A scandal twice the size of Ted Steven' s is brewing for Sarah Palin. No, it' s not the troopergate report, which in its own right is a monumental scandal, but one that hasn' t hit the mainstream media yet. This one' s a doozie. A half million dollar doozie.

Interesting. Many questions are asked, but where are the answers?

As an attempt to keep this whole process somewhere within the range of sanity -- you get too worked up and it spoils your supper,

Remember about 3 weeks ago there was a post in the Humor section called "the Other Guy?". It humorously pointed out that although you may think a particular candidate is horrible, stupid, of uncertain parentage, kicks his/her dog, is uneducated, eats children fried for breaksfast, has bad breath, etc. that there are something like 60 million people out there that feel exactly the same about your favored candidate. Put things in perspective a little. It's only politics.

As I go to the grocery store here in my little corner of ex-urban MO, I see lots of signs up for all kinds of candidates. On the presidential level, I guess I see a few more McC/Palin than Obama/Biden. Maybe they're more ambitious sign stickers; maybe they have teens that they can tap for slave labor; maybe it'd be different if I went another route to the store. In talking to people about Palin, I hear things like "don't know about her" or "she seems OK"; never once have I heard anything about "abuse of power", "troopergate" , or some other things that judging by postings here are of momentous import to the future of the universe. It looks like nobody gives a d*mn.

It's OK to be zealous. The world needs zealots too -- if for no other reason than to give ideas to the people who actually end up doing stuff. But after a while. listening to zealots becomes soooo borrrring.

This is not a paid or uppaid political announcement. My name is Chevydog, and I have no idea whether I endorse what I say.

I'll give an answer. Who cares?

Did she get a favor in return for hiring the contractor? Maybe.
Did the town get shafted by the contractor in return? Don't think so.
Was another contractor that submitted a better offer turned down? Don't think so.

So Palin gets a "thank you." Okay, maybe not the best thing to do if you're campaigning on ethical reform, but not the end of the world. Definitely not a "massive scandal" by any stretch of the imagination.

Contractors quite often give building scraps to people who ask for them. Maybe the Palins made friends with some of the contractors, and maybe they helped on the house free of charge.

The only scandal would be if this were a condition of their contract, which this story is EXTREMELY far from proving, or even insinuating!

I don't have the answers, only the situation. There is nothing that can be learned without first asking a question.

                  ROTFLMAO\
This story revolves around the fact that Spenard Builders Supply is connected to some building projects. This is hilarious. Some facts.

Think about the size of Wasilla. What companies are there up there to choose from for building supplies. Spenard Builders Supply is the biggest supplier of building materials in Alaska. If you want a log house there is Northern Log and Lumber. Otherwise you have Home Depot and Lowes. For serious construction supplies who are you left with? Spenard Builders Supply

This is such a good conspiracy on the top but people forget that Alaska is sparsely populated so some things are limited as to where you can buy them. My wife and I being originally from a rural area we are aware of limitations of where you can get stuff.

Just try and build a house from only what you can get at Home Depot and Lowes. A lot can be done but normally those places are used for smaller jobs not a house.

Try again libs. Think and investigate before you sound foolish like here. Much ado about nothing.

We'll see, I don't think it's been looked into by the major players yet, so there may be a nice story for a NYT, Wash. Post, or other major paper to delve into.

Keith Olberman did a segment on it Monday night. He also interviewed the man investigating this story. Unfortunately Wasilla doesn't require building permits.

All you have to do is google what building supply places are in Wasilla and the story falls apart. Keep in mind the small population of the state.

It's amazing what Sarah Palin has just done. She's guilty and should be stepping down, but instead like Richard Nixon she is saying "I'm not a crook."

The investigation said she violated Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act, which states, "… each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust.

The report, which was released by Alaska lawmakers Friday, examined whether Palin abused the powers of her office by exerting pressure to have her ex-brother-in-law, an Alaska State Trooper engaged in a bitter divorce and child custody fight with her sister, fired. After the state's public safety commissioner Walter Monegan rebuffed pressure to fire him, Monegan was fired by Palin.

