It's not a gaffe. A gaffe is a mistake. It's a misinterpretation on your part.

It's similar to if you called me a Christian, and I replied to someone asking me about it, "I don't know why people are questioning 'my Christian beliefs.' "
Get it? It's the way people speak. There's no gaffe, and I've never been a Christian. And no--since I'm certain you're wondering, neither am I Muslim.
And no soul-searching was required for me to make that statement. Just logic and linguistic convention.
