As veteran who has served under General Colin Powell I do know him to be a most honorable man who has always put the USA ahead of his personal feelings. As a Commander he was strict but fair, no nonsense in decisions, highly respected, truly a soldier's soldier, yet never in doubt as a leader.I was thoroughly disappointed that he did not pursue the presidency. I feel strongly that had he run America would be far better off than it is at present.Though I do not share his endorsement of Barrack Obama I do respect his decision. Should Barrack Obama win the election and if General Powell agrees to serve in the administration. It would serve to allay the deep reservations about Barrack Obama's inexperience and Socialist leaning which do prevent me from supporting him in this election. I feel very sorry that anyone could possibly think that the element of race would ever enter into General Powell's decisions. His duty to this nation has always the foremost consideration.

Colin Powell is a war_criminal kiss_ass who got his "boost up the ladder" by trying to cover up My Lai. It is shameful that Powell's career ever continued (America would have been better off with it terminated) and that Americans can still be duped into listening to Powell.

The Bagman Cometh: Obama Embraces War Criminal'sEndorsement
Democratic Party circles are in raptures over Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama. One can see the heavily-blinkered logic behind their elation; now that our national politics has been reduced to a petty squabble over spoils among shifting factions in the imperial court, a nod from a consummate courtier like Powell is indeed a glittering prize for an ambitious prince.
But out in the real world, where the operations of imperial power have left smoking trails of murder and ruin across the globe, the "endorsement" of a man who played an indispensable role in the slaughter of more than a million innocent people in a war of Hitlerian aggression should be regarded as a thing of shame, and vociferously rejected by anyone with a scintilla of honor or morality.
It is not too much of a stretch to say that Colin Powell is more responsible for the mass murder spree in Iraq than any other person except George W. Bush, who gave the actual order for the hit. For it was Powell who "made the sale" for the Bush Faction's deceitful warmongering campaign, with his infamous February 2003 presentation to the UN, laying out the false evidence about Iraq's non-existent weapons of mass destruction. After that farrago of artfully delivered lies, the American Establishment – urged on by the fawning, bloodthirsty commentariat – lined up solidly behind the war. After all, if Colin Powell – so "reasonable," so "honorable," so "honest" and "bipartisan" – stood foursquare behind the Bush case for war, then it must be ironclad.
This was, again, the logic of courtiers, with little connection to reality. Powell's reputation as a wise, moderate, impartial statesman – the very thing that made him the most effective shill for the war crime in Iraq – was itself almost entirely a fiction. By the time he made his shameless UN appearance, Powell had already spent almost four decades as a bagman – and frontman – for some of the most vicious and ugly elements in American politics and government. From the My Lai massacre to Iran-Contra, from Washington's long and murderous collusion with Saddam to its long and murderous campaigns to remove him, Powell has been instrumental in perpetrating or covering up atrocities and abominations on a gigantic scale....

This causes me to lose all respect that I had for Powell, and I did have some. If you say he is not racist, you are wrong. There is no way a conservative could jump to supporting a radical leftist or worse without it being based on race.

lefty - Just to refresh your memory, Powell was probably the only moderating voice in the Bush administration counselling AGAINST the invasion. He famously told Bush that if he invaded Iraq, he would then OWN iraq, meaning Bush would then be responsible for Iraq's security, pacification, reconstruction, oil production, etc.
Reply
Powell's views were outweighed by those of Rumsfeld and Cheney. I am not sure about Rice anymore, but I think she was for the invasion.
Powell's misgivings were put to rest by CIA head George Tenet's reassurances that the evidence of Iraq's WMDs were a "slam dunk." Thereupon, Powell agreed to speak to the UN Security Council to present the "evidence" that the CIA and Pentagon intelligence had supposedly collected.
After it became clear that ALL THE EVIDENCE was either lies, falsified, or misinterpreted, Powell became increasingly isolated from the affairs of the White House. He considered that speech to be an utterly humiliating moment in his long and honorable career.
Powell has been a life-long Republican, a retired general, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staffs under GWH Bush, a NSA advisor, Secretary of State under GW Bush. He has had an unsullied reputation for honesty, decency, integrity, and even handed judgment.
THAT is why his endorsement of Obama carries such weight and credence. Does this information clarify things for you?? -

Actually, it was Powell who dissuaded GB, DC, and DR from invading Iraq first. This was during a discussion on 9/12/2001. Powell said we would immediately lose the world sympathy if we went after a country that had nothing to do with 9/11.

wildman - Everyone is certain or speculates that Powell is angry at Bush. Powell has described his attempts at moderating Bush's policies, but Powell has NEVER openly said anything negative about Bush himself. Above all else Powell is a soldier's soldier who remains loyal to his commander-in-chief.
Reply
Powell was actually positive about McCain as late as last year and donated to his campaign. McCain, after all, is a fellow veteran. Powell supposedly was on McCain's list of possible vice-presidential candidates.
So, to answer your question - NO, this is not a bit of revenge.
Why is it that every political figure, every newspaper, every community figure who endorses Obama is accused by you neocons as having an ulterior or sinister reason for doing so? While every one who endorses McCain is hailed as a true patriot and real American?

