Comments for McCain and Palin Are Playing With Fire »

Khaled Hosseini: I prefer to discuss politics through my novels, but I am truly dismayed these days. Twice last week alone, speakers at McCain-Palin rallies have referred to Sen. Barack Obama , with unveiled scorn, as Barack Hussein Obama.

Liz Trotta said she would like to see Obama killed on faux noise and the host laughed. Since then two Democrats have been gunned down. Now that call is being heard at republicon rallies. McCain has to ride the tiger of hatred now and hope it doesn't eat him. Who else is going to die?

Hussein means "good, small, and handsome". OMG! Barak's parents looked at him and saw their baby as "good, small and handsome." What shall we do? Quick! Take to the streets and protest such outlandish behavior by parents!
I think Barak Hussein Obama is a good man. He has my vote. I can't abide John Sydney McCain. He doesn't.

Vote as your conscience and judgement dictate. Like the author of this article, I could care less what Sen. Obama's middle name is; if one isn't going to vote for him (I'm not), there are other, more rational reasons.

Even tough you seem to lean towards the "other candidate", at least you do say that his middle name does not matter.
You also say there are other, more "rational" reasons to vote for the "other guy".
Indeed, I do admit there are some rational reasons in favor for Mc Cain, even if I don't always agree with those reasons myself, and do find more rational reasons to favor Obama and against Mc Cain.
But that's democracy, free speech, freedom of tought, .......... and (contrary to what some seem to say)... that's what America (US) is (or should be) all about.

I do hope and trust, "Chevydog", you were sincere in your comment, and that your reasons are indeed "rational", so, even tough I don't agree with you on your choice, I did gave you a positive rating.

I think this author is inciting more trouble than a few extremists at rallies on both sides. Who cares what Obama's middle name is or if anyone uses it?

I've seen enough ugliness on propeller from both rabid McCain and Obama supporters that this is just more of that--but in WaPo, which statistically supports more "left" than "right" issues and opinions

And there are different schools of thought about people behaving badly. Many argue that ignoring it is more powerful than calling attention to it. Even if it's ignored as not worth a response, the press turns it into a big deal.

          Remember Rev. Wright?

"Is inaction tantamount to consent? The McCain campaign certainly thinks so when it comes to Obama and incendiary remarks from the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. By their own inaction, then, are McCain and Palin condoning these slurs? Or worse, are they willfully inciting the angry and venomous response that we have been witnessing at their rallies? If not, then what reaction are they hoping to evoke by their relentless public suggestions that Obama is basically an anti-American liar who won't put "country first" and has an affection for terrorists? Do they not understand the kind of fire they are playing with?"

I certainly call it that. Reverand Wright is correct.

Strangers at a rally are a lot different than someone you choose to sit in a pew and absorb ideas from for many years. Obama has supported anti-American views--he hasn't explained how he can support U.N. positions that undercut the U.S. Constitution (see the Millenium Declaration), and he did not support the Constitutional perspective in DC v. Heller, as examples (and he still intends to support infringments).

Again, I think this writer is more likely to incite something negative by writing this--and WaPo by printing it.

              To Jordon11,

Hussein is his middle name, and he should be called by his name correct? My problem is not with his name, but his associations, check them out and be very careful.

I checked Obama out the moment he announced his candidacy. And I've followed all the accusations since then. Obama is fine. He's a patriotic American, and has conducted his life with a concern for others. I'm not worried that he knows Ayers. Why would I? Ayers grew up, educated himself, and has shown no actions that would discredit him now. Obama was a little boy when Ayers was militant over Viet Nam. I hardly think an eight year old boy was being influenced by Ayers. If Obama has participated in wrong doing, do let me know. Until then, I'm certainly not going to hold him responsible for the actions of people he happens to know. I could make the same connections you do with Obama, to McCain. I don't vote out of fear. I look at the facts, not the unsubstantiated accusations.

