As for Palin, well yes, that "power abuse" in Alaska is a small matter. It's wrong, but....... I'm sure a lot (not all) of people (on BOTH sides) may do the same once and a while.
However, if you (like her) always pretend that you are the best, with no faults, a pure Christian, criticizing the others (sometimes without foundation) then you should yourself be blameless.-

Klarissa has a "minor" obsession with Obama. Whether she gets paid to spend as much time as she does digging up dirt on him (while not ever trying to convince us of what McCain CAN offer us, anyone's guess but she does seem to have a very unhealthy preoccupation with the guy. I have a feeling the Secret Service will need to keep an eye on her. ;-P

From what I read the report by the legislative panel was not unanimous and members urged caution in their interpretation that Ms Palin may have violated ethics law and that it was an opinion only and that no legal action was recommended. Would it be fair to conclude that this is an interpretation by left wing kooks? And of course anyone who does not agree with you is a moron, how incite full. Some would suggest that the fact that the incompetent trooper was not fired was proof of inside influence. And what did Ms. Palin gain again? I missed that part.

The panel agreed she did not do enough to stop her husband from following up on the trooper who was a former brother-in-law. She told him not to do it, according to his testimony. The reassignment itself was not shown to be a problem.

Sounds like Todd was angry about the threats against the family and the tasering of the child and thought the drunkenness in his cruiser would be enough to put him off the force. In my state, the trooper would have been out for tasering the child.
So it looks like Todd's emotions got the better of him and he didn't listen to the governor. But Gov. Palin didn't come on strong enough to stop him, so it's a breach of ethics for her.-

That is the question I been trying to find the answer to and there is nothing I can find about Todd being appointed to a position to carry out actions for the governor. If he did fire the trooper, he carried out an act that he did not have authority to carry out. so, since Todd didn't have the authority to fire anyone, the ruling that she did not do enough to stop Todd from firing the trooper is a misleading statement.

``Governor Palin knowingly permitted a situation to continue where impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda,'' said the state legislative investigator's report released yesterday in Anchorage. The report also said Palin's dismissal of the commissioner, Walt Monegan, was a ``proper and lawful exercise'' of her power to fire department heads for any reason.
He didn't fire the trooper but he tried to pressure someone else to do it.

You see, the committee in question is sponsored by a conservative friend of Ronald Reagan with conservative businessmen and conservative activist all setting at the same table with Ayers. The accusation against Obama concerning his pastor flies in the face of ignorance to believe that Obama has been influenced by what a pastor believes but Palin being the recipient of a ceremony to have the witch removed from her is proven by documentation of film.
The accusation that he has advisers that had ties to Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac has been debunked by Snopes.com and others but McCain who now has Rick Davis on his campaign is a proven fact. Rich Davis' firm by the way was being paid by Freddie Mac for work they never performed until last month.-

There have been to judges who have looked at this on the news last night who felt the ruling was mis represented and there were no ethical issues envolved as there was no real personal or finacial gain.
People will read into this all they want, but when you have people from the police officers own town suggesting he should have been fired long ago, it seems to me that the Palins were correct!-

I think Palin and Obama have a lot in common. They both came in without all the facts and they're having to play catch-up. He had some months' head start, and has finally found his groove, and she's having to do a crash course. Both of them and their partners have some very strong opinions I don't agree with, and I'll have to go on the attack to retain my rights, irrespective of who wins the election.
My biggest concern is that we don't get another single party controlling the administration and both houses of congress. It doesn't work well, irrespective of party. We see how the Republicans add "God" to everything, and Obama just doesn't get the reality that countries are going to have to use tools like birth control and not just depend on wealth redistribution--especially since the U.S. is beyond broke (it was broke even with the surplus, but no one likes to point that out).-

Amen to that! Haqving only one, criminal, bought off party holding congress AND the White House for the past almost eight years has brought us to where we are now.
The so-called "two party" system is the basis for the rot we find ourselves unable to treat.
It would be great if lobbyists and corporations were forbidden to contribute ONE CENT to ANY party.
But that would leave everything to the citizens, and while we have money on the conscience of politicians, they will continue to exercise "conscience over constituents".

