I like the electoral college, it just needs a tweak. Perhaps doing it like Nebraska and Maine allocate the votes; by congressional district with the winner of the popular vote picking up an extra two. Otherwise I fear all the advertising would go to attempting to pick up cities and completely ignore areas with a low population density.

  I would argue that parity in the Senate already protects those areas with lower population density against the metropolitan hordes. But hey, I'm speaking as a city boy :).
