"It is hard to think of any presidential candidate before Barack Obama sporting associations with three more execrable characters. Yet let the McCain campaign raise the issue, and the mainstream media begin fulminating about dirty campaigning tinged with racism and McCarthyite guilt by association.

But associations are important. They provide a significant insight into character. They are particularly relevant in relation to a potential president as new, unknown, opaque and self-contained as Mr. Obama."-

I agree that these are legitimate issues for American voters to consider in deciding whether to vote for Obama in the election. This article provided a thoughtful analysis of these shady associations of Obama and why the are relevant. Also on how McCain inadvertently hurt himself by waiting until October to raise these legitimate concerns. He needs the help of as many people as possible now to bring these important facts to the attention of the public, since it is obvious that the big mainstream media outlets have no interest in doing so because they vigorously are backing Obama.

Wright is far more of an american patriot that Palin and her goofy preachers. Here is what Ronald Reagan's Asst. Secy. of Defense says about Wright.
Reply
Rev. Jeremiah Wright, a True Patriot
By LAWRENCE KORB and IAN MOSS
In 1961, a young African-American man, after hearing President John F. Kennedy's challenge to, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country," gave up his student deferment, left college in Virginia and voluntarily joined the Marines. In 1963, this man, having completed his two years of service in the Marines, volunteered again to become a Navy corpsman. (They provide medical assistance to the Marines as well as to Navy personnel.)
The man did so well in corpsman school that he was the valedictorian and became a cardiopulmonary technician. Not surprisingly, he was assigned to the Navy's premier medical facility, Bethesda Naval Hospital, as a member of the commander in chief's medical team, and helped care for President Lyndon B. Johnson after his 1966 surgery. For his service on the team, which he left in 1967, the White House awarded him three letters of commendation. What is even more remarkable is that this man entered the Marines and Navy not many years after the two branches began to become integrated.
While this young man was serving six years on active duty, Vice President Dick Cheney, who was born the same year as the Marine/sailor, received five deferments, four for being an undergraduate and graduate student and one for being a prospective father. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both five years younger than the African-American youth, used their student deferments to stay in college until 1968. Both then avoided going on active duty through family connections.
Who is the real patriot? The young man who interrupted his studies to serve his country for six years or our three political leaders who beat the system? Are the patriots the people who actually sacrifice something or those who merely talk about their love of the country?..
... How many of Wright's detractors, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly to name but a few, volunteered for service, and did so under the often tumultuous circumstances of a newly integrated armed forces and a society in the midst of a civil rights struggle? Not many. While words do count, so do actions. Let us not forget that, for whatever Rev. Wright may have said over the last 30 years, he has demonstrated his patriotism.
(Lawrence Korb and Ian Moss are, respectively, Navy and Marine Corps veterans. Korb served as assistant secretary of Defense in the Reagan administration.)-

Palin's preacher: Jews control the economy, that's causing all the corruption
Reply
A new video of Sarah Palin experiencing a laying of hands at her church in Wasilla shows Sarah Palin's preacher telling the congregation - with Palin present and about to join him on stage - how Christians need to take over control of the business world, especially banking, just like the Jews (Israelites) have done. He then goes on to say that the fact that non-Christians are running the banking industry is the cause of all of the recent scandals.

Tim McVeigh served in the military. Does that make him a good guy?
Reply
Does that negate the fact that he is a murder and terrorist?
Wright may have served his country well in the 1960s.
Wright may actually have good intentions and aspirations for our country.
But, we have all seen the videos. His expressed opinions are cause for great concern.
If Obama has occassionally attended Wright's church, I would not be concerned.
But, Obama sat at the foot of the man for 20 years, and heard these comments over and over again!
There is no way those comments could not have had an effect on Obama.
(Not to mention his wife's comments about finally being proud of America!?)
There is no way that a white politician could have such an long-lasting association with a hate-mongering preacher like Wright and it not be cause for concern.
(Wright's past service does NOT change what we saw on those videos!)
Hyper - you and the other liberals, plus the media, are hypocrites.
Your desire to shove your stupid, PROVEN-TO-FAIL agenda down our throats at any cost is simply brazen.-

