Be fair. He was speaking with an accent. Over the phone it might have been difficult to be sure what he was saying. I had some trouble listening to it myself. . I can understand that she didn't want to offend him in case he was the person he claimed to be.

The really scary part is that she has an ego so large that she never stopped to wonder if the president of France would call her directly. The doubt would have made her cautious. Then the correct response might have been "I'm sorry this is a bad connection and I really want to talk to you. Why don't you give me your number and I will call you right back."-

True, but Montreal has a different area code than France. Besides, Alaska being next to Canada (as she mentioned when she claimed vast foreign policy experience), she could have known that French aren't the only ones who speak with a French accent.
Other celebrities have also fallen victim to these two pranksters, but there were quite a few clues in the discussion that should have made her suspicious.
