Nixie - If you think about the last election of Bush, his entire campaign was built on the emotions of fear and paranoia. Fear of WMD's, fear of terrorism, fear of infiltrators into our society, fear of Muslims in general. The Republicans portrayed themselves as the only politicians who could defeat the forces of terrorism.
Reply
McCain, too has played on fear, though not as blatantly. He says Obama is not ready to be president. Unspoken is the part where McCain hints that Obama is not ready to take on the terrorists.
McCain and Palin keep alluding to an association of Obama with Jeremiah Wright and to Bill Ayers. Again, there is a play to fear Obama because he may secretly be a Muslim, or a radical leftist and adopt Black, radical policies guided by Ayers and by Wright. Then there is the charge of Obama being a socialist or communist, that he will take away wealth and transfer it to the poor. The poor are just a faceless mass of money-thirsty zombies who will suck up all that cash and turn normal white folks into poor folks.
Of course there is a great deal of emotion in any election. Who isn't afraid of losing your house or becoming more dependent on oil from Muslim countries?
But think about it. The emotion that Obama inspires most is hope. Maybe an undefined, incoherent hope for many of the poor and those who have lost their homes. Maybe they can not clearly verbalize what they are hoping for. But isn't hope a better emotion to evoke to inspire a vote instead of fear?
I myself have read the policies of both candidates about health care, tax plans, foreign policies, military plans for Iraq and Afghanistan. I have listened to all 4 national debates.
I have watched the demeanor and behavior of the 3 men and one woman thru the months of campaigning and their responses to the mortgage and credit collapse.
I have watched the anger and racism that McCain and Palin arouse. I have watched the young folks of our country become inspired by Obama and how they now rouse themselves to participate in the glorious responsibility of voting
Obama clearly is the better candidate for this historical juncture and for this generation.
Please read both websites about all their policies and a variety of editorial analyses and opinions of both candidates. Obama does say a lot of substantive matter. You must educate yourself on both sides. I have.-

Which ones? When he promised to take federal funding and then backing out of his "promise"?
Reply
How about his promise to bring people together. If he continues on this path and wins, I see a repeat of history. I see a great division. They're following a playbook written by the likes of Lenin, Stalin, Mussolini and Hitler. He has most of the press, after the fairness doctrine ends talk radio, his party will control all of the media. His party will hold the House, Senate and the White House. We've seen what happens when they control a state like Wisconsin or Michigan. Now it will be the whole nation. Jobs will go away as businesses are taxed to death. Like the NKVD, Gestapo, SS, SA or KGB, he's promised to create a civilian security force equal to our military. For what? Gun collections? Who would control them? The "Party" bosses? The more I'm hearing the more it reminds me of the stories of Austria in 1938. A part of my family left only days before the Anschluss. We supported the Engelbert Dollfuss. Not a good thing when he was opposed to Hitler. As I was saying, this is exactly how they started. First winning, then the taxes, restrictions, and security. You guys always claimed Bush was the bad guy. I think we're seeing an iron curtain being drawn in our own nation.

McCain is not ready to be President. He's an angry old man with poor judgment. Why did he challenge his party and vote with Bush 90% of the time? Good question, I'm thinking it was probably because everyone else had enough sense to know Bush was flushing us down the commode and McCain didn't. Look at his choice of running mate? Not a very "bright" choice.

Most who plan to vote for Obama will say they're voting for him because he will bring change.
Reply
The problem I have with that so called "change" is that Obama has never really said what that change will be. He says crap like...He will raise taxes only on people who make over $250,000 per year, then he say's $200,000 then it was 175,000. The last I heard it was $120,000. I say if Obama is elected we ALL will pay more in taxes. Anyway, the bottom line is that Obama is full of CRAP. He has pulled the wool over many peoples eyes!-

if its a tax break at 200 for single and 250 for jointly (meaning their income is listed as one income) how is that a penalty? with two incomes the total should be larger, therefor by increasing the ceiling of those included in the tax break for the couples, he is benefiting marriage not punishing it.

Not really. 2 married people working in comparable professions making about the same salary, just say $200,000. One of them starts paying higher taxes at $50,000, not $200,000 even if they file separately because they both itemize. One reason for that could be if one of them owned a business as sole proprietor, and Obamas talking gross, not net.

You should stop being so cynical.
Reply
Only good cabinet appointments and an effective staff can get any good legislation through the house, and only after the President gains their support
Bush had the support of many nations and both parties after 9/11
It took deception and underhanded tactics of the grandest of proportions to lose all of the support he had....Period. -

I'm sorry your candidate doesn't inspire the passion that Obama does.
He makes people feel powerful. This is the kind of leadership our country needs right now.
Not the rich getting richer and Cons manipulating the masses with fear.
We're tired of the petrol dictators, tired of seeing our earth get sicker and sicker with no acknowledgement of responsibility. We are better as a country united, that is part of Obama's message
Yes,I've been moved to tears by his words and vision for our country.
I've always gone with my gut feelings in my life and it has served me well.
I truly FEEL Obama will be a great leader and change will come.-

OMG! The tears that fill your eyes now? Are you kidding me? L.O.L.
Buy yourself some extra boxes of Kleenex. You will need them. Later on, you can use whatever is left for when Obama screws up the US even more than it is now, that is, IF, he is elected.-

Is it better to be completely cynical and make fun of others?
It takes passion and conviction to make changes.
It's not ALL about feeling.
Obama is extremely intelligent and visionary He is an intellectual well aquainted with critical thinking.
Can't say that for the other ticket

There are plenty of 'white folks' that are already poor. Why does it have to come down to race?
"I have watched the anger and racism that McCain and Palin arouse"
It was Obama that said they're going to tell you that I don't look like them. It was Obama and his supporters that have focused on race.-

GehlLady - It was Mccain and Palin who were aiming their propoganda at rich and middle class whites to make them fear the poor.
Reply
Obama was trying dispel the racism and prejudice by encouraging everyone to disregard the differences in his external appearance. It was McCain and Palin and the neocons who keep saying that Obama is different, that he has a muslim name, that he is a follower of Wright, that he is not a citizen, that he is actually a kenyan citizen. It was McCain and Palin who were playing on the subconscious racism and fears. Obama was mentioning it to dispel it.-

Perhaps, but there were charges of the 'race card' being pulled between Clintons and Obamas campaign before the general election. I feel it was inevitable it would be an issue in the process of this election, and I fervently hope it can now be put away.
Reply
Since you mentioned Rev. Wright, I do feel he was fair game due to Obamas words, that he was a mentor, and all the accolades Obama gave him early in his campaign. I felt John McCain showed much class in taking the issue off the table because, imho, it was too racially tinged to be examined without the true racists and lunatics becoming the issue instead of the other radical statements made by Rev. Wright, ie 9/11 and HIV.