                      Palin say's:
Sarah Palin said Saturday the report cleared her of wrongdoing or unethical activity. Then she told a reporter to "read the report."

We did Sarah and guess what- you are guilty.

Problem is, Chapter 39.52 does not have anything to do with official misconduct regarding the firing, attempt to fire, or wrongfully dismiss, a state employee.

And here's what's really tragic: you can't prove otherwise.

So far all we can determine from the investigation of Palin is that Alaskan Democrats don't know how to read and apply their own law.

The way I read it, it regards ethics of a financial nature, not the firing that she has the authority to do anyway. The proper panel is the Personnel Board.

Just as an observation, there used to routinely be stories in the papers about New York City seceding and becoming the 51st state. Lots of people talk lots of things that have no basis in reality and no intention of developing one. Politicians in general are around the top of this list.

Just another observation, New York seceding and becoming the 51st state would still have them belonging to the United States, not quite the same as the desire to leave the United States altogether, like Alaskan secessionists want. Whether based in reality or not, wishing to secede from the United States doesn't seem like the most patriotic thing.

This story is nothing but speculation and rumor. I didn't see real quotes. I didn't see a "follow the money" story. I read something similar to a rough draft for a movie script.

This is the best the left can through at the GOP? Last week it was McCain and the attacks because the the Keating 5. This week it's this "scandal". What a joke. Instead of making stories on why we shouldn't vote for McCain & Palin, tell us why we should vote for your team. Open his resume up. Discuss why a jr. senator from Illinois with very little in the way of a track record should be president. Explain why a plagiarist who even copied his resume and as a candidate drew less than 1% of the vote deserves to be VP.

It is. Google - building supplies "Wasilla, Alaska"

There is a Home Depot, Lowes, a place to get kits to make log homes, and a block and concrete place.
Then there is the larges supplier of building supplies in Alaska, Spenard Builders Supply .

                                  That's all folks.

Very interesting!! Old Sarah and Todd Palin seem to have been very busy bedding themselves down with scum. They also seem to have the proficiency of knowing how to beat tax payers.. What a pair! I guarantee Todd's the brains behind all this. Sarah is the attention getter, but definitely not the brains.

NOW we're supposed to OOHHHHH and AHHHH over Sarah getting her picture taken, yet again?? I don't think so!

There's also some problems with some of the things Sarah Palin is running around doing, such as enciting riots with people calling for the assassination of Barack Obama.

Let me see if I understand correctly.

Obama, Frank, and Dodd are free to conspire to profit from the corruption that nearly brings down the entire US economy, but if Palin gets a few sticks and stones to build a house, it's "massive."

please explain how Obama conspired to profit from corruption.

then explain how Phil Graham, McCain's top economic adviser, was named yesterday as one of the ten people most responsible for the financial mess we're now in.

I love that Bush get's no blame for the economy. It's a senator and two members of the house who single handedly destroyed our economy. When the president who grabbed more power than any president in history gets off scott free. Obama isn't president yet. Blame him for the mistakes that he makes, blame Bush for the countless mistakes he made and the lives that he wasted.

No one is saying Bush is off the hook. There's lots of blame to go around. But please...there is absolutely nothing negative you can throw at Palin that is not immediately dwarfed by orders of magnitude by the likes of Obama, Frank, and Dodd. And we don't even know the extent of the damage to our economy yet. Or whether any of us will have jobs a year from now.

I got no problem with Palin paying the piper if there was malfeasance in the construction of her home. Throw the book at her. But then be ready to throw a proportionately sized book at the above three stooges, too.

She is not running for president. She is McCain's sidekick. I say blame the guy running the show. He is RESPONSIBLE for the well being of the commonwealth. Not the little guys who were just running things on a day to day basis. Blame the person who's overall vision was so short sided as to cause a world crisis.