Colin Powell is a great and respected American who has served his country in uniform. His endorsement is beyond color and on merits, which he very eloquently explained.
Reply
As for McCain, he remains a hypocrite turned mudslinging coward who cannot see Americans in the eye and talk about his issues. His last "hail mary" pass in resorting to automated telephone calls to unsuspecting voters to tell that Obama is a terrorist, makes this old dog a scum bag! -

i'm hoping this endorsement moves some minds. we may never be able to bring around the entrenched neo-cons and fundamentalist fanatics, but maybe...just maybe this will sway a few fence sitters. especially military voters and their families.

You know I am truly amazed to see how some loyal born Americans are talking, it really upsets me to know how many racist and biggots are still out there. There is no such thing as a pure a race every one is mixed up and believe it or not every single person speaking and commenting, comes from a Black women...proven...believe it or not. So it's funny to me all you biggots out there hate your self. There is no more character and value amongst our American people, and everyday all minorites are putting their lifes on the life so you can speak freely they way you biggots are doing. I want a person of integrity and values, not of color to lead this country, and not because of what party they come from, but the right person for the job! how dare you think an Honerable man like Collin Powell would ever base his decision off of color. I am glad someone finally spoke the TRUTH.

You're worried about calls? Perhaps you should have your TV on. The Barry's got commercials on top of commercials. It's ridiculous. I know why the media likes him, he's making their payroll. Unlike the DNC we don't register children so calling them is a waste of time.

Gen. Powell himself would have been a good candidate for President had he not been quite so liberal. It isn't a surprise to me he's backing Obama. As an ex-police officer, it is my experience, and historically, the great majority of blacks have mob mentality. They stick together.

I want to add that the Democrats are the group most known for dirty politics, always have been. The difference is how each group deals with the bad eggs in their party. Republicans get purged in shame BY FELLOW Republicans while Democrats make excuses for their bad guys and fight tooth and nail to keep them in office. And with the aid of the liberal (unprincipled) media they are around for the rest of their destructive lives if they wish it. The truth hurts and you will reject it but look at history with an objective mind.
Dems get away with murder (Kennedy), rape (Clinton), fraud (too many to name) tax evasion (too many to name), drug dealing (several), prostitution (several, but the disgusting Barney Frank immediately comes to mind), mob connections and so much more. Can you not see how the Dems pushed the Republicans into this awful bail out, then afterward BLAMED them for passing it when the majority who voted for it were Democrats! Disgraceful!
And now you guys are supporting a drug user who isn't even a US citizen, who is in favor of killing Christians in Kenya (hacking them with machetes and burning them alive) and babies, even up to moments before full term, and in a most inhumane way. He wants to silence anyone who opposes him, regardless of our right to free speech. (And plans to install his own civil police force to accomplish this country wide) He's in favor of annihilation of the people of Israel. He illegally accepts campaign contributions from unsavory, Muslim foreigners and mobsters.( Why would a couple married over 10 years (max incubation period) have aids tests on a trip to Kenya? He IS rather feminine, isn't he?) And that's just the beginning!
Thank you, God, for McCain and his higher moral character. He isn't my first choice, and most Republicans concur, but he's the best , by far, of the two candidates and Palin is awesome while Biden is frankly, a bumbling, lying idiot, constantly spewing incorrect facts and plenty of gaffs. If the news networks you guys watch would report them all, you too would get a laugh out of this mess at least.
Can't we all come together and try to get the best, most respectable, moral leader we can?-

And how do Rep do that ?
Look at what they did to McC in 2000 and he was a Rep
Next what about Gore or Kerry, the way Rep's went after them, now you want to play nice, but still continue your BS """He illegally accepts campaign contributions from unsavory, Muslim foreigners and mobsters.( Why would a couple married over 10 years (max incubation period) have aids tests on a trip to Kenya? As for all those crimes you mention, Reps are as bad if not worse.
No, if it is a Dem, you do not have it in you to play nice. -