"Why are these associations important? Do I think Mr. Obama is as corrupt as Mr. Rezko? Or shares Mr. Wright's angry racism or Mr. Ayers' unreconstructed 1960s radicalism?
Reply
No. But that does not make these associations irrelevant. They tell us two important things about Mr. Obama.
First, his cynicism and ruthlessness. He found these men useful and use them he did. Would you attend a church whose pastor was spreading racial animosity from the pulpit? Would you even shake hands with – let alone serve on two boards with – an unrepentant terrorist?
Mr. Obama did, if not out of conviction then out of expediency. He was a young man on the make, an unknown outsider working his way into Chicago politics. He played the game with everyone, without qualms and with obvious success."-

I personally think that he is a pawn. The Chicago powers that be, saw a nice young half black, half white man who could appeal to all voters. He has a great smile, and talked well. The felt they could train him to speak in public and pull in votes. Chicago was a trial run. Obama caught the eye of Soros and others, and he was on his way. I hope that he survives the stress that these people have put him under. Not only does he have the election to worry about, but also he has to please his handlers.-

then Obama hasn't written anything that is a best seller.
So long as there is no sane promoting of John McCain, but only dreary trashing of Barack Hussein Obama, - he will win.

In the end, Barack won because you believed in the power of lies, more than you believed in truth.
If the Wolfs and Nixies and Alphas of American politics, had dared to promote John McCain with half the enraged energy they spent trashing Obama, - you might have actualy achieved something.
Even in loss, you would have said things worth saying, scored points and swayed a nation towards your beliefs.

And so the nation got two best-sellers; about Obama,

GOP's ACORN 'Voter Fraud' Lie Ramped Up
I had been intending to post an answer to the ongoing -- and quickly escalating -- ACORN smears being issued of late by the GOP enemies of democracy out there, who have decided to intensify their unsubstantiated assaults on the community organization, given its effectiveness at registering millions of low-income voters across the country....
... Doubtless you've heard the smears by now: that ACORN is committing "voter fraud", on behalf of Obama, in hotly contested swing states. The media has been all too happy to pass that garbage on, without bothering to note that, in fact, the organization attempts to authenticate every registration form their workers submit and by law they must turn in every form to election officials -- even if they find a registration to be fraudulent when they call the phone number submitted on the form, or if the forms are otherwise suspect or incomplete.
They do so, and they flag all questionable registration forms as being suspect before turning them in to officials.
The thanks they receive for registering millions of new voters that nobody else has bothered with, and for notifying officials about questionable registration forms when they turn them in, is that the GOP's democracy-hating propagandists and election officials run to the media shouting, "ACORN is committing voter fraud! They've turned in hundreds and thousands of fraudulent registration forms!"
Of course they have. They have to by law. But what those GOP despots of democracy always forget to mention is that it was ACORN themselves who notified officials about the potentially fraudulent and/or incomplete forms in the first place!
For the quickest idea of how the GOP ACORN scam has run amok, dutifully forwarded by the often clueless corporate media, and then the rightwing wankers in the blogosphere who are only to happy to help enable those who are lying to them -- by putting truth, democracy and country second -- take a look at the following game of rightwing "blogosphere telephone" concerning a recent news conference called by a Lake County, Indiana GOP chair in order to sound the phony alarm about "fraud" committed by ACORN....

OK, Elef, fair enough. So what part of Obama's rhetoric should we listen to?
Reply
Obama ran as a liberal in the primary. Now he is running as a centrist. He sounds more conservative than Hillary ever did!
He claims he will help our businesses be competitive in the global market? What has he done in his brief stint as senator to help there?
What has he done to help with health care?
He criticizes the Iraq War (which shows considerable progress, even some hope) yet he wants to escalate the Afghanistan War, which is less winnable than Iraq (just ask the Soviets!)
Obama has a lot of nice sounding rhetoric. (Actually, he is just telling the stupid peons what they want to hear.) But, where is the evidence he can deliver, or will even TRY to deliver? As far as I can tell, his speeches are nothing but promises that he has no intention, or means, of keeping!
Bear in mind. Some of what I just wrote applies to McCain. But, with McCain, we have much more history to rely on.

To take a complex situation and present it as a simple 'my way or death', - is good standard politics and I would approve, if only I had sold my soul in 2000 when it was a sellers market.
But what if someone says, 'better a working capitalist system than a broken capitalist system?'
- on the grounds that what we have now is not capitalism, but failure;
and what is needed, is to restore the promise of America as the country where working hard is the way to succeed?
Don't answer that; we both know the answer and you don't need to embarrass yourself.
Let's fix our system; make it capitalistic again; let's not become a nation of wallmart temp slaves working for global conglomerates run by an in-bred group of fools who could not pee in a boot if the instructions were written on the heel.

