“We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded,” he said.
"Taxpayers should be concerned about where the expansion of a “civilian national security force,” David Williams, vice president of policy for Citizens Against Government Waste."
I am personally more concerned about the US becoming a police state

By definition, I would think the purpose of a "security force" is to enforce existing law.

I wonder if it's based on the groups of religious men in major cities that have taken it on themselves to operate as a security force in certain areas? It's obviously not the National Guard.
I prefer for ordinary citizens to exercise their rights guaranteed by the second amendment to the U.S. Constitution, myself.
As Samuel Adams posited, everyone should be taught firearm safety and skill. Studies suggest about 97% of the time just showing a firearm to a would-be evildoer sends them packing with no shots fired.
Maybe we'll return to the practices of the 1960s and let kids learn marksmanship in school. It builds discipline, teaches safety and responsibility, and prepares them to aid in the defense of their communities.
I think it's like sex--when it's off-limits, it just adds to the appeal. -

If this were WWII (to which cons have repeatedly compared Iraq and the alleged war on terror) then Obama's comments would be dead on and war cheerleaders well know this. Keep talking about defense all you want. Just remember that Bush lied and told you that you could burn through billions of our tax dollars paying the same people over and over to fight and rebuild Iraq while you sat back on your azz and got paid spare change to spread lies and propaganda on the Internets. That is according to an Investor’s Business Daily (IBD) article on Obama’s “Universal Voluntary Public Service.”
I read about Obama’s plans for a Civilian National Security Forcea few weeks ago and it sent chills up my spine….This man’s racial politics and “social change” agenda are dangerous for this country.
This policy described at IBD is full leftist program to bribe our youth with money and then indoctrinate them into a “hate-America, community-organizing, America is oppressive” mindset….basically teach them to be radicals and “social entrenpreneurs”.
And it may not stop there….

Apparently this commentator only read the 30-second sound bite. If one looks into the context of the statement, Obama plans to double the Peace Corps' budget by 2011, and expand AmeriCorps, USA Freedom Corps, VISTA, YouthBuild Program, and the Senior Corps. Plus, he proposes to form a Classroom Corps, Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, Veterans Corps, Homeland Security Corps, Global Energy Corps, and a Green Jobs Corps.
Yes, "chilling".

Good question for Obama….
I think your question really points out the inconsistency of Obama.
On one hand he encourages government service and says we need a civilian force the size of the existing military….if that is the case in terms of sheer dollars, we are talking about a $500 billion force….that is a huge chunk of tax dollars for this “civilian service” idea.
If everyone is working for the government, it is difficult to tell where the tax dollars will come from to support the program.
Of course, similar things could be said about most of Obama’s programs…."-

Here's an idea: Obama can partner with the NRA to teach firearms safety and skill to everyone who is able and interested. And then we can have monthly practice so we all keep our edge (a lot of us would choose to do it more often because we enjoy the recreational aspects, of course). School kids could operate like they did in the "good old days" and have practice after school or in physical education (do they still teach that?).

Maybe he'll take the time to learn the difference between a military assault rifle and the semi-automatic sporting rifles listed on the AWB. And he might even learn why we have the physical features we have--for safety and useability.

All youths were forced to join Hitler's Youth Group - it became the law because the everyone did not sign up when it was voluntary.
At first, they were building bridges, fixing roads, helping poor people, repairing dwellings for poor people.
Then they were given wood rods as fake rifles, to march with and learn military discipline.
Then the SS would send out teams to look over the youth group members to pick out boys to be in the SS. - Strong, ayran.
The rest were sent to work in armament and ammunition factories.
Eventually they were drafted.
What bothers me is the MANDATED public service. Who determines what is public service?

Everybody should serve the community. Everybody. The inherent nature of community is that everybody gives, and everybody gets. To many takers, not enough givers, and you no longer have a community, just a collection of self-serving individuals.
I serve my community voluntarily, but I see no reason why children shouldn't be gotten into the habit early on.

The feds got those tanks from somewhere, in this case a nearby army base. And somebody had to drive the damned things, ATF goons are not trained to do so. It had to be army personnel in the tanks at Waco. That was a breach of posse commitatus. And who was the base commander who so freely, and illegally loaned out his equipment and his men? This is the proof Delta forces were active at Waco. I found this series of videos because I had done a search on Hillary Clinton. I watched the first one, no Hillary, second one......it's not until the last one that Hillary is tied into the story. This clip is part 7, the interviews that, in my mind, gave credence to the entire thing start in part 8.

