Why are the dumbocrat liberals fighting this fight again? It was settled years ago (the 60s and 70s) by the Supreme Court. Guess who where the ones fighting that it was free speech? The dumbocrat liberals. You can not have it both ways. As it has been said before, What you say may make my blood boil, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it. Grow up!

It's offensive in either situation, but there's a hell of a lot more history of the 'lynchings' of black men in US history than anyone white. It takes on horrificly racist overtones in one case and it's offensive in general in the other case.

Christian Conservatives claim that American Democrats are degenerates.

And yet ... a large portion of Christian Conservatives and Republicans curiously wind up seeking Homosexual thrills ... Tom Foley, Ted Haggerd, Jimmy Swaggert, that guy in the toilet stall ... ... ... oh ... ... ... this list could go on forever. -

Christian Conservatives will always rationalize lynching because the foundation of the American Christian Conservative Movement grew out of the collective rage against the Civil Rights Movement.
Reply
White Pentecostal Church goers ... mystified at their world being radically changed ... sought solace at their small town churches.
The preachers advocated for their flock by opposing Lyndon Johnson ... and a coalition was born ... the Republican Party and Christian Conservatives ... together ... fighting against Civil Rights, fighting against Peace in Vietnam ... and the fight goes on today.
Sure, it's the essence of Moral Vacancy ... but what would anyone expect from this merger?

I personally believe that the Right Wing Extremists on this page will say any lie, promote any division ... for the purpose of promoting chaos around the political candidate they oppose.
Reply
This is a classic political practice.
It's been done for ages.
The fact that my fellow Christian Conservatives are becoming increasingly shrill in their mock outrage ... only tells me that ... it's simply not working.
And the reason it's not working is that America can see through the BS ... and America sees Obama as a sincere, Christian, moral human ... as opposed to Johnny Shapeshifter ... who will literally say anything to get elected.

Christian Conservatives call Obama a Socialist.

But they are mum about the most obvious example of Socialism our nation has seen in 60 years ... the George W. Bush Bailout.
This tells me that they are political opportunists ... and patently Morally Vacant. -

Nixie ... one of the most vicious of posters ... along with FSUgrad .... oh and aniokley .... and GLee ... oh ... and RedRiver ... oh ... and .... well .... most all of you ... say vicious, sick, degrading, morally vacant comments on a regular basis ... and when someone from the left responds in kind, ... you zero in on the respondent and demand an apology!

In fact, I would not be surprised if that wasn't why redtomato was banned ... as this member consistently said the most vile, disrespectful comments to people who were only proffering their opinion.
This then .... this .... is why America is turning Her back on you ... all you know is attack ... all you know is Fear and Smear.
Sure, it's a bona fide, Machiavellian method of winning elections ... but, when that's all you put up year after year after year ... Americans become hip to the Fundamental Moral Vacancy.
Personally, I think y'all been married to the Moral Perversion and Fundamental Hypocrisy of the Modern Republican Party so long ... you've completely lost your moral compass.

You know ... I'd like to point out to y'all that it was only 19 years ago that the last black man was lynched.
Reply
Did you hear me?
In 1989, the last recorded black man was lynched ... for being black.
Racism runs deep in this country.
The fact that none of you seem to 'get' the gravity of 'mock lynchings' only validates my point that the Modern American Christian Conservative Movement is ... at thecore ... founded upon the fight AGAINST Civil Rights in the South. I personally believe that it's an endemic suspicion ... an Intolerance for anything slightly different that binds this 'Movement' together.
Now, I know you are good people. And I know that you can't possibly be the Crazy Extremists you promote yourselves to be.
I know that if I met you face to face, I would like you and we would get along fine.... well except FSU92grad ... (I actually believe he's a little prick ... but that's just my interpretation of his insult based commentary.)
But you have to understand ... America needs to move past the blind, ignorant hatred that is the origin of the Christian Conservative Movement.
I believe that racism does at least as much harm to the racist hater as it does to the object of the racist's hatred.
And don't kid yourself .... racism has harmed our nation deeply.
You know, in France, where racism was never nearly the issue it has been in America ... blacks and whites work together.
I believe the best thing that could happen to this country is for Barack Obama to become president so that America can turn the page on the Racial Hatred and Love for War that defines the Modern American Christian Conservative Movement.
Don't you agree, in your heart of hearts, that calling yourselves Christians, and harboring such hatred, hypocrisy, and Moral Vacancy, you demean the essential message of Love that Jesus taught?
I hope you agree.

Why are they comparing the comments of the authorities and the comments of the person who hung the effigy of Palin? Why don't they compare authorities with authorities?
I'm pretty sure the person who hung the effigy of Obama thought it was art too.

if america had a sad, sordid history of hanging white women from trees, then the Palin effigy would be terrible and everyone would be outraged.
but we don't have that history.
we have a history of lynching black men.

Not a surprise there, Palin is art, Obama racist. What do you expect from the news media that did re runs on Obambi's 30 minute INFOmercial. They are choosing our President for us. We are being bamboozled. If the authorities sit on their butts and let this voter fraud, the illegal shady campaign contributions go, radical associations go, shame on them, unfortunately we the masses will pay the ultimate price of being robbed of our liberties and our life savings. OLD JOE HAS ALREADY DROPPED THAT TAX LIMIT. Stay tuned for more drops in the tax limit. 40 thousand dollars a year is coming soon!!!!

