Barack Obama For President by Andrew Sullivan »
Posted By Neophile 1 year, 1 month ago in Political NewsThe world will soon remember why it resents America as well as loves it. But until this unlikely fellow with the funny ears and strange name and exotic biography emerged on the scene, I had begun to wonder if it was possible at all. I had almost given up hope, and he helped restore it. That is what is stirring out there; and although you are welcome to mock me for it, I remain unashamed. As someone once said, in the unlikely story of America, there is never anything false about hope. Obama, moreover, seems to bring out the best in people, and the calmest, and the sanest. He seems to me to have a blend of Midwestern good sense, an intuitive understanding of the developing world that is as much our future now as theirs', an analyst's mind and a poet's tongue. He is human. He is flawed. He will make mistakes. His passivity and ambiguity are sometimes weaknesses as well as strengths.

Andrew Sullivan has surprised me lately. He has generally been more conservative than I am...but here I agree with him wholeheartedly.

But then, Sullivan's column also seems to express the view of most Obamacans I know (beleive it or not, I do know more than a few Republicans for Obama). Forget liberal vs conservative! Maybe this election is intelligence vs stupidity!-

I know what you mean Scott. I've followed Sullivan for a few years. Watched him on book-tv. Agreed with him once in a while but he was for the war in the beginning--that was a total downer. But there was something about him I always liked. He's never been a neo-con for one. And a true conservative can be someone to admire. These guys in office are the furthest thing from conservatives.

Once Palin was announced as vp candidate, it was as though Sullivan became possessed. Good possessed. He's been taking a ribbing from many of his fellow journalists who now call him a liberal. It's been fun to watch and I really do admire him for being able to see what's happening and change accordingly. He's a smart guy. -

While he drafts the Declaration of Independence, tell Thomas Jefferson that the _Audicity_of_Hope_ is ridiculous. Tell General George Washington that Hope is a lost cause against the all-powerful British Army.

There are many instances of actual "mavericks" crossing party lines for senator Obama. Remember Mark McKinnon? The senior campaign advisor for McCain who stepped down because he wouldn't slime Obama. (He had no problem sliming typical politicians, but Barack he said was a decent human!)

Then there is the disillusioned supporters of George Bush who are defecting to Barack Obama, because he is the candidate with the best chance of uniting a divided nation.
Some others I know of include:
Tom Bernstein, who went to Yale University with Bush and co-owned the Texas Rangers baseball team with him. In 2004 he donated the maximum $2,000 to the president’s reelection campaign and gave $50,000 to the Republican National Committee. This year he is switching his support to Obama.
Matthew Dowd, Bush’s chief campaign strategist in 2004, announced that he was disillusioned with the war in Iraq and the president’s “my way or the highway” style of leadership – the first member of Bush’s inner circle to denounce Bush's performance in office.
John Martin, a Republican, and a Navy reservist deployed in Iraq started this website-
http://www.republicansforobama.org/
William F Buckley, son of the founder of the National Review.
(Lost his job because of it too).
Colin Powell,Ken Adelman,Scott McClellan, former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld
and especially Charles Fried, a former solicitor general under Ronald Reagan, who has also endorsed Obama. Fried was an active member of John McCain's campaign as recently as last month!
There are many more stories but hats off to those who are willing to vote for a man because it's the best choice for all of us rather than blind allegiance to a party.
McCain has Cheney's support and of course Joe the Plumber -- or not- really-Joe, not-really-a-plumber. Whatever he happens to be and good luck with the business he's not really buying or not really planning to buy. After all he is your average Joe right? I mean we all hire publicists right?
Do not mistake my lack of pain for pleasure, it ain't over til the pig in lipstick sings but it looks quite good.
An Obama presidency will be a watershed moment in history, not because of the obvious reasons but because it is a rebuke of the horrendous erroneous path the US has been lead down going back to Reagan, particularly the Bush years.
And a dramatic long overdue turn around in the role we play in the world. -

charlson:I met a lot of people personally who thought a better life was near.Their leaders promised them the same utopia Obama speaks of.By the time they realized it was all lies they were being imprisoned by the millions, other were more fortunate they headed to South Korea, leaving every thing behind except the clothes on their backs. The wind chill factor was forty below zero, most had rags on their feet.We brought many of them back on our ship, many died before they got to the south, but they died running toward freedom, instead of staying in a Marxist-Leninist Hell hole like North Korea.Where can we run to,and will we get the oppertunity, will someone come to rescue us.I saw a live news cast this morning as black people hugged, and kissed William Ayres at the polls.Could these same comrades of Ayres be the future guards of The American people who resist communism.

Thanks for your service.
Funny, I saw many people just trying to live in Nam. They really didn't care who won. They were just so tired of one force or another destroying their livelihood that it really didn't matter what name you called it to them it was all death !!!!
Oh yeah so who is Uncle Sam trading with now ???
Vietnam !!!
Tell me again about the big red menace that so many died for over there. Don't forget that I was there and saw the insanity.
Now before you go trying to say I'm some communist, I hate communism with a passion. I wasn't drafted I enlisted. I wanted to save my country from the menace.
Seems it took a while to figure out the menace was right here in Washington DC the whole time.
A bunch of crooks and liars who were called sir and honorable. That would be our Congress, Senate, and President.
Now you can surely disagree, but that really doesn't matter to me.
You saw what you saw. I have seen what I've seen.
You label the menace to make it fit ideology that is a knee jerk word.
The true menace is the consuming and illegal power that our government has taken from the rights of the people.
Put a label on it and spin it. Someione will believe it !!!

If Obama even understood the constitution it would be a start. His programs will be great if you like to sit on your ass and rely on the gov to do it for you and take from those who actually produce... Welcome to socialism and the decline of our hallowed land...

In a few hours we will be getting together with a group of American ex-pats to celebrate an Obama victory and to celebrate the beginning of a new America that we can be proud of. We voted with our feet 3 years ago when we could no longer stomach the Bush crime family and I doubt if we will ever return, but we will always be Americans. Obama will inherit a country broken by Bush that will take years to restore. Good luck Barack. "Salud"

I think hope is a good thing.

However, I haven't seen Obama do anything to unite this country. I believe your hope is founded in the fact that you know almost nothing about him. Furthermore, every story that is released about him, shows a very different Obama. Unfortunately, many of you are willing to close your eyes, calling the stories "made up".
Congradulations, if Obama wins. -

As usual it is too bad there aren't more choices. Watching the American and Canadian elections brings this point out continually. I generally watch what the actors do-who they side with. Generally when they have a consensus amongst their Hollywood group they are wrong. Obama if elected has the potential to bring us to a civil war.
