Um, your personal opinion notwithstanding, I design software and if it's not something very specialized, you design with the stupidest person possible in mind. We're dealing with first-time voters and Luddite voters who don't have a clue about computers in the first place.
Reply
It's disgraceful design.
I don't think there is anything fraudulent going on, because there wouldn't be any indication on the touch-screen anything was wrong in the first place. This is bad UI design.-

There is widespread complaints about the touch screen voting machines. People have had problems with these voting machines in the last election in Ohio and Florida and now this one in WV, Tennessee, Texas, and Illinois. I hope that if Obama does get elected that the first thing that the new congress does is outlaw these voting machines without a paper trail.

I hope you are joking Ricky. After all, it's only the future of your country, and to some extent the world, that's at stake here.
I just can't understand why Americans put up with these election machines? How much do they cost? What do they achieve? Is the tabulation of the results faster than with paper ballots? I don't think so. We have our results within hours, and the 2000 election results were delayed for weeks. What's even worse is that they breed distrust and hostility among the people.
Has anyone ever done a cost/benefit analysis on them? I doubt it. Otherwise they probably would have been thrown out long ago.-

To put this in perspective, human and mechanical errors generally far outweigh electronic ones. Most of the newer machines don't spit out the card until you successfully register your vote, so it just takes watchful election judges to make sure you don't leave your card in the machine.

Oprah is just reminding them to pay attention. They went to electronic in the first place because paper ballots are not foolproof--humans end up getting even more involved, and that's never an improvement.

The democrats did make an issue in the states that they had control of. The problem was the lack of a viable alternative.
Here is a voting machine in WV that keeps losing it's calibration and has to be fixed but after recalibration it still flips votes from Obama to McCain.

I was speaking of the democrats at the federal level. This isn't a states issue, as what one state does or doesn't do affects the entire nation. The republicans addressed 'voter fraud' at a federal level to take the heat off of their pals machines. In their new 'law', if you register to vote & your name doesn't match exactly with data bases it is compared with, your registration gets thrown out. So if your SS# has your full name spelled out, and you put your first name, middle initial, and last name on the registration, you don't vote.

Exit polls are garbage. Too many people refuse to talk to the pollsters. Of those that do many lie to them for a variety of reasons. The result is not a random sampling of honest answers.
Reply
That is also true with the polls run now. They are heavy on Democrats. So they have some rules to try and hedge it to a correct number. One of the correction factors is how enthused you are over your candidate. This throws things off. Democrats are enthused by Obama. Republicans are not enthused too much over McCain but will crawl over ground glass to vote against Obama. They do not take that into account.-

Here in Maryland we are doing away with the voting machines all together. We haven't even finished paying for them yet. I don't understand why they can't put a little printer on the machine that will print out your votes, you can then sign them and deposit them in a box like we did our original voting cards then you would have a verifiable recount source.

Absolutely! They have promised to do just that here in N.J. but sadly allegedly for budgetary reasons it has been postponed until Jan. (After the presidential election which blatantly sucks...) though if McCain wins here it will be too obvious a fraud, most of us NJ residents would cut off our hands before using them to "pull the lever" for a Republican fear mongering totalitarian piece of dung.

Well you should not sign them, because it is suppose to be a secret ballot. But I agree, you should have to show a positive ID, You can use a computer if you want, but the end result would be a slip or page of paper that is scanned. The scanners would have to be verified by members of both parties. Or they could be hand counted.

This could be a very simple system, but the key is the paper ballot that is human readable. -

In New York City, where I live, one registers one's vote using a very primitive mechanical contraption: you push a large lever to open the curtains of the both, mark your choices by flipping small levers allowing X's to pop up in actual tiny windows opposite candidates' names, then seal the deal by returning the lever to it's original position, which also opens the curtains so you can exit. Very 1954.
I've often wondered: is any of this connected to anything? The mechanical sounds of the machine are impressive, but...
I mean, what's the means by which the votes are actually recorded?
I'll accept all answers.-

I believe those mechanical devices have a good record, we used them in NJ until 2004, the reason for the switch? allegedly repairs were too costly. The E machines we use now are wholly unreliable and 1st year computer students at Princeton were able to hack them in under 60 seconds, let alone the likelihood of the manufacturer's collusion with the GOP. I would feel much better about using the mechanical machines than these ridiculous no paper trail touch screens- incidentally could it really cost more to maintain those older mechanical machines
Reply
than purchase these democracy prevention devices? NO! These machines cost over 4,000 apiece dollars to buy, but the cost of the (not optional) service that makes them work provided from the manufacturer doubles the cost. These things are just another example of the rape of America by GOP apocalyptic, bathroom-sex-seeking, wackjobs.
Have a look at what happened in Maryland, they are dumping the things even though they wasted a fortune on them.

We have an even older method: a piece of paper and a pencil, with no maintenance costs. Well, the pencils get used up after a few elections and they have to be sharpened once in a while. The system is almost 100% reliable and temper-proof, and results are available within a couple of hours after the polls close. Party representatives observe the count, and a 3rd grader can do the recount, if necessary. -

I may not be just the actual voting machines, but a middle man server that the tallied votes are sent to first, before sending them on to the Sec. of States. Where do these servers exist? In the battleground States of course! If McCain wins it will be by a very thin margin so as to not look obvious. Check out videos on youtube by internet security expert Stanley Spoonamore and regarding the shifty IT guy Michael Connell who was IT man for Rove, Bush and now McCain. Spoonamore predicts a McCain win by 51.5% - stolen votes via middle man server which is untracable. I hope he is wrong.

