RickyDawkins: "people take this presidential stuff wayyy to seriously..."
Reply
I hope you are joking Ricky. After all, it's only the future of your country, and to some extent the world, that's at stake here.
I just can't understand why Americans put up with these election machines? How much do they cost? What do they achieve? Is the tabulation of the results faster than with paper ballots? I don't think so. We have our results within hours, and the 2000 election results were delayed for weeks. What's even worse is that they breed distrust and hostility among the people.
Has anyone ever done a cost/benefit analysis on them? I doubt it. Otherwise they probably would have been thrown out long ago. -

If people took it seriously then over 1.2 million Iraqis might still be alive as well as over 4,ooo fine young Americans dead due to Dumya's lies!
Lost pensions, lost health care, lost homes, increased suicide, lost lives to needless wars... thanks to the Repugs! Repugs only concerned about losing a little money need to see the reality that it is a "life or death" issue!
No leader in history ever dropped taxes during a war, except Dumya to damn our economy too! -

Oprah is just reminding them to pay attention. They went to electronic in the first place because paper ballots are not foolproof--humans end up getting even more involved, and that's never an improvement.
In this election, I'm not crazy about the candidates, since both are planning to continue or expand church-state entanglement, which I oppose, and I'm strongly for both gay rights and the second amendment.
At least these bozos aren't Bush.

As much as it sickens me, at least NOW people will pay attention to the fact that those GD machines have screwed with the vote for eight years! No one would listen, the CONS wouldn't investigate when they had all the power, the democrats were too stupid to make it a big issue after 06. But NOW, because someone with some influence experienced it.....NOW it will be an issue. Gawd, that pi**es me off!

Have you forgotten? In the last election, most all the exit polls were saying KERRY winning by a land slide. So your exit poll idea is WORTHLESS TRIPE!
Exit Polls, the UN, Liberals...you're all kookoo!
Another point.
If you really beleive the republicans are able to win the elections by cheating, then how do you figure Obama or any Democrat will ever win another election? So by your theory of Repub election theft, you Dems are going to lose this election too.
So Sorry, Dems lose again!

I can see it now; these jerks are probably getting scared. Will they have to "adjust" the machines again to correct their fix?
I have seen these machines hop from one selection to another non-selected candidate. Enough Americans have witnessed this crap.

I'm a fairly peaceable man until you steal my countries constitutional government, and replace it with the bought and paid for neocon trash !!!!!!!!!!
2000 was not acceptable, 2004 was the fire that started the boil, 2008 will be the explosion that happens when steam is pressurized beyond the capacity of the vessel holding it. Kind of like a boiler letting loose, it will shake this nation !!!!!
There is the safety valve, a fair election !!!!
If McCain wins it honestly, I won't like it !!! But I'll live with it !!!!!!
But since the odds of that happening are about the same of us getting out of Iraq if he is elected. I'd say we should see Obama declared the winner right after the polls close in Hawaii -

Here in Maryland we are doing away with the voting machines all together. We haven't even finished paying for them yet. I don't understand why they can't put a little printer on the machine that will print out your votes, you can then sign them and deposit them in a box like we did our original voting cards then you would have a verifiable recount source.

Absolutely! They have promised to do just that here in N.J. but sadly allegedly for budgetary reasons it has been postponed until Jan. (After the presidential election which blatantly sucks...) though if McCain wins here it will be too obvious a fraud, most of us NJ residents would cut off our hands before using them to "pull the lever" for a Republican fear mongering totalitarian piece of dung.

Well you should not sign them, because it is suppose to be a secret ballot. But I agree, you should have to show a positive ID, You can use a computer if you want, but the end result would be a slip or page of paper that is scanned. The scanners would have to be verified by members of both parties. Or they could be hand counted.
Reply
This could be a very simple system, but the key is the paper ballot that is human readable. -

Tchef; Do you remember the 2000 Election? Al Gore won that election fair and square, but Bushed cryed and said my brother in Florida said I was the winner, then all the crap we had to go thaough for days, and they gave it to Bush even after they found boxes of Al Gores votes strung up and down the ocean bank beside phone boths and other places there were boxes of his votes that they just put along the road side and every where. I sure hope this does not end up another one of those days, That was wrong very wrong, but I think people like you and I are aware fo those days and maybe, just maybe there won't be another day like that again. Because they well do what ever that got to, to make our vote not count.

tchef, the problems with mistakes and fraud were huge with paper and are probably less with the electronic machines. But the conspiracy theorists are hot on this.

