooks and anti-abortionists. Sorry republicans--keep this in mind the next time--your share will look bigger if you can take your half out of the middle. In other words , pick a moderate with a brain next time that has a good track record of bi-partisan compromise under their belt. Not another divider with skeletons in the closet with pending investigations. Let me guess.. the McCain handlers thought they could squelch this with legal manuvering....

We'll see how it plays out. But something obviously changed in the inner circles of Repug management 2 days ago. All her staff who had refused to even respect subpoenas to testify suddenly switched course. Even Tod Palin himself testified, and gave pretty damning testimony.
Reply
It certainly looks like the man behind the curtain has decided she's a liability, and she will soon withdraw from consideration for VP in order to clear her "good name" in this politically inspired smear campaign against her. Mind you, the Alaska legislative committee that found her guilty of abuse of power is made up of 10 Republicans and 4 Democrats. Obviously a Democratic witch hunt -- NOT.-

fsev418 months, 3 weeks ago
Not exactly correct. The original "troopergate" investigation was a legislative committee investigation sought by the whole Alaskan legislature. When the McCain campaign butted in they made a claim that the accusations should be heard by a state personnel board and so there was a second "investigation" by that board composed of three members, all appointed by Palin.
Reply
The legislative committee subpoenaed Todd and the governor's aides and it was those subpoenas that were disregarded. Todd Palin and the aides agreed to "testify" before the personnel board but I don't beieve it was under oath.
To the best of my knowledge the personnel board has not released their findings.

The Wall Street Journal reports the official McCain/Palin response to this report is as follows:
Reply
“Today’s report shows that the Governor acted within her proper and lawful authority in the reassignment of Walt Monegan. The report also illustrates what we’ve known all along: this was a partisan led inquiry run by Obama supporters and the Palins were completely justified in their concern regarding Trooper Wooten given his violent and rogue behavior. Lacking evidence to support the original Monegan allegation, the Legislative Council seriously overreached, making a tortured argument to find fault without basis in law or fact. The Governor is looking forward to cooperating with the Personnel Board and continuing her conversation with the American people regarding the important issues facing the country.”
http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/10/10/mccain-pa...
Ummmmm...."Today’s report shows that the Governor acted within her proper and lawful authority in the reassignment of Walt Monegan." Did they read the same report that the rest of us did?????? They are truly delusional, and I see that her supporters are already jumping on board with this revisionist version in her defense....incredible!-

I would be a hypocrite if I said I was not glad this report shed some light on McCain's trophy Bimbo. She was a joke from jump street. McSame picked a nobody that knows nothing, and is a power freak. If the trooper was a threat to anyone he would at the very least been assigned to the rubber gun squad. Palin felt so threatened by this trooper she reduced the size of her personal security squad, she reduced her body-guards, is that the act of someone concerned about their personal safety??