Where I live in VA, we have two kinds of voting. There are several touch screen voting machines, and the lines are always empty. Our people don't like them. We also have paper ballots that are read by a machine. If our vote is within a few percentage points the actual paper ballots are counted, for verification. Then they report the numbers for each precinct.
Reply
But the paper ballots are counted and verified anyway after that, just to be sure that the machines were accurate.
Our district is doing away with the touch screens because we refuse to use them.

I went back to double check my selections. Doesn't everyone? If a worker came over to ask me why I was going back, I would be offended and probably feel like I was being rushed.
If you are not diligent and double check who you have voted for, then you probably don't need to be voting in the first place.
And if the poll workers are asking why your going back to check your selections, then they are not doing anything to help you. They are hindering your time at the booth and I think that is very disturbing. -

It will be more than interesting Tuesday night. Even though I know Obama currently holds 53% of all votes and has more than clinched the electoral votes, I'm anxious that somehow they will announce McCain as the winner. Here in Texas, a historic red state has turned blue over the last 2 weeks in early historic voter turnout. Obama leads at 53%. If they announce McCain as the winner, it will get ugly, real ugly..

Texas will go for McCain. If Obama wins Texas we are approaching about 460 electoral votes for Obama. His realistic ceiling is about 400. Early voting is a sign of enthusiasm, not how the actual vote will go. Normally Republicans lead. The current early-voting numbers suggest that the Democratic Party will have a higher turnout then the Republican.

Opera didn't operate the voting machine correctly as she was instructed to do. Her vote wasn't counted because she did nopt operate the machine correctly.-

Even people who don't like Oprah know that she isn't dumb. The point is if she made the mistake, others might make it too. She never implied it was a conspiracy of any kind, she just urged people to check the selections over before submitting to avoid a mistake.

I have noticed that most neocons (like 4thchance) use the same sick thinking; they like to blame the victims of crime and corruption for the crime itself to free themselves from taking any responsibility for their lack of concern for their fellow Americans. A sad lot, for sure.

Thank God that even most McCain supporters are embarrassed by them. -

Yes, it is ridiculous that an American would call someone losing their vote "ridiculous" - how Un-American of you! But, typically repug of you, the party of terrorism through torture, eavesopping w/o a warrant, Gitmo and preemptive war for lies!

Yes I am a "reluctant" McCain supporter, as if my avatar wasn't a dead give away. The problem with this "fair play" is that it was so predictable. first the fictitious voter registrations now this idiotic story. In case Obama doesn't win he is setting what ever is necessary to distract america into another supreme battle with hopes for him to come out after winner, post the election rresults.

I hope you guys aren't too disillusioned with the polls that are in Obama's favor. In reality, I have been making calls for the past week and the majority of the people I have talked to are either voting for McCain or are leaning McCain. There haven't been a lot of Obama supporters. This just makes me wonder about the polls.

What you are saying may be true but still not reflect the truth. What kind of responses you get depends to a large extent on whom you call and to a smaller extent on what kinds of questions you ask. Were you taking a random sample of registered or likely voters? (BTW, random doesn't mean haphazard.)

with 2 days and 2 hours to go gallup has Obama up 52 to 41 among all registered voters and 52 to 42 among likely voters.
Reply
say what you want about ACORN but mickey mouse isn't responding to gallup polls.
no one has ever come back from a double digit deficit in the polls at this point in the election.
of course a black man has never asked to be put in charge of all the guns and money before either.
so we shall see.
but I would have trouble believing a mccain win was anything but criminal.-

That's just one poll. Zogby has McCain up by one point and Rasmussen has Obama up by five. So McCain wouldn't be coming back from a double digit deficit. And he's gaining momentum. So it is possible that McCain could pull off a victory.
Reply
Also, McCain is within four points of Obama in Pennsylvania, according to Rasmussen. McCain just might pull it off.-

they and zogby have a 5 point lead today. over a month with a majority of the vote. of course Gore and kerry both had a majority of the popular vote, they just didn't get the election. a fact which i still find baffling and insulting.-

Except Obama already has the electoral votes. The electoral college was set up to make sure national interests that might not be as obvious to the majority were heard (like farmers, who at one time provided all the food for this country and later for many others).

People -- don't post a comment until you read or listen to the whole original source. This was about a voter with a high profile who made a mistake and was using her position with the media to caution other voters to double check their choices before submitting them. End of story.

Wow, there's a dearth of informed discussion on this thread. It's almost enough to make me claim to not be a member of the electorate. Some of you are really, REALLY doing a great disservice to yourselves, your parties, and your country in general.

Sir, I don't think that I'm better than you or others. All I'm saying is that with the possible future of our country at stake take a look at the comments of the people on this thread. Is this really the intelligent kind of debate that will bring about the change that we need in our country? Is this the best we can do? Is it? If it is I weep for our future.

Congress rushed to pass the HELP AMERICA VOTE ACT OF 2002 to replace punch card voting systems
Reply
Even with all of the problems they have failed to correct the problems and in many cases made the situation worse
This is a good site to read about the history of what has been going on in Congress in recent years rearding the voting system
