I love that he has created such a cutlure of mud slinging and lies around his campaign that he now can't stop people's hatred and ignorance from getting out of control.

I gained much respect for McCain when he defended Obama's character and integrity by confronting the stupidity of his followers. Unfortuantely for him his supporters just don't get it. There was a time when the republican party stood for high standards and classy character. They have evolved into a party of Joe Sixpacks, Hockey mom's and easily swayed people. That's what happens when you mix the wealthy elite with working class folks. A dumbed down Republican party that can't even support its own leader.

I'm sorry, but he's started the mud slinging and questioning Obama's character. Have you seen his ads? They are still running, by the way. Have you heard him asking who the real Obama is? Have you heard Palin claiming that Obama palled around with terrorists?
I see this as just one of his many flip-flops. He just got scared when he saw what kinds of forces he'd unleashed.-

He's also worried because many of his backers are saying he's letting things get out of control and he's losing support of even his own people. Its politically expediant to try and cool things slightly. Now if he can rein in Sarah and Cindy there might be some progress,

I used to respect and like McCain. He really was a decent politician and faced up to many of the excesses of the right.

Unfortunately, unlike you, I have lost most of that respect in his dirty campaign. He and Palin have stirred up all that is bad, angry, and racist in his followers. Instead of inspiring them to rise up to better themselves and the country, he has led them into an ugly and even frightening outburst of mob behavior.
If he were truly a leader, he would never have gone down this path at all. His behavior has been erratic, desperate, unpredictable, and ugly. That he tried to calm the crowd down shows his residual decency. But he has let his ambition, bad temper, and lust for power overshadow the old goodness.
Obama, by contrast, has remained cool and in control of his emotions and the character of his campaign. True he has retaliated with some misleading ads of his own, but he did not initiate the mud-slinging ads.

A new Civil War is about to erupt. It won’t be the north versus the south, the blue versus the grey, but the blue states versus the red states. It will be a battle between intellect and dogma.
Were it only to be a battle of wits, we could feel safe of the outcome. It is a well known fact that in a battle of wits, the red staters are seriously out gunned. However, in the real world, it’s the red staters, that have the guns and pack the firepower.
My advice to the blue staters and anyone else capable of rational thought is to remember not to bring a sharp tongue to a gun fight. Take a page from the right and apply the “Bush Doctrine”. It’s time to consider getting them, before they get you.-

I think that's a little over the top yet. Only a few people are going that far. I'm willing to respectfully disagree with my friends who are right of center. We are all Americans and we mostly want the same thing even if we disagree on how to get there. I would defend myself if necessary, but I think most of the opposition is sane enough to not want to go there.

I guess I should ask whose dogma and whose intellect. Both "liberals" (whatever they are) and "conservatives" (whatever they are) have both. One always likes to have intellect used. But one of the major objectives of all political parties is to get one to abandon intellect and respond in lockstep to key phrases.
A little story-- I was born, raised, and got my undergrad degree in PA. Decided to move out to rural MO for my first job. At the time (1969) there was a whole lot of news back East about extremist militia in MO, to the extent that I was a little leery about coming. Got out here and --guess what!-- nobody ever heard of these groups. The worst thing that ever happened was some guy being a little miffed because I was a Yankee. There are loons everywhere; and one of the efforts of a political party is to paint the wildly abnormal as the normal case.-

I am familiar with MO . Rural Mo is the childhood home of Rush Limbaugh, home of John Aschcroft and the Confederate flag is commonly used for window curtains. There still are old time hillbillies who live in the woods without plumbing but have a large assortment of rifles. Have you ever visited Branson? The Dolly Parton Show is all about the north and south Confederate Days. Missouri liberals live in and around the big cities and universities. Few blacks will venture into rural MO

It is becoming increasingly clear from McCain's erratic, lurching behavior that he cannot see ANYTHING except in hindsight. In these uncertain times, we need a leader with forward-looking vision, not one constantly changing course when he realizes he's veered off course into the ditch yet again. -

The dogmatic use conviction and faith to try and prove their points, the intellect questioning and fact. I used to be amazed by the number of people I met who spoke with strong conviction about topics they knew nothing about. Now I realize its just plain ignorance.

I'll give McCain credit for not supporting the worst of his followers. Don't condemn your opponents when they do something right. Maybe he is seeing that he's made some mistakes in his rhetoric. I'll reserve judgment until he says something different.

This is sad. When we have politicians dividing the country for the sake of their own gain we are taking a step backwards not forward. We cannot claim the title as the "leader of the free world" when the people who claim to have honor, respect, integrity, and spirtuality, compromise those virtues at any cost. To honestly believe that our government would let a black man who has radical ties to terrorist run for president of the United States is an afront to our constitution, and common sense. To see this type of hate in a democracy is sad. As a white man who is a republican I am ashamed by this behavior, but I also understand that conciously or sub-conciously, some whites are having a hard time accepting that the face of America could be black. It's like the torch is being passed and some, including my friends, believe that whites will lose their rightful position in our society. If Obama is elected president, it will put a stamp on our constitution and send a signal throughout our nation and the rest of the world that all men are created equal. Remember, the needs of many, are far greater than the needs of the few; or the one. May God bless us all.