And since it is so cut and dry to you that those three are the cause of all of this, why hasn't the attorney general who is in Bush's pocket gone after them? Bush could easily give some clout to McCain and hurt Obama if he ordered the attorney general to investigate, couldn't he?

Why wouldn't he do that? I wonder.

Again, the bottom line is who held the veto power the last 8 years. That is the person or body responsible. Answer: GW Bush, who failed to use this power responsibly.

"there is absolutely nothing negative you can throw at Palin that is not immediately dwarfed by orders of magnitude by the likes of Obama, Frank, and Dodd."

when it comes to Palin, maybe its true. But this possible scandal is much bigger since she might have actually brokent he law.

                                              AND...
when it comes to our financial situation, there is PLENTY to throw at McCain.

                                              SO...AGAIN:

please explain how Phil Graham, McCain's top economic adviser, was named yesterday as one of the ten people most responsible for the financial mess we're now in.

because this FACT makes it so that there is absolutely nothing negative you can throw at Obama that is not immediately dwarfed by orders of magnitude by the likes of McCain and Graham.

did the GOP vet this woman?

                                          sure doesn't seem like it.

is it even possible that an egg costs a buck in alaska? that maybe a 500k house IN alaska would be worth, say 200k, or less, in let's say Chevydog's ex urban MO?

cmon. get your head out the gutter and get some perspective.

she was a mayor. she's a governor and now candidate for VP. she's got more executive experience than O, Bidena nd McCain combined.

its kind of funny. Biden was up here yesterday ******* all over McCain and he get's a free pass?

they can dish it out, but they can't take it. the dems are a bunch of babies.

A little cooking experience comes into play here. It's not brewing if no one is stirring.
No one is stirring, so it's not a brewing scandal. It's more like a passing coincidence.

In other words, more proof is needed.

Actually, any proof is needed, but I gave you a 'pos' anyway.

SARA PALIN WORKED HARD TO MAKE A SCANDAL OF THE ACORN ISSUE. BUT TODAY THE PHOTO OF MCCAIN IN AN ACORN CONFERENCE WAS PUBLISHED.:) iT TURNS OUT MCCAIN WAS A MEMBER AT SOME POINT :) WHAT GOES AROUND,GETS AROUND :) I THINK PALIN MAY REGRET NOW HER DIRT-DIGGING.

LET MAVETRICK MCCAIN PULL THE SAME DIRT.IT WILL COVER HIM LATER:)

THE BALANCE WAS TIPPED IN FAVOR OF PALIN. 8 REPUBLICANS PROBABLY VOTED FOR HER. INSTEAD ONLY 4 DEMOCRATS PARTICIPATED IN THE VOTING. HOW DID EACH MEMBER VOTE? A SECOND TRIAL IS NECESSARY. IF PALIN GOES SCOT-FREE SHE WILL ABUSE HER POWER AGAIN.

SHE SAID SHE WAS GLAD THE AMERICAN PRESIDENTS ARE MORE POWERFUL THAN CONGRESS AND THE SUPREME COURT. WELL, NOT REALLY OUR FOUNDING FATHERS WORRIED TYRANTS COULD TAKE OVER IF THEY WERE GIVEN SUPERIOR POWERS. HOW DOES PALIN MAKE SUCH AN ABUSIVE REMARK?

IF PALIN HAD ANY DIGNITY, SHE WOULD NOT HAVE ABUSE EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE. SHE CLEARLY VIOLATED HER POSITION. IN REALITY USE OF COMPUTERS THAT LEAVE NO OFFICIAL RECORDS IS VERY SUSPICIOUS. AS AN OFFICIAL WHO IS PAID PUBLIC TAXES, SHE HAD NO RIGHT TO ACT ARBITRARILY. AS A STATE EMPLOYEE PALIN IS ACCOUNTABLE FOR HER ACTIONS IN HER OFFICE. WHY PROSECUTE PRIVATE EMPLOYEES WHO USE COMPUTERS TO MAKE ILLEGAL DEALS, BUT RULE PALIN FOR DOING THE SAME,OR SIMILAR THINGS?
