      If Obama was so "prescient" why did he not sign the letter that McCain did one year prior? No Democrat signed that letter.

        Because everyone knows McCain is an erratic individual who you join at your own peril.
        
        For instance ... in 1999, Johnny Shapeshifter was ADAMANT that Americans be able to invest their Social Security contributions into the Stock Market.
        
        Just think what a disaster THAT would have been.
        
        Of course, Johnny doesn't make a case for that anymore ... ... ... maybe next year ... ... ... after he forgets what happened this past month.
        
        You know ... he IS 72.

        Better go back and reread what was recommended
        
        Govt bonds and money market accts were options
        Why don't you look at what Daniel Patrick Moynihan said needed to be done to save Social Security
        Unfortunately no one in his party listened to him
        Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.) announced a plan to change Social Security for the better by cutting the payroll tax and letting Americans use the money for private retirement accounts—or for whatever else they want.

        I just love the way that liberals rewrite what McCain said and then call him shapeshifter. Liberals are always doing the modify what is said by taking comments out of context and modifying what is said to make it something different.

  The letter itself is dated March 22, 2007
  
  Now what was going on in Congress in 2007??
  Dodd chairman of the Senate banking committee
  Frank chairman of the House Financial Services Committee
  
  His party was in charge of Congress
  Why didn't he send the letter to Dodd and Frank and ask for hearings???
  Why didn't he write a bill to regulate Fannie and Freddie????
  His party was in charge
  Why did he continue taking campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie????

      As did the republicans that voted with the democrats.
      
      Ironically, the republicans were pushing for more regulation. Hard to determine anymore of when they want regulation and when they don't. Of course, there in nothing conservative about the republican party of today.

        If the majority were republicans, how could the democrats prevent it without some of the republicans joining in?
        
        Go to the bill and look up the vote count.
        
        It is just like the ballyhoo'd gramm-leach-bliley act that has been alleged that the republicans fought against in congress. All three of the bills namesake are republicans. The gramm-leach-bliley act added considerably to the free for all market that was enjoyed for many years while the market was booming.
        
        Opening up markets to allow more risky endeavors is part of the process of freedom, but with freedom comes risk. You need to ask whether you support regulation or deregulation. Each has its good and bad.

  Where is the copy of the letter that Obama allegedly wrote. McCains and others were there including signatures.
  
  Who did McCain write to? Majority leader.
  
  Who did Obama write a letter to? Those outside congress.
  
  Who makes the laws and regulations? Congress.
  
  Republicans tried to put the brakes on in 2003, 2005, and 2006.
  
  Obama wrote a letter in 2007.
  
  The housing price bubble was going up and peaking about 2006.
  
  Republicans were ahead of the curve and at the peak.
  
  Obama was after the bubble burst and too late. Look at the graph of housing prices.

    That's pretty funny. Are you suggesting that the party who had clear majority in both houses put on the brakes? Please provide some evidence. I'm going to assume that you can't because republicans did not support any effort to further regulate the financial market, especially during the boom period.