Everything was going good until the CRA foreclosure mess tripped the crash in housing prices that led to the banks and other institutions going bankrupt and many being bailed out. Credit dried up because of all of the money sucked out when the real estate prices dropped. CRA was a Democrat compassionate creation. Obama working for ACORN sued Citibank in Chicago to force them to give out more bad loans. Obama is part and parcel in this mess. ACORN lobbied Congress starting in 1990 to loosen up the guidelines for Fannie and Freddy. They were successful in doing so after Clinton was elected.

The reason this whole mess came was McCain's adviser and former senate banking chairman Phil Gramm who pushed a deregulation veto proof bill through the senate in 1999 that took all regulation off the banking institutions. It was only a matter of time after that for the collapse to happen. He collected over $1.5 million for his effort.

Bush has been in office for the last 8 years and yet you're saying that the Republicans were against this when they were in control of Congress but they were totally powerless to do anything about it? What stopped them. Regale us with the chronology of events starting with when the GOP took over in the early 90s (because cons seem to think Barney Frank and Chris Dodd held the GOP hostage all those years).

You really, REALLY need to read this from NEWS WEEK reporters. They went to Alaska, and looked at the court records. Palin and her family accused the trooper of a lot of things, WITH ABSOLUTELY NO EVIDENCE THAT HE HAD DONE ANYTHING! Before Palin became governor, she was warned by a judge that if she and her family didn't stop bad mouthing the trooper to the children, the children would be moved away from there, & full custody would be given to the father. The law in Alaska recognizes that turning children against a parent is CHILD ABUSE. I'm going to say it again. She was told to knock it off three years before she became governor! The trooper was never charged with anything. He was found guilty of nothing. A court investigator found that the family was alienating the children from the father. They found no evidence that the accusations against the trooper was true. The mother apparently didn't want him to have custody rights at all. AGAIN! The trooper was found guilty of NOTHING! He was charged with NOTHING.

This isn't just some spurious accusation. A judge found her actions to be alarming and possibly illegal. Pitting children against their own Father? Apparently Gov. Palin is only "pro-family" when the family member in question is on her good side.
This article is over a month old, yet it wasn't a particularly widely-reported news story. I get the feeling Gov. Palin has become "Teflon Sarah" at this point. Not much is going to stick to her. She's anti-abortion, and that's all that's important to the masses who show up at her rallies.-

Amazing how the lie-du-jour New Republicans lurch from this to that lie. After working so hard to get control of the entire government, they now claim that control of the government is a bad thing. Funny, it worked well under FDR to bring an end to the great depression that the Republicans brought on. It worked to win WWII. Government gridlock with the Roadblock Republicans in the Senate is a great deal of what's wrong right now.
The New Republicans claim that government can't do anything right, yet they desperately want control of the government, so much so they will tell any lie and use any smear to get their hands on the reins of power. To compare Obama and Palins knowledge of the "facts" is a joke. Obama was Magna *** Luade at Harvard Law, that is the number one Legal Doctoral Student at on of the world most renouned Law School. He has taught constitutional Law and as an undergrad he studied Political Science with emphasis on Foreign affairs at Columbia University.

Poor Endo cannot follow a story properly. There were two rulings in this case.
#1 the one right wing cons want to point is the ruling that she did not break the law in the reassignment of Monegan's was within the law and within her rights as governor but her actions .

What's more, she didn't break any laws and after listening BOTH sides, I'm not so sure she's guilty of abuse either. You have to read the entire story, both sides. Wooten was a loose canon and Monegan disobeyed Palin on budget matters aside from the family squabble, etc. He deserved what he got, imho of course. First, she did violate a state ethics law, according to the report. So stop this nonsense that the report says she did not violate the law. Just read the thing for yourself. Second, she lied. She lied to Alaskans and then lied to the rest of America. She did not say in July that she was justified in her actions because Wooten was a bad guy. She denied that anyone - her, her staff, her husband - had applied any pressure at all. She was still saying that the week of the Republican Convention. Then, when it became clear that wasn't clear, she claimed that her staff had pressured state officials without her knowledge (Do you believe Todd did this without her knowledge, too?). Now we know all of that was BS. So we have 3 issues here: Did she break state law? Did she abuse her power? Did she lie and try to cover it up? Even if - and this is big if - she passes sniff test #1, she clearly fails #2 and #3. If you are an ethical and law-abiding person, how can you defend her?

