Spending by both sides has topped $50 million, and the figure is growing. Most of those dollars have poured in since May, when the California Supreme Court turned what had been a slow-moving ballot initiative into a white-hot controversy by issuing the most sweeping declaration of fundamental gay rights to be found in U.S. law. Not only must gays be allowed to marry, the Republican-dominated court said , but it also flatly outlawed nearly any kind of discrimination against them.

Gay marriage is a fundamental right in California, Massachusetts and Connecticut. What amazes me is how a right can be fundamental today, and stripped away tomorrow. How can the people of a state decide which is fundamental? Cons want to limit the definition of family based on prejudice and bigotry. They cannot or will not see how biased their rationale is.

The State Constitution should protect the rights of the people. It should not take them away. Two questions for Prop 8 supporters: What have gay people ever done to you? When gay people get married, exactly how does it damage your marriage?

Some people want to alter the definition to fit their own agendas. If you believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, prop 8 should be passed. If not it should be defeated. This something each individual state should decide.

I don't have a huge problem with being denied rights that are afforded to straight couples. My taxes should be lowered accordingly because if I can't adopt children or get the same legal benefits of marriage, then I don't have to pay for the costs associated. No schools. No playgrounds. None of that crap. All goes on the heads of the people who would be allowed those rights. Once that happens, marriage will be opened up to everyone because the parents won't like footing the bill for everything. They need our money but don't want us in their neighborhoods!

Gays and lesbians should not have their civil rights bandied about as if the straights are handing them to us like scraps from the massuhs table. We sho do look purty when we strut our stuff down the aisle. Those po' straight folk don't want none of that, course. I reckon, eventually we will win our rights, once them Republikans get booted outta office and Barack wins.

It irritates me to no end that people think that gay marriage will radically alter the way in which society functions. Furthermore, we need to accept that Obama will not help us with our demands to gain recognition and rights for all.
