24 ghost towns and abandoned cities »
Posted By Wil 1 year, 1 month ago in Arts & EntertainmentWhat in the world could cause an entire city to be abandoned? Some become unlivable due to environmental disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis to nuclear meltdowns. Others become the center of military activity and remain contested and uninhabited as a result - or are simply left as memorials to the terrible events that took place in them. Still others are simply deserted when they outlive their usefulness as trade outposts or mining towns. Back around 1990, my best friend took a bunch of us to an abandoned asylum in Northville, Michigan. Completely changed me in the sense that I was completely in awe. The idea that this place was once in operation, but was a derelict by the time we got there was intoxicating. The place was haunted with history. I've been fascinated by places like that ever since.

We have one here in Traverse City, Michigan, but it's slowly being converted into apartments, stores, etc.

When I lived in the honor dorm of an unnamed university I found out that it had previously been a nunnery. The dorm down the street (where all the party people were) was previously an insane asylum. If you could pick locks, you could check out a lot of the old basement tunnels/cells.

Oregon had an abandoned hospital on the hill for years that backed onto my grandparent's estate. Lots of cavernous rooms, dark tunnels and mysterious pieces of (probably radioactive) equipment. Very cool.
