In Endorsing Obama, Powell Rejects McCain and the GOP »
Posted By capj71 1 year, 1 month ago in NewsColin Powell’s endorsement of Barack Obama today was not a big surprise. He has been hinting at it for months. The shock is in how deeply a man who was Secretary of State a few years ago has broken with his own party. Powell not only rejected McCain/Palin but the entire direction of the GOP.

You know ... I thought I heard in Powell's voice ... a real sense of sadness at the direction the Republican party has gone.
Reply
The road they have chosen ... under the highly partisan, extraordinarily divisive leadership of Newt Gingrich, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Karl Rove and Tom Delay ... have taken the Republican Party to the lowest depths of depravity and hypocrisy.
What do they stand for any longer?
They say they stand for Small Government ... then they promptly increase the size of Government 40%.
They say they stand for Fiscal Conservatism ... then they promptly increase spending to unprecedented levels.
They say they oppose Nation Building ... then they promptly invade a large nation and attempt to re-build the nation.
They say they oppose National Healthcare ... but they all enjoy a Single Payer Government plan that they absolutely love.
They say they support the Military ... but they vote against the GI Bill ... they vote for the SMALLEST cost of living increase for soldiers in 20 years ... while they vote to pay BLACKWATER soldiers $150,000 a year ... while they neglect VA Hospitals ... and Barracks fall into decrepit disrepair.
They say they are opposed to anything that REMOTELY resembles Socialism ... but they come up with a Bail-Out that is more Socialistic than anything envisioned by even the most left wing legislator in Sweden!
The Republican Party has completely lost their way ... completely lost their center ... completely lost their credibility.

Powell is his own man, it was his choice and I respect his choice even tho I will vote for McCain. Although I have not lost any respect for Powell for his past accomplishments, I am nonetheless very disappointed in Powell for making the choice to abandon his party and a comrade in arms (McCain). As far as his comment about Palin's inexperience, he himself had no experience in government when he was chosen as Secretary of State. And for that matter there are/were lots of inexperienced people that were elected to President and other high offices as well. So lets don't get so one-sided about this, both parties are guilty of the same thing.

Having served with Colin Powell I do know him to be a most honorable
Reply
man who has always put the USA ahead of his personal feelings. As a
Commander he was strict but fair, no nonsense in decisions, highly
respected, truly a soldier's soldier, yet never in doubt as a
leader.I was thoroughly disappointed that he did not pursue the
presidency. I feel strongly that had he run America would be far
better off than it is at present.Though I do not share his
endorsement of Barrack Obama I do respect his decision. Should
Barrack Obama win the election and if Colin Powell agrees to serve in
the administration. It would serve to allay the deep reservations
about Barrack Obama's inexperience and Socialist leaning which do
prevent me from supporting him in this election. As I read some
comments made prior to mine, I feel very sorry that anyone could
possibly think that the element of race would ever enter into General Powell's decisions. As per the order of the day,Duty Bound.

Actually Obama should turn down the endorsement from a war criminal like Powell.

The Bagman Cometh: Obama Embraces War Criminal's Endorsement
Democratic Party circles are in raptures over Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama. One can see the heavily-blinkered logic behind their elation; now that our national politics has been reduced to a petty squabble over spoils among shifting factions in the imperial court, a nod from a consummate courtier like Powell is indeed a glittering prize for an ambitious prince.
But out in the real world, where the operations of imperial power have left smoking trails of murder and ruin across the globe, the "endorsement" of a man who played an indispensable role in the slaughter of more than a million innocent people in a war of Hitlerian aggression should be regarded as a thing of shame, and vociferously rejected by anyone with a scintilla of honor or morality.
It is not too much of a stretch to say that Colin Powell is more responsible for the mass murder spree in Iraq than any other person except George W. Bush, who gave the actual order for the hit. For it was Powell who "made the sale" for the Bush Faction's deceitful warmongering campaign, with his infamous February 2003 presentation to the UN, laying out the false evidence about Iraq's non-existent weapons of mass destruction. After that farrago of artfully delivered lies, the American Establishment – urged on by the fawning, bloodthirsty commentariat – lined up solidly behind the war. After all, if Colin Powell – so "reasonable," so "honorable," so "honest" and "bipartisan" – stood foursquare behind the Bush case for war, then it must be ironclad.
This was, again, the logic of courtiers, with little connection to reality. Powell's reputation as a wise, moderate, impartial statesman – the very thing that made him the most effective shill for the war crime in Iraq – was itself almost entirely a fiction. By the time he made his shameless UN appearance, Powell had already spent almost four decades as a bagman – and frontman – for some of the most vicious and ugly elements in American politics and government. From the My Lai massacre to Iran-Contra, from Washington's long and murderous collusion with Saddam to its long and murderous campaigns to remove him, Powell has been instrumental in perpetrating or covering up atrocities and abominations on a gigantic scale....

I knew people would start saying that this was a race-based decision.
I think anyone who knows anything about Colin Powell knows that he is much smarter than that.
You, however, are not.
You, however, assume that because Colin Powell and Barack Obama are both black, that Colin Powell's support of him by default MUST mean that it is simply a racial kinship that was behind his decision.
I'm white. McCain's white. Guess what? I'm NOT voting for the guy who voted FOR 90% of George Bush's decisions. Not because of any other reason than that. I am disgusted with how this nation has been led and lied to for the past eight years, and I firmly believe that a new direction is in order. -

Powell made an obviously well-thought out decision and you simplify it down to "he's a racist."

in other words, you've demeaned a black man's intellect down to the point to where you think he is making decisions based on lowest common denominator thinking.