Obama will create 20 Promise Neighborhoods in areas that have high levels of poverty and crime and low levels of student academic achievement in cities across the nation.
The Promise Neighborhoods will be modeled after the Harlem Children's Zone, which provides a full network of services, including early childhood education, youth violence prevention efforts and after-school activities, to an entire neighborhood from birth to college.
Obama proposes to achieve almost universal service for the nation’s 17 million college students by offering a refundable annual tax credit of $4,000 toward college tuition. This program should cost about $65-100 billion a year, perhaps more if it substantially increases the number of students attending college.
In return for the credit, college students will be required to perform 100 hours of community service every year for four years. By offering college students a hefty $40 an hour, Mr. Obama will ensure that nearly every college student will participate in his program, without actually making their service mandatory.
Obama said that he would spend $210 billion to create jobs in construction and environmental industries.

Your contention that Bill Ayres is unrepentant is incorrect. He has stated on more than one occasion that he regrets any harm he caused to individuals. He apologized to the one person that was injured in an attack he took part in. He has not been involved with illegal activity in several decades.

It is nice that republicans are so much more forgiving of people on their side that committed crimes decades ago.-

When you knowingly put a white collar criminal like Dumya in the White House you have no scruples!
That "liberal media" wasn't allowed in 2000 or 2004 to point out how Dumya sold his Harken stock while he was on the Board of Harken that had already published a memo not to sell because of insider info... but, Dumya was investigated by his dad's buddies working for former Sec of State Baker...and exonerated... so many repug coverups and deceptions... to make the rich richer and throw out the New Deal, or any effort to at least help workers survive in America!-

Another good example of Shrubs republican 'scruples' is how he and his buddies used imminent domain to take land away from people who didn't want to sell, then used taxpayer money to build a stadium on it, then sold it and kept the money. He screwed the property owners than the taxpayers and then later got elected to office by scruples loving right wingers.

yah, they will get to keep that 147 acres for forever too! They were only willing to pay half what the land was worth... one family that held out did win a legal suit and got an award of 8 million though! Why dumya wants to limit those tort cases from correcting such vices!
Reply
Worse case of hypocrisy is not allowing our soldiers to sue Iraq who were tortured under Sadam.... but allowing foreign companies to sue successfully for reparations! Corporations with more rights than Americans and only one supreme court judge away from making it really legal, like throwing out habeas corpus and making the Unitary Executive the law of the land. Repugs have almost destroyed America and the Constitution!

Bill Ayers -

Of course, he elided the fact that they have no remorse for their actions and Ayers publicly wished there had been more of them. Ayers escaped prosecution on procedural grounds. In the words of Ayers, "Guilty as hell, free as a bird -- America is a great country".
Possibly relying on connections that Ayers' wealthy father had in Chicago, Ayers and Dohrn were able to land sinecures in academia.

Carter had higher economic growth, higher wage growth and less unemployment than Reagan. Yes we had inflation, largely caused by Nixon running his part of Vietnam on borrowed money and an oil shock. We may see this again since bushie has run a war on borrowed money (even more costly than Vietnam), has produced a major corruption scandal that the taxpayer again has to bail out and we again have an oil shock.
Reagan produced a major market crash and a major corruption scandal that american taxpayers had to bail out - Carter did not.
Reagan raised taxes on average americans twice - only the super rich saw lower taxes. 40% of Americans lost their savings and became net debtors under Reagan. The transfer of wealth from average americans to the super rich that Reagan started now is costing us dearly.
Reagan's "star wars" was totally unnecessary and mainly disguised payoffs to corrupt buddies in the "defence" industries. From Warsaw pact documents, we now know that the USSR abandoned the arms race in the late 1960s (hence so many treaties from the early 1970s) and that "star wars" was mainly foisted on america by the "iron triangle".
Then there are the 300,000 christians that Reagan killed in central america in consort with our fundies and the help of death squads, drug dealers, international arms dealers, ....
Carter looks great by comparison. -

