Palin would have gone on for another 5 or 10 minutes if not for the pranksters giving themselves up. If she didn't catch on when the 'President' started talking about Hustler's video, "Nailin' Palin" being an edgy documentary, she was never going to catch on.

"As noted by one political commentator, it appears Palin's phone calls are vetted about as well as McCain vetted Palin."

    Sadly true

since her foreign policy experience hinges on her proximity to and dealings with russian and canada, shouldn't she have known the name of the canadia prime minister?

To be fair, Sarah Palin was pawned by 2 masterful comedians. Of course, she should have known Stephen Harper is the Canadian PM. Besides, Governor Palin was a good sport up to the very end. Way to go, CKOI!

Her aides/staff are largely to blame here...this call should have never gotten through to Gov. Palin.

Palin, in her interview with Katie Couric stated that she has foreign policy experience due to her proximity to Russia and also said,

"Well, it certainly does because our-- our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of."

Since she is citing that as foreign policy experience, one would think she knows a little bit about her next door neighbors of Russia and Canada. Little things, like who the Prime Minister of Canada is. Stephen Harper isn't exactly a hard name to remember.

You can certainly blame her aides/staff for the call getting through, but there are one or two hints in the conversation where she might have gotten a clue:

MA: I just love killing those animals. Mm, mm. Take away a life - that is so fun!

MA: Yes. You know, we have a lot in common also because, except that from my house I can see Belgium. That's kind of less interesting than you.

MA: That's the, uh, thing I said to my great friend, the Prime Minister of Canada, Stef Carse (Canada's PM is Stephen Harper)

MA: You know my wife is a popular singer and a former hot top model. And she's so hot in bed. She even wrote a song for you.

MA: Yes, yes I understand. We have, uh, the equivalent of their Joe the Plumber in France. It's called "Marcel the Guy with Bread Under His Armpit". Oui.

And when the guy started singing the Joe the Plumber song...

Let's face it, she was so busy gushing over the fact that she thought the Prez of France called her, she didn't listen to what he was saying. This could be slight problem when dealing with foreign leaders. She has no right to be in a position of authority.

People need to stop making excuses for this pathetic performance and blaming her staff.

If she had any knowledge of Canada - her next door neighbor - or the president of France - one of our allies - she would have caught on.

What was particularly sad was that she probably would have continued to talk if the two comedians hadn't got bored with the prank.

I would love to see Jack Cafferty's take on this.

It was funny to hear. She did something dumb like this at one of her rallies- the crowd started to boo and she made a remark about "soldiers fighting for their 1st Amendment rights to do so"... she's so ignorant that she didn't realize the brainwashed CONS were reacting to her comments favorably.

Yeah, it was a good prank. But I think it's funnier how all the immaturity follows. I'm sure Palin was thinking "What a nut case." and she did the her best to go along with him. She had to.

Be fair, people. She was trying to be polite because she really thought this was the President of France and she didn't want to say anything to offend him The accent was heavy and he was difficult to understand in some places.
Her only real "crime" is having an ego so large that she really believes the President of France might call her directly. The doubt would have made her cautious. The reply then might have been, "Sir,this is a bad connection, and I really would like to talk to you. Please give me your number and I will call you right back."

You know you can learn a lot about a person by how they behave when under a dynamical situation they have to react to unexpected turn of events. I of course cannot approve a prank , its malicious in nature although it serves a point here and it serves it well.

Of course she should have been able to react to it during the conversation. There were several hints. And the problem is that she went along with it and did not for a moment take the initiative to start asking the other "person" questions that would provide her with verification she was under a prank. You see you can defeat a prank if you realize what is going on in advance and then step by step expose the pranker by asking the questions you want. Like where he lives. What school he went to and other personal biographical details (Sarkozy i mean) that would provide her staff with the capability to expose it midway. All those statements about killing animals and his wife being hot are unacceptable and uncharacteristic of a world leader and definite hints . You would never expect someone to talk like that . That comment about the x rated video is also an ultimate hint as well as the statement about Belgium. Paris for example or most major French cities that relate to central government are so far from Belgium borders. You cant obviously not know where Sarkozy (the leader i mean here any leader) is typically living in relation to the borders of the country. Therefore the immediate response to a statement like that is to ask him where is his home ? He would have then to come up with an answer that provides a home near the border. The point is she would be able to go on the attack and start asking the questions that would make the pranker get creative or produce errors . She failed at all those steps. Those are common sense points you expect from a potential leader. They have to be flexible and able to adapt and engage the situation forcefully.

Yet the most significant failure is in the end. She retreated in the end. She should have not retreated. She should have been aware that all this is recorded and go on the attack after first accepting the fact she was indeed pranked even amused by it. There is no shame in errors. The shame is hidden in how you react to them. She didnt go on the offense . She did not offer a finishing statement about the whole event that would render intact her integrity and capacity to respond under stress . Not in the form of humour or a serious punishing tone. No, what happened instead is that shame took over and retreat prevailed. Like a deer in the headlights. A real leader is not only able to recognize patterns of deceipt but even when faced with a "crisis" remains focused and able to adjust .

Do you know its illegal to tape someone without either their agreement or alerting them about it? At least in principle. Palin should know that and should immediately laugh at the pranker giving him whatever partial credit for the joke and then right away instead of retreating go on the offense ask his real name and details and go on an attack of her own about her rights as participant in the prank. A leader is never defeated in a permanent way. A leader does have the final say . She never finished this . They did. Who are you? Who you work with? They will hear from me and the real Sarkozy and the joke will be on you buddy for wasting valuable resources and exploiting one's name in such manner ! But yes you got me now because although i realized some potential problems with your style of talk i remained diplomatic about it trying to derive further information about you . Thats what a good at heart open minded person does and the joke is on the pranker then. No shame in not knowing someone's voice. But it is how you handle it after it has started to become funny. She should have known this will end in the public domain and remained focused , alert of the fact that past the joke revelation she is now talking to the world people that will eventually get this on the tape! You do want a leader to be flexible , prepared and strong like that.

I say no to such potential leader. The world is in a state where critical thinking , intellect and integrity of character , determination and persistence to prevail and defend what is proper and important are necessary qualities of a leader. There is no shame in error . But there is shame in not having what it takes to respond properly to it and maintain your edge.

The problem with Palin is that in the end its not as much important to remember or know a name of a political leader. No, that is not the determinant of experience. Sure it helps and implies a prior working relationship or interest that should matter at some level as positive but it remains superficially positive if thats all there is to it. However the true quality one is looking is that of the ability to form logical connections and deduce from those important facts. The inability to produce such connections implies a deeper problem than that of simply not knowing a name. It implies that you have no clue about issues of importance that are hidden behind names , real relationships and concepts like where places in the world are, how they relate to each other and what is the history behind them. A gaffe is less important than what it exposes.
