Obama: We’ll Bankrupt Any New Coal Plants »
Posted By JaimieM 1 year ago in Business & FinanceThe folks at Naked Emperor News have unearthed another interesting nugget from a Barack Obama interview from months ago. In January 2008, Obama spoke about his approach to global warming and cap-and-trade systems, and he had a warning for anyone foolish enough to invest in coal: bankrupt.

From Obama:
Reply
"So, if somebody wants to build a coal plant, they can — it’s just that it will bankrupt them, because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted."
And the article:
Yesterday, we looked at Obama’s notions of government sending “price signals” to change behavior that it finds objectionable, especially on energy. This is the way Obama intends to do it. Coal provides 49% of domestic electrical power, and any rise in the cost of producing that energy will raise its cost to consumers and reduce the amount produced.-

The only thing I’ve said with respect to coal, I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.
Reply
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.
It’s just that it will bankrupt them. -

Just to explain something to all, whether you believe in greenhouse gas as a problem or not:
Reply
The vast majority o the heating that we observe comes from a single source: the sun.
The reason that the earth isn't 600 degree Fahrenheits is because most of this heat that is generated by the sun baking the earth is radiated into outer space.
The effect of carbon dioxide is to prevent radiation of the heat back into space. The ice caps temper the increased temperature, so that the effect we see isn't vey great. However, if the caps melt, their cooling effect is gone.
EACH 400MW coal burning plant produces 8,000 Tons of Carbon Dioxide A DAY. EACH ONE.
CHINA IS BUILDING 1 A WEEK. -

So your idea is we should follow the Bush lead on Global Warming too. Don't worry about it. All the Fat Cats the Repugs really care about will be dead before it kills life as we know it.

See, that way, even our kids don't have to worry about all the debt you guys have run up with your so-called tax cuts.

This comes as no great shock, pun intended. Obama already called for a 15% reduction in demand for electricity — at the same time he and his allies want transportation to switch from gasoline to electricity. Obama never explained this particular contradiction. How does one switch tens of millions of vehicles from gasoline to electricity while not Increasing demand, let alone by cutting it 15%? And when trying to break free from a recession, the nation will need greater production in energy, not a reduction. -

You had an opportunity for the last 7.5 years that you seemed to have wasted. Why should we believe you are going to do anything going forward?
Reply
We had an opportunity to provide a real candidate in the primaries and look what we have ended up with. Maybe you should be focusing your energies toward a candidate that is more inclined to balance the budget, get the government out of our lives, and put this country back in the direction of growth and leadership. If you think that is McCain, you are part of the problem. -

Obama policy is to support the existing framework and clean coal technology. if we're going to lead the way on clean energy we have to quit building coal plants that kill our environment. and thats what he's saying.
so, obama is not anti-coal, he's just looking to the future, and, like it or not, that future doesn't have a place for coal the way its currently being processed.
so, to put a graph up alluding to the idea that all the people working in the coal industry today are going to be affected by this statement is purely disingenuous since Obama's statement has nothing to do with exisiting coal plants. just future coal plants. in other words, jobs that don't even exist, except in purely speculative discussion.
but keep trying.-

As usual Biden let the cat out of the bag:
Some great rope line video from Joe Biden's recent Ohio swing, where he was asked by an anti-pollution campaigner about clean coal -- a controversial approach in Democratic circles for which Obama has voiced support, particularly during the Kentucky primary.
Biden's apparent answer: He supports clean coal for China, but not for the United States.
"No coal plants here in America," he said. "Build them, if they're going to build them, over there. Make them clean."
"We’re not supporting clean coal," he said of himself and Obama

Let's see if we can't go back a few years and get some stupid comment by McCain to see if we can hang him on it. It seems he has made a few, even recently (bomb, bomb, bomb,..,bomb, bomb Iran).

HEY.. YOU MUST HEAR AND SEE OTHER PARTS OF THIS SAME INTERVIEW!!
Reply
You guys missed some of the other parts of his interview!
He says "electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket"!!
Here is what he said, with a link to it below.
============================
You know, when I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, uh, you know — Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad.
============================
This is the link to it.

