It makes sense. Papa B. did the same thing after he lost to Clinton. He invaded Kuwait and left the slamassel to his victor. I wouldn't expect any less from Baby B.

And Off topic he(Pappa_Bush) did write this about invading and occupying Iraq:
We were disappointed that Saddam's defeat did not break his hold on power, as many of our Arab allies had predicted and we had come to expect. President Bush repeatedly declared that the fate of Saddam Hussein was up to the Iraqi people. Occasionally, he indicated that removal of Saddam would be welcome, but for very practical reasons there was never a promise to aid an uprising. While we hoped that popular revolt or coup would topple Saddam, neither the U.S. nor the countries of the region wished to see the breakup of the Iraqi state. We were concerned about the long-term balance of power at the head of the Gulf. Trying to eliminate Saddam, extending the ground war into an occupation of Iraq, would have violated our guideline about not changing objectives in midstream, engaging in "mission creep," and would have incurred incalculable human and political costs. Apprehending him was probably impossible. We had been unable to find Noriega in Panama, which we knew intimately. We would have been forced to occupy Baghdad and, in effect, rule Iraq. The coalition would instantly have collapsed, the Arabs deserting it in anger and other allies pulling out as well. Under those circumstances, furthermore, we had been self-consciously trying to set a pattern for handling aggression in the post-cold war world. Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally exceeding the U.N.'s mandate, would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the U.S. could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land. It would have been a dramatically different--and perhaps barren--outcome

Bush Sr. isn't a dastardly person like Jr. is. It is too bad his brains didn't make it into W's head. The problems we have are a result of W's feelings of inadequacy (well founded I might add).

As far as the video clip goes I think Bill Kristol and the Fox Noise talking heads are trying to scare the sheep and the fence sitters away from voting for Obama. Kristol repeats the lie that Obama would sit down with our enemies with no precondition. Obama has repeatedly explained himself. They only spout what the sheep will buy.

Not sure about the interim period. However the first gulf war need not have been fought. GWHB snookered Saddam into invading Kuwait. Why would he do that? Well he is an ex Navy pilot with strong ties to the military. He just could stomach the cuts that the end of the cold war was bringing to the military(and military contractors). What better way than to turn their ally into the new Hitler and frighten Americans into defending the freedom....er,..um the Kingdom of Kuwait.
Reply
I retrospect this snooker turned out to be a good thing. Why? Because Saddam, was developing a nuclear capacity, undetected by his enabling allies in the West. I say enabling because Saddam would never had gotten the materials had Raygun not taken him off the list of nations who supported terrorism. That allowed Saddam to buy Western technology from us and our other allies. Saddam even sent undercover procurment agents to get items that even the Rayguns wouldn't let him have, right under their noses. Anyway the facilities were destroyed by bombs during the run-up to the first war and Saddam was never able to rebuild them.-

I don't know. I also don't know HOW he did that. "Snookering" Saddam into invading Kuwait assumes that Saddam was either an idiot or a trator (or both) willing to bring a disaster to his own country in order to please a foreign "snookerer".
I'm very sceptical about arguments based on an assumtion that everyone is an idiot.

Are you even bothering to think before you type? If anyone is anti-american, it is everyone who has been behind bush/cheney/mccain and gang this whole time. THEY/YOU have reduced our country to what it has become today. The name calling is not only juvenile but dangerous because you are an ADULT not a child on a playground. You are scary and are likely indoctrinating your children to be as ignorant and foolish as you are. If you would just stop a moment and try to look at everything objectively, you would see the error of your ways. However, if after reading, hearing, seeing and knowing all that we've had before us in way of information, you still can believe what you wrote, you'll never be able to do that. All objectivity is out the window and insanity rules your household. That there are so many more of you out there is frightening for our entire country.

Cleare, I think the number of dead among our allies is more in the range of 1,100 to 1,200. There are other dead though. There are over 1,000 military contractors. There are also about 1,000 U.S. and allied dead in Afghanistan. So your total is pretty close.

It absolutely amazes me that someone who is, presumably, part of the "Christian Right" (Bef1000), or perhaps simply ultra-right, would even type a message portraying anyone who is supportive of Obama as "creeps...disgusting...and scum". That's "love thy neighbor" at its best {{NOT}}
I used to come onto Propeller daily because I could find intelligent - albeit it frequently conflicting - frames of reference. Because it WAS intelligent discourse, it would encourage me to consider both sides of the story...I followed all of the links provided...and actually thought (sometimes very hard) about everyone's perspective. I learned a lot. However, lately, the vitriol has become so infantile and acerbic that I tend to shy away from this site.
It's good to see some of the people from the "old" propellor. There were many of you, both sides of the fence, I simply just respected. You provided your thoughts, often times links, occassionally humor. For that, I that you all.
Bef1000, you simply spew hate. Thanks for your opinion, but no thanks. It's time for this populace as a country to move on....past the "same 'ole, same 'ole". It's time to anticipate future needs, and to act upon them. And we need an intelligent person to guide that helm; to look at various options; to anticipate "unintended consequences"; to just, plain old lead. I'm tired of riding "the hell in a hand basket" express. I want off. I need as a leader someone who can do that. My prayers (yes, I, too, am a Christian) are with Obama. Please save your hate for another forum.
And this, folks, is the most I've ever written on Propeller. Thank you...thank you, very much! (And God bless Elvis!)

