Monsoon rains and especially their non-appearance have overwhelming impact on Indian agriculture. During drought large parts of India fail to ensure minimum subsistence requirements of farm families and their livestock. Agricultural production in India is instable particularly in drought prone areas which increasingly become subject to desertification. Overcoming these obstacles means large investments to overcome drought incl. development of irrigation, dry farming technology, and cropping-systems improvement.