So, I guess he's really gonna give people money so they can pay for their electricity bills! -

I bet ALL of the posters here think that Bush was a great president at that the economy is doing just great.
Reply
That we have been on the correct trek to economic security, that destroying the US dollar is goo for America and that Bush's poorly financed "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" is not as worthy as Bush's "NO OIL EXECUTIVE LEFT BEHIND". -

America today is a lot like Russia was at the end of Communism. The MSM was still controlled and following the party line but stuff did get out via Interfax.

Same here. Obama on audio saying he'll bankrupt the coal industry and cause electricity prices to skyrocket. Or whatever. That should be a big news story. The MSM won't touch it. Anything critical of Obama they send down the memory hole, and any newspaper that doesn't play ball gets kicked off the plane.
If it wasn't for the Internet, this would be barely known, and that's not how a free press is supposed in work, to give people information as it comes down the pike so they can make informed decisions. -

Now come on, folks! Can't you tell when Obama is pandering to his hard left, enviro-whack constituency? He was just posturing for purposes of getting the Democrat nomination at that time. Now that he is nominated, he has tacked to the center to get elected. Then, once elected and the Dems have a super majority... oops...... OH SHI*!!!!

Unfortunately, the ONLY way we can get past fossil fuels is to make them pay out the azz.
Reply
We MUST get past using these polutants...period.
Just like when gas is $4.00 a gallon THEN everyone screams for alternative renewable energy sources.
IF one is SO SERIOUS about TRUE and REAL national security, one would REQUIRE the gov. to invest in alternative renewable energy.
Wise up...it's the ONLY way out of this mess and into the future.
Tink of how much money we would ALL have to spend and boost the economy if we didn't have to pay outrageous prices for energy to the rich and wealthy power lobby.....
THINK ABOUT THAT!-

what is the only way out? O has just said he doesn't want coal power. if its 49% of our power base, now, what does he expect to replace it with?
Reply
don't say 'clean coal'. the only place it exists is on the drawing boards. it'd take 30 years to build enough. what do we do until then?
i don't know if you got the memo, but China is building so many that if we vanished tomorrow, the world CO2 concentration would still increase. China makes more CO2 than we do and India is close.
so, while O (and to a different extent McC) talk about cap and trade, we'll be selling C credits and taxing C production and all that and the Indians and Chinese will be dumping this stuff into the atmosphere willy nilly. for us to get into cap and trade WITHOUT the Chinese or Indians is economic devastation (for us) for no valid reason.
and O wants to bankrupt them?
wrong.
pathetic.
he knows not what he speaks of... -

Name one alternative energy to burn in our cars. All organic material contains carbon so whether it's old organic material or new organic material, it releases CO2 when it burns. If it's new organic material, you have to factor in the carbon used to grow it, harvest it, transport it.
Reply
Hydrogen is way down the road and the carbon footprint for making batteries is very large. Fossil fuel is our best fuel and we are not causing global warming by using it. Gore crap.

From the comments I've read, I get the impression that liberals are willing to overlook anything Barrack Obama says. That is unfortunate, but not unheard of from times past.
Reply
My impression of Obama is that he has no concept of how to deal with our fuel economy. He *will* attempt to lead us into a green fuel economy, but will in the end, fail because of the failure of alternative energy technologies.
The fact of the matter is this: when alternative energies are capable of handling our fuel needs, they will be used.
As far as this article is concerned, Barrack Obama's position is ridiculous. Once again, this is playing warfare: pandering to his audience...and when he is in a coal-working state, he will pander to them.
It's nice to know Barrack intends to bring our country together...he's making a great impression. -

So the approach to fighting pollution is to bankrupt companies? That's what the rest of the interview gets us.
Reply
How about you liberals go back and see how nature responded to 100 years of dependency on coal in this country? I'm thinking we survived ok. Sure...let's clean it up in any way it's economical to do so. But in the end the US economy and the well-being of Americans comes first. And no amount of tofu-eating free-range chicken littles is ever going to change that.

it goes right to the end user (read that teh consumer), or the business goes out of business.
corporations don't dump stuff in our water anymore. when they did, and the CWA was passed, many went out of business. that's fine for plating shops, buyt what happens when you shutter power plants with no other power source coming on line?
that's awful bad planning.