There is no one more anti-american than McCain.
Reply
Obama is a self-made man who worked his way up from school-lunch assistance to the Dem candidate for the presidency. He is the American Dream.
You`re just jealous because you`ve never seen such a real man before who actually worked for it and earned it.
McCain on the other hand is a socialist who has gotten ahead solely by living off other people and other people`s money. No talent, no brains, no nothing.
He even betrayed our military and vets by voting against VA funding five times, voting against troop funding, voting against armor, voting against equal down time as combat time, voting against ending a counterproductive and completely unnecessary war, and being against the New GI bill. McCain has his world-class socialized medicine, so why should he care if any other Vets get what they deserve. He makes it incredibly obvious he does not care if they live, die, heal, or whatnot, just as long as he has enough fodder to become a `war president`.
As far as connections go, have you ever heard of the bin Ladens? They are family friends and past business associates with the Bush family. But that`s ok, right, cause the Bushies are Republicans and bin Ladin only killed 3,000 Americans. Ayers did not kill a fly, but Obama is a Dem so obviously Ayers is more dangerous in your RW logic.
The anti-earmark/pro-entitlement McCain picked the earmark queen for his running mate. Mr. Experience also showed some swell judgment by choosing an unvetted and completely inexperienced running mate.
Bush/McCain go against everything we and the Founding Fathers stand for. Honesty, ethics, constitutionalism, rule by law, fiscal responsibility, govt for the people, etc.-

1980 During the campaign most polls showed the two major candidates locked in an even contest. The election produced a different picture. The Republican team of Ronald Reagan and George Bush was swept into office in a landslide victory with about 51% of the popular vote (and 489 electoral votes) to Carter's 42% (49 electoral votes) and Anderson's 7% (no electoral votes). Here is the faith in McCain. The dumbocrat dribble and kindergarden whining is unbelievable. Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black. Racism knows no color. There are White racist,Black racist,Brown racist, ECT. To some it is a hatred, to some it is distrust, and to others it is a tool of deceit. The last thing the USA needs at this time is an Amateur. There is no time for on the job training. More Socialist debt is definitely not what we need. Research what and who you vote for, check your resources, do not buy into the hype, think and reason for yourself. Being what one "guppy" called an old f*rt, I have already survived this type situation(Carter years), and really shiver at the thought of having to go through it again. Therefore the inexperience definitely concerns me. The Socialist leaning is a big red flag. Obama's record shows nothing to recommend him. Pretty words and rhetoric may soothe the soul but do nothing to solve problems.

According to the right wing it's only socialism if you take care of the poor, sick, uneducated and downtrodden. If you try to improve the whole country by strengthening it's weakest members you are a socialist. As long as those on the left keep their foaming at the mouth hatred for anyone and anything further to the right of them going, AND those on the right keep insisting that democrats are the scourge of America, we, the people, will NEVER take back this country.
Reply
How on earth can we, when so many see those Americans with whom they disagree as bigger enemies than our true enemies?
It is time for everyone to stop the hateful rhetoric -- from the right AND from the left -- take a deep breath and realize that almost EVERYONE who is an American wants just about the same thing for the country, we just believe that different means of getting to those goals will be more effective.
I truly believe that this hatred is largely responsible for the stock market crash as well as the fact that we still have no real energy plan. The democrats will not allow Bush to get credit for anything good, and now that they have control of Congress, the Republicans block anything that might have merit so that the dems don't get credit.
It is really time to vote ALL the incumbents out. We can change all 435 representatives and 1/3 of Congress next month-- we all just have to be willing to throw out OUR bum as well as talking about getting rid of everyone else's bum. If we could do this a few times, Congress might just get the message and start working together FOR US rather than just playing grab ass, gotcha, cover my own ass and spite king.-

Have you read it? According to lawyers who have, an 'emergency' could be constituted by something like Hurricane Katrina. Or declaring war against Iran. Or a large explosion, terrorist-caused or not.

Once the gov't has all the guns, the rest of the freedoms guaranteed by the constitution mean nothing because the powers that be -- from the federal gov't --to the military, to the FBI to the state gov'ts and the the state police forces right down to the local gov'ts and the local police will know that we are powerless to resist them.

If republicans made abortion illegal, what would they use to win elections.. they don't want to make abortions illegal, they thrive on calling Libbies baby killers.

Agree with you except for one thing, amazed. We the people have in our hands a much more powerful weapon then guns. A general strike, with even 50% of the population participating, would bring the administration down in two weeks, if not sooner. And without a drop of blood shed.

And while you were accomplishing the strike, your co-worker would be accomplishing the coop.....here in America there is always the guy who is going to do "one up" on you.

