In a story with direct relevance to the murder of the crusading Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, the Chechen War and with grim echos of the assassination of Alexander Litvinenko in London, the Russian Regime again shows its brutal face with another apparent attempted murder, this time in France, of Karinna Moskalenko, a lawyer who is regarded as the country's most prominent defender of Kremlin opponents. She was about to attend the trial of two Chechen brothers, Dzhanrail and Ibragim Makhmudov, who have been charged with having carried out surveillance on Politkovskaya and a former police officer, Sergei Khadzhikurbanov, who is accused of giving them technical help.Politkovskaya was shot dead outside her Moscow flat.
Once again we are forced to confront the question as to what kind of ally or partner Moscow and Putin are. This question becomes acute also for Poland and the Czech Republic who are "offending" by supporting the US missile shield in their respective countries. Then there are the unresolved issues surrounding Kosovo, Georgia, South Grossetia and - not yet on the boil, but warming up, issues with Ukraine.
Another Cold War, another Hot War? Who can tell - and who knows what kind of stomach for a confrontation a brand-new US President is going to have - or what direction such a confrontation might take for a nation still trying to cope with a potential economic meltdown..

I had a very hard time, technically, manipulating this story and getting it out but I hope that it made it and that you'll find it as intriguing as I did!

Wow, first thing that comes to mind; this is new material for a T Clancy novel.
Russia has always been brutal in its efforts to get what it wants, has been invaded each century by someone, and they are also a nation of thinkers; but with a vengeance.
This is not an excuse for such actions, but if you play with a scorpion you will get stung, maybe deadly.

There are sinister people in our world who operate in the shadows. All anyone who can do about it is trust their instincts.

The Russian "problem" is not going to go away any time soon. With the clever-or lets say crafty switch that Putin pulled by getting himself elected Prime Minister - and his henchman, Medvedev as the new President - when his mandatory term limit as Pres. expired, he actually succeeded in tightening his grip on power. The elections were also hideously fraudulent - some ballot boxes contained far more votes than the number of eligible voters in the constituency.Let us also note that Medved means bear and this dies not imply a "tame" one on a chain. Its a long time since the gazing into the eyes of GWB and the pooty-poot flirtation. In Central Europe that particular infatuation is regarded as the greatest foolishness of the current US regime.
Expansionist by nature, the Soviet Union has bitterly resented NATO involvement in what it considers its sphere of influence - and realistically speaking some of the interventions HAVE been about as provocative as missiles in Cuba. Controlling a major proportion of the oil supply to Europe gives them additional clout.
Next big flashpoint is going to be the Ukraine.
If you didn't know it already remember that you heard it here!
And regarding the incident of this story - let's see what more will emerge, but it looks very suspicious indeed and matches the MO in the Litvinenko case which SHOULD have led to breaking off diplomatic relations but "pragmatism" ruled the day.

How close is the murderous Putin going to take Russia back toward the former Soviet Union.