And I agree, there is nothing stopping them from doing this. The programming would be straightforward, and it would be much better than the paper ballots.

Of course one should always be...vigilant about fraud. It's a buyer-beware situation, really.

In New York City, where I live, one registers one's vote using a very primitive mechanical contraption: you push a large lever to open the curtains of the both, mark your choices by flipping small levers allowing X's to pop up in actual tiny windows opposite candidates' names, then seal the deal by returning the lever to it's original position, which also opens the curtains so you can exit. Very 1954.
I've often wondered: is any of this connected to anything? The mechanical sounds of the machine are impressive, but...
I mean, what's the means by which the votes are actually recorded?
I'll accept all answers.-

I believe those mechanical devices have a good record, we used them in NJ until 2004, the reason for the switch? allegedly repairs were too costly. The E machines we use now are wholly unreliable and 1st year computer students at Princeton were able to hack them in under 60 seconds, let alone the likelihood of the manufacturer's collusion with the GOP. I would feel much better about using the mechanical machines than these ridiculous no paper trail touch screens- incidentally could it really cost more to maintain those older mechanical machines
Reply
than purchase these democracy prevention devices? NO! These machines cost over 4,000 apiece dollars to buy, but the cost of the (not optional) service that makes them work provided from the manufacturer doubles the cost. These things are just another example of the rape of America by GOP apocalyptic, bathroom-sex-seeking, wackjobs.
Have a look at what happened in Maryland, they are dumping the things even though they wasted a fortune on them.

I have used those machines, they click counters in the rear depending which leaver you pushed down. The counters were manually read and logged at the end of the day. This was basically a mechanical calculator. I have no idea how reliable they are, but I suspect they were.

Where I live in VA, we have two kinds of voting. There are several touch screen voting machines, and the lines are always empty. Our people don't like them. We also have paper ballots that are read by a machine. If our vote is within a few percentage points the actual paper ballots are counted, for verification. Then they report the numbers for each precinct.
Reply
But the paper ballots are counted and verified anyway after that, just to be sure that the machines were accurate.
Our district is doing away with the touch screens because we refuse to use them.
Also we have co registrars, one democrat and one republican.

Why would a representative ask Oparah why she was going back to check her ballad? That does not even sound right. That sounds like she was not given privacy. That could be looked upon as harassment in a different scenario.
Reply
I went back to double check my selections. Doesn't everyone? If a worker came over to ask me why I was going back, I would be offended and probably feel like I was being rushed.
If you are not diligent and double check who you have voted for, then you probably don't need to be voting in the first place.
And if the poll workers are asking why your going back to check your selections, then they are not doing anything to help you. They are hindering your time at the booth and I think that is very disturbing. -

Actually i don't think many of the poll workers are really volunteers.. Here, everyone who works the polls are paid 120.00 for the day!

That said, regardless of whether it voluntarily or paid, it's their job to assist voters.. The problem probably comes in when they know you're not voting for their party!

It will be more than interesting Tuesday night. Even though I know Obama currently holds 53% of all votes and has more than clinched the electoral votes, I'm anxious that somehow they will announce McCain as the winner. Here in Texas, a historic red state has turned blue over the last 2 weeks in early historic voter turnout. Obama leads at 53%. If they announce McCain as the winner, it will get ugly, real ugly..

Texas will go for McCain. If Obama wins Texas we are approaching about 460 electoral votes for Obama. His realistic ceiling is about 400. Early voting is a sign of enthusiasm, not how the actual vote will go. Normally Republicans lead. The current early-voting numbers suggest that the Democratic Party will have a higher turnout then the Republican.

What you are saying may be true but still not reflect the truth. What kind of responses you get depends to a large extent on whom you call and to a smaller extent on what kinds of questions you ask. Were you taking a random sample of registered or likely voters? (BTW, random doesn't mean haphazard.)

That's just one poll. Zogby has McCain up by one point and Rasmussen has Obama up by five. So McCain wouldn't be coming back from a double digit deficit. And he's gaining momentum. So it is possible that McCain could pull off a victory.
Reply
Also, McCain is within four points of Obama in Pennsylvania, according to Rasmussen. McCain just might pull it off. -
