You folks will excuse me, if in the midst of the celebration we take a moment to realize that marriage equality lost in California according to the LA Times News. Please refer to my article on the Gay Group. I am sorry folks, but civil rights just took a beating tonight.

Aren't you the optimist, though? We have a fat chance of that happening. They are not going to let up just because they lost an election that they never had any hope of winning.
We have to stay vigilant and keep all of the newly elected polits honest. We have to stay critical of their work and keep their noses to the grindstone as there is so much to correct in the economy, in damage made to the Constitution and in criminal actions done to our Nation and the world.

McCain lost because he did not run his own campaign. He is a decent man but the people he surrounded himself with during the campaign hardly meet that benchmark. Especially Sarah Palin. She ran a new kind of campaign. A new low in American politics. I watched all of the born-again Christian Republicans fall into line behind her. But name a single characteristic this woman has in common with their figurehead? I just don't see it. McCain sold out the last of his own beliefs to get the nomination in the first place. His pick of Palin was his last desperate act.

I have to now consider that maybe there is something out there watching out for us, something that allowed Obama's victory last night. It is a miracle that in this age of hatred and division such a candidate could triumph. And as I promised I will find a nice neat plot of American soil and kiss it today. For only today do I have my belief in the future of this nation back. For eight years it had been bludgeoned and bashed.
We on the Left love this country just as much as those on Right. But waving a flag isn't what love is all about anymore than bringing home flowers every night. It's setting an example for what a good, proud American can be. Obama set that example. That's what sold him to the majority of voters. Hope, not hatred is the way.-

You're wrong about McCain. He did run his own campaign. The GOP really didn't back him simply because he's not a conservative. When the big money fails to back you, it makes life difficult. Then you add his charge of public funding only, Barry was able to out spend him around 7 to 1 when everything is sorted out. Adding Palin was another McCain move. That the party did support, we like her. But she was running as VP. That only goes so far. People wanted change but I'm not sure what type of change. They've selected higher taxes with less freedoms. The United States I served is going into the sunset. I hope we see a change in 2 years but I'm not hopeful.

Yes, but democrats now have the nuclear option with filibusters with a democratic president.

And by the way, you should support the president, your unpatriotic tone is not appreciated. (I always wanted to say that to a conservative)

It was big of McCain to come out fairly early to concede and his speech did ask for everyone to support their new President-elect, even if a number in the crowd obviously were not prepared for such a thing.
Reply
Anyone notice the body language betwen McCain and Palin when they sort of hugged at the end of his speech? Didn't seem very warm to me.

Me too, N2N! (He's at 333 now). It was a long, long road. I'm watching McCain's concession speech now. The crowd booed when he mentioned Obama, but he asked them to join him in giving President-elect Obama their full support. I doubt that will happen, but it was good of him to say that.

There's really only one thing I have to say to that.....
Hahahahahahahahahaha.
I think it's safe to say that nearly every one here supported GW on 9-12-2001. It was his policy decisions to morph that nearly worldwide support into the propaganda campaign to invade and occupy Iraq, a oil rich Arab nation that was not involved in the attack of 9-11, that began the psuedo-conservatives demise. Sadly Barack's victory will not bring back the nearly 5000 young Americans lost nor the countless Iraqis killed. -

You have absolutely no clue what you are talking about. Is that what RL was saying today on his wrong wing radio show?
You recently witnessed socialism at its finest under the signature of GW Bush in the form of the bailouts. Were you complaining then?
Didn't think so. Additionally, what you witnessed over tha last seven plus years was not "Conservative", just Republican.
That has now ended by mandate of the U.S. electorate. Don't like it? You are welcome to leave. -

I yelled, I cried, I prayed, I jumped up and down on these artificial hip joints, I did the happy dance with my best friend who spent the night and watched with me, I called all my children and we screamed and cried by phone together, and I stayed up until I passed out around 3 or so...the adrenalin was just flowing so high!!

My stomach has been tied in knots for the past two weeks, waiting for this miraculous moment. Birth pains, no doubt!
CONGRATULATIONS, AMERICA, WE'VE WITNESSED THE RE-BIRTH OF OUR NATION!! It's like a second 4th of July, another day when the "real" Americans showed up and showed out!!

I am excited and hopeful for our nation. That said, I am saddened for California, Arizona, Florida, and Arkansas, which could not see fit to establish equality ahead of bigotry. In all 4, it would seem gay marriage and gay adoption have been thwarted. Civil rights for straights, but not for gays and lesbians. Bittersweet victory.

364-174 is my conservative guess here. My less conservative is 377-161. Montana seems to be trending towards McCain and Missouri is to close to call. A few blue places still counting and its a really small margin right now. Might be red.

Missouri hangs on Clay County, I think.

This loss really is the fault of our party. They ran someone that isn't a conservative. We ran a Rino. Perhaps now as a party we can dump those left that are not conservatives. I'm tired of carrying water for guys like McCain who feel more at home with the Dems than with their own party. This will be a real house cleaning or the party will see a huge split with conservatives creating their own party.

Sadly, I see many of the Democrats are still biter and angry and hateful towards the republicans.
What is it going take to make you Democrats happy?
For our country to remain balanced and true, we have to have a two party nation.
A one party nation would spell nothing but trouble for us. Can't you simply be happy now, you got what you wanted, you should all be happy. So why not take this opportunity to put on a happy face, go celebrate your win and try to tone down the hate would ya? I think most of us are plum tired of the hate talk here. I know I sure am. -

Fortunately I'm in the field this week and I won't have to hear the gloating in my office for a few days. Who knows, Obama may well be a decent president, only time will tell. Every president starts with a clean slate after all. There were just too many unknowns about him for me to support him with my vote. I'm still concerned about things he's said, as well as those he has been involved with that have shaped his way of thinking. How many hangovers are being nursed by you guys?
Reply
BTW, you on the right, don't fret. Hold your heads high and stay here and have your views heard here and add balance. This country is great because we think differently, it's a dangerous thing for everyone to think exactly alike. The role reversal will be good for us and hopefully the party will now get back to it's roots in order to survive and we will see an actual conservative Republican Party again. -

Congratulations to Obama, and congats. to his supporters here on propeller. Although I've not had much time to participate here, I have on occasion read some of your comments in some interesting discussions, and admire your tenacity in insisting on putting forth your voices of reason, to counter those of hate and intolerance or maybe (hopefully) just lack of understanding.

I met his mother & knew her for 30 years, during which time, while lamenting the loss of her child, she never gave up on the true promise of America. Tonight that promise was fulfilled & the spirits of all those both Black & White who have died over the last 44 years in the pursuit of of this promise smile down upon us. It is a proud time for America