As for taking back the country, it is too late. The Robber Baron's in office will escape with their pockets full and leave the country. They do not really care who gets it next. They got theirs.
Just focus on the bringing good into your community, and helping your fellow man. There is no solution through the same door we entered the problem. Be your own leader. Hold anyone who is elected to the highest possible standard regardless of party race or creed! You cannot let these enemies of the people survive! -

Never. I love my country to much to vote for a traitor like Mccain. Since you like Mccain you must hate America. See I can do the propaganda thing too. I really do not believe you hate America, you are just a brainwashed fool, like every other republican in this country who will vote against America by voting for Mccain..

McCain already has his own "terrorist" problem, which few have heard of. Ever hear of the convict G. Gordon Liddy?

It is a riot listening to the pro Obama and Pro McCain continue to dis the other candidate/party. Do you really think either one of these yokels is the answer. For the last 100 years or so this country has been run by either a republican or democrat and let's not forget about our congress. Where are we today? Morally corrupt, almost bankrupt, being taxed to death, controlled by corporate greed, continually interefering in the internal affairs of other countries and on and on. We need another party that puts, we the people first, and not their own personal agenda. Is there one out there? I don't know. But I do know that these two are not what we need to right this country.

there are several alternative parties and also several democratic processes that can help create and support a multi party system. many democratic countries allow for "fusion" candidates (2 or more parties sponsoring 1 or more candidates), IRV (instant run-off voting - instead of voting either or, you get to vote 1st, 2nd, 3rd) and proportional representation (if your party gets 11% of the vote, your party gets 11% of the legislative seats).
Reply
problem is, every time a "third" party candidate runs for office, he/she is branded as a "spoiler". such a candidate is also up against two very difficult sociological problems: first: name recognition - "third" party candidates don't get near the press coverage as the republocrats; second - people are hesitant to vote for someone they don't think has a chance of winning.
if you want alternatives go find them and support them...with your votes, your time and your money. the alternatives ARE out there. but, you'll have a hard fight on your hands --- the republocrats are perfectly happy with the existing system.

I hope you americans can think with your minds and not your Bias mentalities. Your ship is sinking and the question becomes do you float with one or continue to sink with the other. We all know that mccain is nothing more than a extention of bush and to see palin in the back ground is nothing less than SCARY "ONLY IN america"

Bill Kristol, the antithesis of Billy Crystal. Comedy with a death mask if you will. These guys can talk about war, invasions and the like with such a Cavalier manner. As if death and destruction are no big deal. And it's not, to them. It's just a means to an end. The hysterical (thankfully dwindling) pack of supporters for this kind of talk think they are insulated from the fallout loose cannons could precipitate.

This administration has actively considered an October surprise of international consequence, but they worry that it might have a negative economic impact on their bunker financial strategy. Hopefully their own fear will render them inert. Reject their fear, embrace hope, work in your community.

If Bush does bomb Iran, I don't think the ensuing slaughter of our troops in neighboring Iraq would do a thing to boost Republican standing. At the outset of this campaign, McCain having served for 2 decades and been through the Naval Academy plus the hell he endured as a POW gave him the patina of Commander in Chief material.
Reply
But watching him lurch through this campaign constantly changing positions and even contradicting himself, seeing that he is incapable even of controlling a campaign staff, much less a whole nation at war -- that has in the eyes of most voters utterly destroyed any leadership credentials he may have claimed. The polls show it to be true. -

Bush added a 4 trillion dollar national debt to U.S over his 2 terms. Instead of trying to "liberalize" the world, shouldn't he look at his own people and try to help them at a time of need? Hasn't he realized war isn't the answer by this point. Help yourself before trying to help others. The Bush Admin got wealthy while the citizens are suffering.

First, I don't think Mr. Kristol has a great deal of insight on current events. It was clear that he was just speculating. He even left himself with outs in case the administration does nothing so he will be able to claim he was right either way.
Reply
Second, I notice that there were half a dozen or so comments by names that have no history of props, stories submitted nor do they provide any data about themselves in their profiles. Their comments were completely destructive, and two of them repeated the same message word for word. It's been said before, but I'll repeat it: Don't feed the trolls. Just neg them and move on. -

Just finished watching a documentary on Richard Nixon. The corollary between Nixon's administration and Bush's is startling. Nixon ignored subpeonas from Congress and did the same things- prolonged an unpopular war, broke the laws, illegal domestic spying, obstruction of justice.
Reply
It's like history repeated 30 years later. This administration is more dangerous than Nixon's.-

Got something against peanuts? Being like Carter isn't a bad thing. Nor is having dignity and respect for humanity. The times are certainly like Carter's. Oil squeeze, Mid East tensions, and the cynical manipulation of foreign affairs by the CIA and neocons to gain control of the Executive Branch.

Yep, I think your on to something.-

Carter was also a door to door proselytizer trying to convert people to Christianity before he ran for Governor. I do not see why the Righties hate him so much. He was essentially one of THEM! A Conservative Christian with a Social Conscience.

Oh, I guess it was that he was a Nuclear Scientist, which made him Uppity.