Apparently after the embassy staff were captured and held hostage, one of Carter's options was to punish the Iranians by bombing Iran. He refused to do so because it would kill too many innocent civilians. He refused to do so even at the cost of his presidency. That is holding on to a morally and ethically principle at a significant cost to oneself.
As far as Clinton is concerned, I do not recall any national or international economic crash. I do not recall ever increasing budget deficits and soaring national debt. I do not recall a universal collapse of financial loss of confidence and national loss of sense of well being. I do not recall a rising tide of despair and panic. I do not recall a loss of over a trillion in assets within a one week period. I do not recall the pursuit of an illegal, immoral, useless, ruinous war.
In fact, under Clinton, I only recall the exact opposite of everything above.

He has backed out or off many promises he has made when they became unpopular, or he got schooled by some in his own party. I don't know if Obama was naive, just an opportunist who grabbed what came his way, or what, but he does have some strong associations over time with some bad people. I suspect he wasn't really aware of it. Even with Rev. Wright, it had to be brought to his attention after 20 years. I suspect he's so busy being involved in productive action that he really doesn't learn about the seedy side of his associates.

But the report says she did break the law. When you violate a state law - in this case an ethics law ruling over political behavior - it is by definition unlawful. Outright, plain and simple. If you can't accept and acknowledge that, I don't know what to say. And if you read the report - you can download the pdf - and the Alaskan law - you can go online and find it easily - you'll see that conclusion is clear. You're practicing moral relativism and situational ethics here when you defend her. Conservatives hate moral relativism and situational ethics. In the neocon playback, they're two of the evils from the liberal 20th century. Yet they practice them all the time when you spin somebody's bad behavior. Isn't anyone thinking at all out there?

I'm not a conservative, first. I admit I didn't read the entire report. I will go back and do that. The info I commented on was the cable media assertion that she broke no laws in her reassignment/firing of Monegan. The abuse of power was becuse she did not stop her husband from pressuring him for the removal of Wooten. Yes, I am thinking, I'm thinking this is normal for a politician, it's nothing new. That is what is no surprise to me. Does anyone here truly believe ANY politician is not guilty of the same thing at some time in their career? In modern politics it's SOP, standard operating procedure. It's just my opinion, and in America, I still have the right to voice it, so far.

Sure you have the right to your opinion, even the right to be wrong. But is this the new aspiration for Americans, to use free speech to demand the right to be wrong, the right to abrogate moral responsibility, the right to ignore reality? Is this the best we can offer as citizens? If so, we have sunk low indeed. To say everybody does it is not an excuse. When our children say "but everyone is doing it," do we then say as parents that that excuses bad or questionable behavior? No, we say that each individual is responsible for making good, wise, sound choices despite what others are doing. Why do you seem to have trouble applying that same moral standard to Palin? In this instance, I don't care what other politicians may or may not be doing. It's about her in a very specific incident. The report says her actions in applying pressure to the situation were unlawful. If you let cable news tell you what is true or not true, you're going to be horribly misled. Part of being a citizen sometimes demands informing yourself and doing some work. I'm sorry if you don't see such responsibility as part of being a good American. And again, no one is saying you don't have the right to voice your opinion, and no one is going to take that away. But you should be able to account for it when asked.

You were not the poster I was referring to with my "voice my opinion" comment, but you can't say no one is saying I don't have the right..psychohose for one.....I don't have a problem 'accounting' for my opinion when asked in a civil manner, I have the ability to disagree without personal attacks or assuming attitudes not expressed by another person. Your polite lecture on responsibility and the assertion that I have the right to be wrong is condescension personified.

If you reread my original post you won't see approval of her actions. Lack of surprise is what I said."The report doesn't bother me" may be where I didn't make myself clear, I didn't intend that to be taken as approval or an excuse for her actions. Yes, I should have read the report for myself, and I will. But if the report said her actions towards Monegan were unlawful, why would the media report otherwise? You seem to be reading far too much into my lack of confidence that either party acts with the highest of ethics. If this is the worst skeleton in her closet, it doesn't bother me. Her environmental record does.-