Yes, after I thought we had a chance to kill off the anti-first amendment faith-based B.S., and Obama wants to extend it. He and Palin (and Bush) are religiously very similar. No reason to vote for Obama if I value my first amendment rights. I think this is what will eventually undermine the U.S. It's insidious and sounds so sweet.

Give your time to the causes that you feel strongly in. If you feel strongly that New Orleans has been forgotten by our government go help there. If you feel strongly on pro-life, go volunteer your services there. The more the citizens in this country give to their community (and I strongly urge you to use your TIME, not just your money) the less the government would be obligated to do.
It isn't enough for me to tell my children that they should think of others in the decisions that they make about their own lives. You can't make a decision about the worth of needy unless, you experience what they are going through. My children are required to volunteer at the agency or office of their choice, but they are required to volunteer.
One of my daughters volunteers with me at a homeless shelter for battered women. One of my sons volunteers at assisted living facility, another does taxes for the poor, and my 12 year olds collect books for the literacy programs in our area.
My financial contribution to these very educational requirements for my children--gas money. The value to my children's perspective of citizenship is priceless.

Home protection and self defense isn't about having anyone look down the barrel of a gun--unless they are coming for you.
As the Dalai Lama has stated in his own Bradyesque way, "If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun.” I'd add that this also applies to someone using a knife, other object, or body parts to try to kill you as well.
Our founders made this a top priority. Do you think maybe they had some experience Obama lacks? I think so.
Don't mix up Bush's Iraq attack with ordinary citizens' natural right to keep and bear arms for self-defense. They have absolutely nothing to do with each other, and lots of people experienced some serious cognitive dissonance about Iraq. -

I have read all of the emails from Law Enforcement & Military personnel about Barack Obama's rudeness and
what seems to be disgust for basically anyone in uniform. Well, it's
my turn to add to the list of emailers and here it is:
So members of the Calhoun County Sheriff's
Department, Michigan State Police, (me included) and other local
agencies inside Calhoun County are working with Secret Service in the
security of Mr. Obama. Mr. Obama's bus arrives in Battle Creek and
pulls into the stadium area. Before Mr. Obama exits the bus, he has
the Secret Service get off and tell all Law Enforcement personnel in
uniform that they now have to stand behind the bus so Mr. Obama is
not seen with anyone in a Law Enforcement uniform before he gets off
or while in the public view. So, everyone from Michigan State Police,
Sheriff's Deptments and other agencies look at each other for a brief
second, go and stand behind the bus out of sight so Mr. Obama does
not have to see, or been seen with, what to him is 'undesirables'
since he refuses to be seen , or even acknowledge Military or Law
Enforcement personnel in uniform. And he wants to be our
commander-in-chief!
At a time of war and terrorism in our world,
this presidental candidate who is being protected by various branches
r on TV. The TV news doesn't show us marching around behind the
bus. In the future, look and see if you can see a single soldier or
police officer in uniform when you see Obama. Why? I wonder what
the story or media frenzy would be if it was Muslims, blacks, whites,
Jews, or any other race, gender, religon, and/or occupation, that Mr.
Obama refused to be seen with or have around him.
Why would I make this up? Everyone in Law
Enforcement knows we have traditionally had more funding under
Democrats.

The reason Obama is not to be seen with Law Enforcement officers is so that he won't be easily picked out by anyone that want to do him harm. Besides anyone can pose as a Police Officer and get real close to Obama. They aren't taking any chances. The Secret Service you don't them from the crowd, so Obama is somewhat shielded. Talk about dumb, you guys takes the cake.

It's an interesting idea; I'm not sure why we can't already do this with existing groups, such as the National Guard. Maybe someone will explain it to me.
I'm not really for a new program, unless there's a clear indication of how it will be paid for. I don't mind the concept of serving your country for a college education.
Once again...it needs to be paid for and I'm not really interested in another government program.-

I believe Obama's Civilian Security Force, will be something like the underground "Resistance Force" during WWII, but under a different mission. No one will know who they are. They will be operating under TOP SECRET here at home. They will be Homeland Spies checking out questionable characters. The only thing you will know is that we have such a Force, and that's all, everything will be TOP SECRET.