Did you know that shrub borrowed $600 bill-$1 trill.from social security funds to cover your tax rebate checks you got ?
Reply
What do you call that.
And he was not the first to do this.
In Canada our social security went bankrupt in the 80's due too the same thing, then again in the 90's, no repercussions though; but if private industry does anything to pension funds, off to jail with them.
As Mark Knoppler said in a song "when you point your finger, you have 3 more pointing back at you"
Redistributing the wealth has been going on for decades, it is not a new idea by Obama, just a different way of doing it.
shrub and others taking from pension funds are taking from mainstreet to cover programs, Obama bringing taxes for the rich back to the 1990 era is trying to give it back to mainstreet.
And as McC said himself in the primaries, he voted with shrub 90% of the time, so more of the same sounds realistic.

If your stating that "Whites" can be the victim of "Hate crimes" the answer is absolutely!
Reply
This is not just a theoretical possibility, It is a real problem that occurs frequently. Do I believe that it's ok, or that minorities should get a "Pass" just because they are a member of a particular group? Again the answer is NO.
Remember an Effigy is a symbol. symbols have meaning. .
Someone could spay paint something on my garage door and I will consider it vandalism, Someone could spay paint that same thing on someone else's door garage door, and it could make them fear for their life.
History matters!
I have very little patience for :Hate speech" no matter where it comes from, while I personally do not believe Palin is ready to be president, I certainly wish her no ill will. Is OK for someone to hang an Effigy of Palin, the answer is No.

This is an interesting situation, if we take the time to analyze our own reactions to it.
Reply
My original emotion was one of disgust over the hanging Obama, and the hanging Palin didn't elicit the same response.
Palin's was part of a larger display that included a burning McCain... it seemed related to the party. It also didn't seem to make the statement that Palin SHOULD be hung or McCain SHOULD be burned. Maybe that's because this was set up as a Hallowe'en display, and the "artist" was not afraid to be identified.
Compare this to the hanging Obama, which seems to be anonymous, and not part of any larger display. Maybe it's the rhetoric that's been flying around for the last few months of campaigning, or the 2 foiled assassination plans so far, but this is more of a suggestion than a joke. It's almost as though the anonymous "artist" is saying that Obama should be strung up. It also has too many echoes of historical racism for comfort.
So far as I know, white women haven't been hung, and old white men haven't been burned in chimneys (Santa excluded), yet many black men were strung up and left hanging in trees in the nation's past.
Is there a double standard? Yes. I think there is. And the first stage is admitting it. The second step is not to condone the hanging Obamas, but to condemn the hanging Palins.-

You know, I tried - in vain - to find something partisan in your analysis in order to neg it and post a scathing reply. But I couldn't. And with that in mind I applaud the rhetoric and appreciate the post, thanks. And besides, after this submission made the Top Stories, this just isn't any fun any longer. G'nite.

I first heard about the palin hanging mannequin on MSNBC, where Keith Olbermann condemned it. Every time I saw it on any of the news shows, they condemned it. Why is this even an issue? Because the idiot who put it up called it something else? I'm sure the kid who put up the Obama effigy didn't call it a disgusting example of bad taste, but it was!

I find them BOTH VERY DISTASTEFUL... that being said.. one party hung the effigy on his property and took credit for doing so.... and as least offered a half-assed defense of why....
Reply
the other did his act in the middle of the night on a college campus and was not proud enough to stick around and defend his actions....
both in my opinion are very distasteful.. but the LIB at least had the balls to defend his actions.. the CON .. hid in the middle of the night.. -

I'm white, and even I can see the difference between the two effigies. For decades Southernors lyched blacks and hung them from trees while the town (or rather the whites in the town) used it as a social occasion. If my memory is correct, the KKK got its most dynamic start in of all places southern Indiana, which borders on Kentucky where I am GUESSING kkk activity was pervasive. Hanging Obama or any effigy of an Afro-American can never be looked at as art because of this lynching history and the fact that it is easy to see that it may be more than against Obama, it may be directed to the entire black race. These states are working hard to overcome racial discord in their cities, so the strong reaction to me goes along with that effort.
Reply
Hanging Palin in effigy is to me a whole different matter. There is no national history of white lynchings that the effigy could be a reminder of, and Palin herself is a bigot. Her effigy is actually hanging the bigotry she so clearly represents. That is part of the reason she thinks small towns are the true America, while city folk in Blue Areas pay 92% of our tax revenue. Small towns in the heartland of America are almost always pure white with maybe one token black family. I should know, I grew up in one, and got the hell out as soon as I could and never regretted the decision. -

Juvenile people do such things on Halloween--and also do it to make political statements.
Reply
I remember being at a location where Nixon had been carried down the street in effigy and was being burned in a bonfire. My father thought it was horrific, and I just thought it was juvenile.
The best way to approach something like this is to ignore it and not give them the attention they crave. They want to show disrespect for the person and then get people to react--that's the whole point. It's obviously racism and sexism, but there is no reasoning with juvenile, bigoted minds. -

I personally despise hate speech and racism a lot more then mindless idiocy of calling hanging of effigies "fun", but last time I checked even Nazis had the freedom to be as hateful as they want on their own property.