Whether it is clint and his not keeping it in his pants or ray-gun making a movie and thinking it was real (as a tail gunner) cheney and his many comments "SO" or "FO" or his hunting accident, or 5 deferments, shrub and his Nat'l Guard experience or lack of, all have twisted or spun details, and will continue.
More than 90 % of elected officials are lawyers, and they are masters of spin, so why expect anything else out of their mouths, but the media has found it more important to cover Paris or Brittney.
Time to elect some ordinary people, salt of the earth type.
Is Palin a mistake,,,,yes as she is in over her head, I can just see her winking at Putin or loud mouth from Iran (who may very well be voted out of office next year) or just trying to deal with another Katrina, she will drop the ball.
Besides, she is a mud slinger, this terrorist BS is a dead issue, it is just a smear on Obama who was 7 when these allegations happened.
And also all politicians have dealt with unsavory characters past, present or future in their lives, and will continue to do so.
What is important? Is it the rising unemployment? Vet care? falling dollar? economy? or is it allegations on McC and the Keating 5 BS (25 years ago) or this terrorist BS when Obama was 7.
Maybe we should debate how they part their hair, or colour of their shoes next.

I certainly didn't mean to be condescending. But when you said in an earlier post that ethical breaches are "SOP" for politicians and therefore her actions didn't bother you because of that, to me it rang as cynical and uncritical. I'm glad hear this is not the case.

Just so you don't think I'm pulling your leg, Finding No. 1 of the report states that Palin "abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.11(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act."
As to the media: Every news channel I saw cover it last night - CNN, CBS, MSNBC, BBC - reported the findings as an "unlawful" act. I didn't see Fox, and I don't know if Fox is what you saw, but I could tell you in advance that Fox would probably not highlight that part of the report. However, all the major news channel websites last night - including CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC, and even Fox - did report it as an "unlawful act." All the major print organizations covered the story as an "unlawful act." It was even in the headlines of most. Why? Because as I started out with, the very first thing in the report's findings, in Finding No. 1, the special prosecutor says outright that Palin violated the state's ethics law.
We can disagree over how much that violation bothers us, but anytime an elected official is shown to have violated ethics laws, especially a candidate at the very top levels of the ticket, it should be a huge red flag about that person's character, leadership and attitude toward the law. Don't forget she spent weeks lying about this. She is still lying about this this morning, if you believe the 263-page report and its 1,000 pages of documentation. She thinks she's above the law. That's more dangerous than nearly any policy view she could have, in my view, because it speaks to a level of corruption we should be unwilling to accept.-

It was Anderson Cooper, for one, I flip around the channels. I get tired of the same pundits predictably saying the same cr*p over and over. I haven't had time, but still intend to read the report for myself. The distinction made was her violation came from not restraining her husband, not her actions regarding Monegan. I agree with much of your post, but yes, I find myself more cynical with each election cycle. It's why I'm an Independent. I feel I'm voting for the lesser of two evils. I think more than anything else, watching Wooten admitting, on video, he tasered his 10 yr old step son put me in the postion of excusing what she did. His excuse that the boy wanted to be tasered doesn't excuse his bad judgement in the least.

I have read the report, and don't see a reason to change my position. It smacked of small town politics, and detailed instances of his conduct that would have had him removed eventually regardless of the Wooten issue by any govenor, not just Mrs. Palin.

No, it is the point entirely. I, as well as the rest of the posters here, can only guess why a law enforcement officer kept his job with nothing more than a 5 day suspension after admitting on video to tasering an 11 yr old child, his step son, never mind the rest of the complaints. Common sense tells many of us he has no business representing any law enforcement agency, and doesn't have the judgement necessary to carry a badge and gun with authority to shoot to kill. We have all heard of 'the thin blue line', but unless there is someone here within the Alaskan Trooper Dept. with intimate knowledge, we'll NEVER know.

That's the way I read the report as well. Personally I don't think Todd did anythink wrong, either. The only complaint raised by the Palins that I read in the report I didn't think fair was the shooting of the moose. Wootens wife, Molly, held the permit and was with him when he shot it. Mr. Palin, Sarah and Mollys Dad, helped butcher the doe, and the family shared in the meat. It still was an illegal shooting, and as a Trooper he knew it, and didn't care. The man has no business with a badge.

They did find she did not act strongly enough to stop Todd Palin from following up on the bad cop. Todd said she told him to stop and he did it anyway. So she's being taken to task for not handling him. The personnel issue is not complete.

