I use firewire a lot in making digital movies and recording albums to digital files on my MacBook Pro, but I could easily use USB as well. It's slower, but I can work with it.

For audio recording Firewire is simply much more reliable than USB. This is a disappointing move for Apple, which has always been the preferred platform for pro audio work.

Also, Firewire backup drives are more useful in OS X than USB.
