What in the world could cause an entire city to be abandoned? Some become unlivable due to environmental disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis to nuclear meltdowns. Others become the center of military activity and remain contested and uninhabited as a result - or are simply left as memorials to the terrible events that took place in them. Still others are simply deserted when they outlive their usefulness as trade outposts or mining towns. From Azerbaijan to Japan, Italy to Siberia and Cyprus to China, here are twenty-four haunting real-life ghost villages, towns and cities from around the world.

Man, Weburbanist is awesome. I've always been fascinated by abandoned buildings, ghost towns, and things like that and they have all kinds of entries about those things.

Awesome. The shots of Alexandria kinda make me want to learn to scuba. I'll be happy to hit one or two of those, though.

Puts into perspective how temporary our (human) damage can be, and how quickly nature can reclaim and repair.

Back around 1990, my best friend took a bunch of us to an abandoned asylum in Northville, Michigan. Completely changed me in the sense that I was completely in awe. The idea that this place was once in operation, but was a derelict by the time we got there was intoxicating. The place was haunted with history. I've been fascinated by places like that ever since.

We have one here in Traverse City, Michigan, but it's slowly being converted into apartments, stores, etc.

Exterior shots of some of the buildings that I took are here: http://flickr.com/photos/zenmasterdod/sets/7215760...

      Thanks for posting this, Wil!

That was very cool! Sad that there's so many homeless people worldwide, with so many abandoned livable places, but that was a cool website!

If bird flu ever takes flight, these towns will have a lot company.