McCain Proud of Connections to War Criminal Kissinger
Reply
McCain's "terrorist" connections are far worse than Obama's links to Ayers. In the 1980s, McCain personally funded a guerrilla group (the Contras) that engaged in terrorist acts. Just last year, McCain expressed how "proud" he was of an ex-felon who urged shooting law enforcement agents in the head (G. Gordon Liddy). And earlier this year, the McCain campaign trumpeted the endorsement of a man who illegally provided weapons and money to terrorists; when a reporter questioned this, the McCain campaign refused to even criticize this criminal (Oliver North).
In February 1988, the Washington" target="_blank">click here Post reported that McCain personally (and "recently") gave the Contras $400.
No one can doubt that acts of terror were committed by the Contras. Human" target="_blank">click here Rights Watch concluded in 1989, "the contras were major and systematic violators of the most basic standards of the laws of armed conflict, including by launching indiscriminate attacks on civilians, selectively murdering non-combatants, and mistreating prisoners." Human Rights Watch also criticized acts of terror by the Sandinista government, but called the Contras "a force that has shown itself incapable of operating without consistently committing gross abuses in violation of the laws of war." -

WASHINGTON — John McCain's campaign is criticizing Barack Obama for his ties to a former radical who engaged in violent acts four decades ago, but McCain himself was closely connected to a private group that supplied aid to rebels trying to overthrow the leftist government of Nicaragua during the Iran-Contra affair.
Reply
The U.S. Council for World Freedom was part of an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. The group was dedicated to stamping out communism around the globe.
The council's founder, retired Army Maj. Gen. John Singlaub, said McCain became associated with the organization in the early 1980s as McCain was launching his political career in Arizona. Singlaub said McCain was a supporter but not an active member in the group.
"McCain was a new guy on the block learning the ropes," Singlaub told The Associated Press in an interview. "I think I met him in the Washington area when he was just a new congressman. We had McCain on the board to make him feel like he wasn't left out. It looks good to have names on a letterhead who are well-known and appreciated.
"I don't recall talking to McCain at all on the work of the group," Singlaub said.
The renewed attention over McCain's association with Singlaub's group comes as McCain's Republican presidential campaign steps up criticism over Obama's dealings with William Ayers, a college professor who co-founded the Weather Underground and years later worked on education reform in Chicago alongside Obama. Ayers held a meet-the-candidate event at his home when Obama first ran for public office in the mid-1990s.
Obama was roughly 8 years old when Ayers, now at the University of Illinois at Chicago, was working with the Weather Underground, which took responsibility for bombings that included nonfatal blasts at the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol. McCain's vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, has said that Obama "pals around with terrorists."
In McCain's case, Singlaub knew McCain's father, a Navy admiral who had sought Singlaub's counsel when McCain became a prisoner of war and spent 5 1/2 years in North Vietnamese hands.
"John's father asked me for advice about what he ought to do now that his son had been shot down and captured," Singlaub recalled in one of two recent interviews. "I said, 'As long as you don't give any impression that you care more about him than you care about any of the other prisoners, he won't be treated any differently.'"
In the Iran-Contra affair, the Reagan White House arranged covert arms shipments to the Contra rebels financed in part by secret arms sales to Iran.
Iran-Contra proved to be the undoing of Singlaub's council.
In 1987, the Internal Revenue Service withdrew the tax-exempt status of Singlaub's group because of its activities on behalf of the Contras. -

Elected to the House in 1982 and at a time when he was on the board of Singlaub's council, McCain was among Republicans on Capitol Hill expressing support for the Contras, a CIA-organized guerrilla force in Central America. In 1984, Congress cut off CIA funds for the Contras.
Reply
Months before the cutoff, top Reagan administration officials ramped up the secret White House-directed supply network and put National Security Council aide Oliver North in charge of running it. The goal was to keep the Contras operational until Congress could be persuaded to resume CIA funding.
Singlaub's private group became the public cover for the White House operation.
Secretly, Singlaub worked with North in an effort to raise millions of dollars from foreign governments.
McCain has said previously he resigned from the council in 1984 and asked in 1986 to have his name removed from the group's letterhead.
"I didn't know whether (the group's activity) was legal or illegal, but I didn't think I wanted to be associated with them," McCain said in a newspaper interview in 1986.
Singlaub does not recall any McCain resignation in 1984 or May 1986, nor does Joyce Downey, who oversaw the group's day-to-day activities.
"That's a surprise to me," Singlaub said. "This is the first time I've ever heard that. There may have been someone in his office communicating with our office."
"I don't ever remember hearing about his resigning, but I really wasn't worried about that part of our activities, a housekeeping thing," Singlaub said. "If he didn't want to be on the board that's OK. It wasn't as if he had been active participant and we were going to miss his help. He had no active interest. He certainly supported us." -