I like a guy who thinks troopers should be fired for a combination of tasering a child, death threats, driving drunk in a cruiser, and illegally killing game. But he should have backed down after Gov. Palin asked him to. Are there official sanctions for first ladies and gentlemen who don't listen to the Gov?!

There are actually people out there that disagreed with your comment. First, she did break the law. Read the darn report. Second, you do understand that what you're suggesting is called a totalitarian government, not a democracy, right? I have long suspected based on comments, behaviors and excuse-making for lying, corrupt politicians that there are conservatives who actually hate American Democracy. They don't understand the Constitution (esp. separation of powers) and don't care how many laws or principles are violated so long as their guy wins. You do know that the guys who follow Leo Strauss' philosophy - Rove, Wolfowitz, Pearle, Cheney among them - believe that it's their right to throw the constitution out the window in the service of their own ideology, right? Seeing these ridiculous defenses of Palin on here just help make this clear - Many conservatives do not like American Democracy and basic democratic principles. Unlike you guys, though, I would never say "America, love it or leave it." You're welcome to stay, but you've got to obey the constitution and the laws. And Sarah Palin did not do that, according to this report.

Not exactly correct. The original "troopergate" investigation was a legislative committee investigation sought by the whole Alaskan legislature. When the McCain campaign butted in they made a claim that the accusations should be heard by a state personnel board and so there was a second "investigation" by that board composed of three members, all appointed by Palin.

The legislative committee subpoenaed Todd and the governor's aides and it was those subpoenas that were disregarded. Todd Palin and the aides agreed to "testify" before the personnel board but I don't beieve it was under oath.
To the best of my knowledge the personnel board has not released their findings.-

Palin originally said she would fully cooperate with the legislature's investigation, then refused after being tapped for VP. Tod did, however, testify in a sworn statement to the legislative committee. The Alaska Supreme Court has headr arguments this past week on whether the legislature's subponeas can be enforced, but has yet to issue its ruling.
Claiming that her own appointed personnel board is the only proper body to review her actions is like expecting a team of Mafia lawyers to decide on Al Capone's innocence.

You are mistaken about what she said--- she said she would cooperate with the Personnel Board and not the investigation that just released this report. As stated in Alaska law the Personnel board is who should have been investigating this from the very beginning and now this other investigation has now turned this over to the Personnel board since they are not able to charge her with anything.

One problem, the Alaska supreme court said that the legislative inquiry was appropriate as legislative oversight of the executive branch. And yes she will probably cooperate with the personnel board as she appointed all three members.

I would be a hypocrite if I said I was not glad this report shed some light on McCain's trophy Bimbo. She was a joke from jump street. McSame picked a nobody that knows nothing, and is a power freak. I wonder how long it will take for the killing of hundereds of thousands to begin in Iraq after we pull out or how soon Iran tries to wipe out Israel. No one's cause is helped with all the name-calling -- bimbo, terrorist, moron, over-the-hill, socialist, etc. If these are the people chosen to run for President in the primary process, the deserve a certain amount of respect, as do their choices for VP. This is the most hate-filled campaign in anyone's memory. The current party in power has introduced socialism for the upper class. Socialism for the lower end of our socio-economic system already exists. The middle class still pays the way for these other two groups. "Houston, we have a problem..." Democracy only works when a country has an educated, responsible, economically viable middle class. Support the party that supports that.

I blame cons. We let Bush have the Presidency. He lied and mumbled about being a uniter and not a divider and cons re-elected him after he drove us into massive debt. When his wartime tax cuts and Cheney's secret meetings led to the bankruptcy of the world's economy, instead of taking responsibility for their lack of judgement in voting for Bush not once but twice, they turned around (as cons always do) and try to pin the blame on Democrats. I don't understand why cons are bitter and angry-- they had a royal flush and squandered the chance to do good and flushed people's life savings down the toilet along with BILLIONS of war funding and tax cuts.

Im an independant.I was going with Clinton but the dems threw her under the bus.I like Obama but im not voting for him.When it takes the entire media,newspapers,hollywood,pop stars,the internet,scewed polls just to get this guy in the whitehouse i sense somethings wrong.Like this Palin thing is gonna sway anybodies undecided vote.This reminds me of Bill and Monica and the inpeachment.I watched that proceding daily and i couldnt understand how these sleezeballs in Washington wanted to hang this guy for lying.But apparently the dems have there own bunch of sleezeballs trying to make a point of nothing.