                  Viclaw,

You are absolutely correct. Hussain is his middle name. Not a made up term, like all of the lame ones that the liberals have been making up for McCain. That is however neither here nor there, no point in discussing the useless liberal diatribes that are all over this board..

Your statement is too simple and sensible for it to be taken seriously by normal people apparently..

His associations, his lack of a record of any kind (positive or negative) and a ton of other issues are valid reasons for not voting for him.

The only reason that he is as popular as he is is simple.. Plenty of people view this as their opportunity to vote in what they think will b their contribution to a historic election by voting in someone black.. His skills, experience, judgement have nothing to do with his popularty..

The race card the democrats are playing is their last ditch effort to get their grasps around this election.. and the suckers are falling or it.. well, then I guess the collective masses deserve who will be voted in by us all... He won't have my vote, but apparently he doesn't need it cause there are plenty of other suckers in this country..

                    NotVulgarName,

I disagree that most people support him because he's black. I think major reasons to support him are they mostly either consider one of his platform issues their own pet issue or they see him as a Washington outsider.

He is very attractive and a good speaker. He's bright and committed to helping people. He obviously says what a lot of people want to hear.

I think it's counterproductive to call people suckers any more than for Obama supporters to call Palin a sl*t, as also has happened on propeller. It's very easy to stick with specific issues and make your case.

                      MeMeStryker,

you and I can disagree all we want, the truth is what we hear from people.. I have talked to more than just a couple of people who have no faith in this person to stand up for anything... They constantly talk about how they think he is a waffler and will bend and negotiate anything to HIS benefit.. However, they intend to vote for him because he is an opportunity to "CORRECT A WRONG".. Hang out in a beer and talk to the people who have just recently become able to vote since the last election.. In my experience in these conversations, the people have been passionate about whom they will vote for and it better be OBAMA that wins.. but then when asked for more detail, they don't speak anymore than his talking points from his rara speaches, and off course there is the well, he is the ATTRACTIVE, GOOD SPEAKER, not the OLD MAN..

Being ATTRACTIVE does not make a president.
Being OLD does not detract from being a president.

He says what a lot of people want to hear so he can use their votes to HIS benefit. And that is what qualifies people as suckers IMO..

I would say that anyone who still supports the Republicans after what they have done to this country in the last 8 years isn't playing with a full deck. Either that or they are a defense contractor.

It works both ways, ADAGUY. Of course, Carter won by a landslide, and people felt the same way about him as they do Obama. After the election, they were asking each other, "what have we done?!" I can't understand why anyone has strong love for either ticket. They all have demonstrated some very human flaws.

No, I'm not attacking her. The truth is, I don't care at all whether a child is born within wedlock or out of wedlock. To me a child is a child; it's that simple. I do not condemn Bristol at all; this is not her fault and she may turn out to be a wonderful mother, unlike her own mother who neglected to enlighten her about birth control. I feel sorry for her, as I do for all teenage mothers because they have no idea what they are up against.

I admit that my joke was a bit tasteless, but my sarcasm was directed at the member to whom I was responding. He/she was condemning black girls who are in the same predicament as Bristol. Did you find his/her comment despicable too?

Obama is not my candidate; I'm not voting in the election. I simply hate hypocrisy which both the member to whom I responded and Sarah Palin are showing in this matter.

I Dont know how we got into this position, it would seem that Obama would not be able to get security clearance for a government job due to his past and who he associated with. And we are about to elect him president?
What is this world coming to.

Obama is nothing but a crack head who hangs out with terrorist & criminals. His wife is no better she received a two hundred thousand dollar raise two days after Obama became a senator from a hospital that charges uninsured immigrates three times what it charges insured patients for the same care. Obama is nothing more than a wag the dog candidate.

Candida why aren't you voting? You seem very passionate in your support of BO. Are you ineligible for some reason (convicted felon, illegal, one of Acorn's registered dead people?)

I'm not an American citizen, and I'm passionate about the truth, not Obama.