Of course it is a blow but if the republicans attempt to assassinate his character then I'm afraid it may seal the deal for Obama. McCain / Palin need to put a damper on the endorsement by keeping it level and respectful. However, IMHO, I think they should just ignore it.

I have long been a fan of Colin Powell as an honest man. I simply do not believe that he put Bush before our nation.
Remember, there were MANY legislators who are angry and very bitter at being duped by Bush.
Arlen Spector opposed involving our nation in Iraq. He says he saw no reason ... that it was stupid.
He has said that Dick Cheney came to pay him a visit ... personally ... and made an impassioned plea that there was PROOF that Saddam Hussein had 'Suitcase Nuclear Bombs' and had plans to use them.
Remember, this is before many realized that George W. Bush, Karl Rove, and Dick Cheney were bona fide LIARS ... who gladly put ideology before our nation.
This administration lives by one credo above all others ... "Win by any means necessary".
In the face of Machiavellian men like this, honest men are at a disadvantage.
I believe Colin Powell is an honest man and I have been rooting for men like him to exert more influence over the Perversion that is the Modern Day Republican Party.
I mean ... do we have to wait for Newt Gingrich TO DIE before the Republican Party returns to it's roots?

We now know that Cheney's office cooked up phony "intelligence" shared with Congress and honest men like Powell within the administration as if it were gospel. It said that we knew for a fact that Saddam had developed nuclear weapons, and had succeeded in building a briefcase nuke. Saddam, Cheney's liars said, had direct connections with bin Laden and Al Qaeda, and was going to transfer such briefcase nukes to Al Qaeda so they could turn one after another US major city into a nuclear holocaust.

Considering Powell's current feelings towards the Bush administration, I think you should give him the benefit of the doubt. I think he was being a good soldier and he trusted Bush. He probably had his doubts, but he gave Bush the benefit of the doubt because of that trust. I think that's part of the reason why he endorsed Obama, because he feels betrayed by the Bush administration and he knows McCain will continue to move in that same direction.

This has revived my faith in the aptitude of the true conservatives to see that thcompany has been hijacked. I hope more and more come around and reject this Limbaugh type direction that the party has taken.

Oh man, you nailed it, lloydm65. Throw out everybody who can't pass the race test. Purge those who might have a gender identity problem too. And all those nut cases who believe in women's health issues need to go. Anybody who thinks massive deficits are a bad idea needs to get the ole heave ho. And no Muslims or Hindus or Buddhists or any other of those things the Christian Right knows are false religions. Dump anyone who in any way differs from your right-wing talking points. You'll finally have a perfect, unified party of at least a handful of people.

Look at the bright side lloydm65, once you and the right wingers have marginalized yourselves to 20 or 25% of the nation, the real republicans can go off, start their own party and become a going concern again. If your ilk retain control of the republican party in 2012, I predict that a third party will replace the republicans as the major opposition to democrats.

I think General Powell is one of those remaining intellectual, Eisenhower Republicans. I hope the truth that he delivered today will help the GOP get rid of its smear and fear politics. Liberal is not a dirty word. There are not pro-America and anti-America states or towns. Anything short of welfare for the rich is not socialism. It is time that a new GOP emerge routed in truth instead of schemes to con special interest groups into voting to have their money funneled to the wealthiest of Americans.

Colin Powell is a Republican who was echoing many of the same concerns this morning on Meet the Press that as a liberal I have been saying for years. On the social issues he is much more moderate than his party is right now. And I believe he has a deep-seated resentment over the intelligence that he was forced to sell leading up to Iraq War. Right now, he is much more in line with Democrats than he is with his own party. And that's no surprise. Powell is his own man. A man who bases he opinions in the real world. And that is a world from which the Republican Party is far removed these days....

So has Barack Obama. And if I'm not mistaken, the assaults on Obama came long before Palin, or McCain. Matter of fact, from my recollection it was fox news that started that ball rolling by saying Obama was a Muslim. Not that there's anything wrong with being a Muslim, but their clear intent was to play on terrorist fears. What goes around, comes around WJ. It might be ugly, and probably is wrong, but if you play with fire and get burned you have no one to blame but yourself. Not you, but those who threw the first lie, and those who ran with it, including John McCain when he consented to it through his silence. -

Yeah, you're right! I hate it when the truth comes out. It angers me when people talk about Sarah Palin not being ready for the Vice Presidency. I mean, come on!!! Just because it's true doesn't mean we have to belive it. I think when you have someone this far off of where the people want to be, you have to lie a little.

Don't you people want someone as Vice President that wants more power. She already has stated she'd love more control in the Senate even though she is part of the Executive branch.
We need a Dick Cheney in high heels. Hell, she's worse than Cheney. That's great!!!

As the infamous administration comes to an end we see several things taking a toll: oil, banking, and the threat of a surveillance state.
Now, it would be easy to say "give me your rights- or the terrorists will win" and it's just like "we have to act now- or the economy will crash." Isn't America bigger than both these problems? We have existed through troubled times as long as we did not let treason takeover our own government.
Elitists believe they are entitled to things because of their birth or familial relationships. They don't care about people who wish to prosper off their own merit. In fact they'd like to keep the playing field sloped in their favor.
Anyway, if you haven't seen in the news Bush is marching around meeting with the global leaders in the world. The goal is to push America into a "globally managed economy" which will destroy the democratic republic here.
McCain is his sidekick. Don't be fooled by these elitists. -

Why WOULDN'T Powell reject the Cons? They had him LIE about the anthrax to the American people which destroyed and killed 100s of thousands of human beings in a false war, and funnel a trillion dollars right out of the hands of the hard working American taxpayers into off-shore corporate accounts, and nearly broke the back of his beloved American military.