Actually it should be the investigative commission that should be found guilty of abuse, the reason being is that they used public funds to pursue a personal vendetta. According to Alaska law, an Ethical Violation is one that is used to pursue financial issues which, by any sense of the case, was not. Palin did not break any laws, she had every right as governor to fire Monegan and therefore there was no abuse. According to the report it is only an opinion and there is no penalty whatsoever. In fact, the matter should have been, and probably will be, investigated by the Personnel Board and Palin has already indicated that she and her husband will cooperate fully with that board's investigation.

What you fail to understand is that just because Republicans ruined our country in virtually every aspect imaginable, all Obama and Democrats have to do to regain the public's trust is address two or three of the major things that Bush destroyed or failed miserably at managing. The economy is crashing and no one with a brain (which essentially rules out most Bush voters) thinks it can be repaired overnight.

If I were Obama, I would make sure this mortgage crisis is straightened out, try to get gas prices back down (winding things down in Iraq would help with that) and insure the 45 million plus Americans (including 10 million children) who are uninsured and underinsured. Americans may have trouble finding work for a while but they won't have to worry that extortionist gas prices will continue to suck up all of their earnings and savings. They also won't have worry about their children getting sick or losing the roof over their heads. Obama will be just fine. Have faith. ;-)

Ido not care how much power a person has they have right to abuse it for any reason. I know sisters are going to stand together, but, do you ever think of what Sarhas sister deep in her heart feels about this. It is possible that she could still love him and maybe they have talked about going back together as husband and wife, if's that's so Palin has messed that up. There is one thing that you don't do and that is never use your power for anything other then what it is for. We none know how Palins sister is really feeling about what her sister and her husband did, it was wrong never ever take what power you may have and drity it up by doing things to hurt someone trying to get a man fired from his job-no!I cant see that, your messing with peoples lifes and feelings. What wen on in Sarhas sistre life between her and her husband was no concern of hers. Do you think that she would allow someone even her own sister to jump in where she had no right to. Your right about a marriage, things sometimes workout. But we are talking about threats to a family and a gov. and nothing done to stop them. What is the next step? Death? To many people have filed restraining orders through the court and have been found dead - this man was drunk on the job - He admitted to this on national Radio, Taserd his own 10 year old son - This is still a small boy!!! and made additional threats to other members of the family. He hunted without a hunting lisence. He has admitted to doing these things. they were not made up. Yet he is not under investigation. Maybe you would like to be stopped by this trooper?

Ethics and morals....Maybe I'm from another planet or something, but I beleive if we'd have had leadership with "ethics and morals" our country would not be in the crisis it is in at this moment in time. A total failure of ethics, morals and leadership have gotten us in this mess. Little Miss Glass House wants to throw stones and yet can't withstand stones thrown back. Fragmented, at best is her attempt at leadership, exactly what this country DOES NOT NEED right now. Someone said earlier, we're all taking the election too seriously, duh!!! This is the absolute most important election in our young history, as far as I am concerned. Never have we yearned for ethics and morality in our leaders as we do right now. This administration has failed the American people miserably and yet folks still seem to not want to see it or beleive it, let alone take the time to understand it. Failure to understand the illegalities of this administration will lead to future failures in leadership. Senator Obama understands what has happened here. All the BS in regards to Ayers and the like is so pathetically sad,it's laughable. It all goes back to ethics and morality, we can't or fail to understand the real issues so we'll try to win by libelous means. I beleive McCain is growing weary of the recent turn of ugliness in his party and attempted, however meagerly to dissuade his supporters from personal attacks. Too little, too late, I'm afraid, way too little, way too late. Sarah Palin will go back to Alaska to "govern" and they can have her, they're welcome to her, Americans as a collective whole DO NOT WANT HER!!! My sister works for a large computer and communications firm and they are under contract to secure Sarah Palins personal data and lock it down. Palin's E-mail was hacked so there was a security breach but it still sounds a little fishy to me. I am guessing she has a few more skeletons in her closet. Of course she's married to a sessesionist. Sarah Palin must hate America.