In light of St. John McCain's claim to moral superiority over Barack Obama on the issue of campaign finance, it's worth taking another look at the case of the Vets for Freedom PAC, the organization behind a swiftboat style attack on Barack Obama.
Reply
The notable thing about Vets for Freedom is that the messages in their ad are the exact same messages being used by John McCain himself -- and his campaign is closely tied with the organization. It's illegal for a campaign to coordinate message activity with a PAC, yet there's been virtually no coverage of the story. -

McCain's Mob Connections
Reply
First thing, three points about McCain's mob connections:
1. His father-in-law (Jim Hensley) was not only "mobbed-up" but an organized crime felon.
2. McCain's first Congressional run was bankrolled by Jim Hensley's mob proceeds.
3. Jim Henley's boss and long-time associate Phoenix millionaire, Kemper Marley, ran Arizona's illegal bookie(illegal betting) service, Transamerica Wire Service, for the Chicago Cosa Nostra which was the same wire service started by the Al Capone mop earlier.
The fact is during his rise to his Senate seat in Arizona, McCain became friends with and was sponsored by some of Arizona's most powerful and corrupt men.
McCain was a personal friend of Arizona Governor Fife Symington, convicted in 1996 of multiple counts of fraud and extortion and forced to resign as cover. Charles Keating, convicted of bank fraud, and Kemper Marley bookmaker for organized crime.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Hensley
Also, as early as 1940s both Hensley and Marley made millions employing illegal immigrants in their various industries as did many other wealthy Arizonans, which of course explains McCain's dogged determination to pass his Amnesty bill.
Finally, Kemper Marley was implicated in the death of Arizona Republic investigative reporter Don Bolles death. Bolles' news stories had prevented Marley from being appointed a commission on the state racing board, and so, according to the hitman who turned state's evidence, Marley ordered his death.
All this and we know for a fact McCain sent a telegram wishing Arizona Mafia Don Joe Bonanno a happy birthday sometime before Bonanno's death.
The point in all of this is not necessarily that McCain is a front man for organized crime, but that he has received money from organized crime and been beholden to felons like Jim Hensley, Kemper Marley, Charles Keating all of his political career. -

McCain’s Scandalous Friends
Reply
McCain is also closely connected to a 1970’s criminal of his own, except in McCain’s case the criminal served prison time for his involvement in the Watergate scandal and the burglary on Daniel Ellsberg, the man who leaked the Pentagon Papers revealing to the American people the truth about the Vietnam War. McCain’s criminal associate is G.Gordon Liddy, but McCain doesn’t just know of the man, he has accepted campaign contributions from him and even appeared on his radio show, where he described Liddy as an “old friend” and praised Liddy for his “adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.”
In addition to breaking into the offices at Watergate and of Ellsberg, Media Matters notes that Liddy acknowledged he was prepared to kill people during the burglary “if necessary.” He also admits “plotting to murder journalist Jack Anderson; plotting with a ‘gangland figure’ to murder Howard Hunt to stop him from cooperating with investigators; plotting to firebomb the Brookings Institution; and plotting to kidnap ‘leftist guerillas’ at the 1972 Republican National Convention — a plan he outlined to the Nixon administration using terminology borrowed from the Nazis.”
More recently, “In 1994, after the disastrous federal raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, he [Liddy] gave some advice to his listeners: ‘Now if the [US] Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you and they are bearing arms, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot; they’re going to be wearing bulletproof vests. … Kill the sons of bitches.’”
McCain’s campaign told the Charlotte Observer in 2000 that “Liddy’s character will appeal to many voters because he was following orders from President Nixon and kept silent afterward,” in connection with a planned speaking engagement at a McCain fundraiser. While Ayers can describe his disastrous attempts at activism through violence as a mistake made in his youth as a reaction to the violence in Vietnam, Liddy can’t. Liddy betrayed the nation as an experienced adult, and continued his terrorist threats–commonly expressed by many right leaning talk show hosts–into the present. McCain’s unabashed support for Liddy is also a stark contrast to Obama’s repudiation of Ayers’ behavior thirty years ago.-

Amazing how psychologists have found right wingers/evangelicals to be the greatest equivocators in America and the most uninformed. (only 35% right, lowest in the PIPA Study).. like Dumya and Palin's total lack of inquisitiveness. Also the book, Conservatives Without Conscience, uses psych profiles developed after WW2 to validate that today's right wingers/evangelicals would have also supported Hitler! The ignorant, negative, crude, un-American comments made about Obama at McBush/Palin rallies validate the truth of this all... as do the supporters of this trashy article!
