Beyond that, we need to shift decision-making down the heirarchic ladder in any way we can. Part of the problem with America is simply this - our federalist system, with much of the power concentrated at the national level, is simply too much power in too small a place, and that power draws elitists, greedheads and opportunists like crap draws flies.
Whatever. We have a lot of work to do. Voting people into power won't help, to the degree that the problem is structural. As an anarcho friend observed, "no gain in voting the bastards out if what you vote them out of doesn't change." -

Proportional voting would give some power to people that they can't control....this would be a good thing.

Unfortunately America is too far down the road of corporate fascism whereby all the money keeps funneling to the rich. This allows them to buy more companies, downsize and buy off politicians.
Obama will be a slight change but the strategy of the USA will not change much....with 120military bases and through the corrupt practices of the World bank and IMF continue to use their forces to prop up petty dictators who will turn over their resources to the multi-nationals. Exploitation maximized!!!!
This will pit them against the Chinese more as they also require resources. However the Chinese have a totally different approach. They will help develop the infrastructure in return for access to their resources. If I was in power and a just person who cared for the people of the country I would certainly show bias towards the Chinese plan.

How about Instant Runoff Voting? It's the system they use in Spain, and in Parliaments, and some counties around the United States.

Basically, an IRV system makes it so they tally all the first-choice votes, and if there is no clear winner then they remove last place from the ballot and keep re-tallying everybody's next vote until there is one.
Had we have had this system in 2000, then Nader would have gotten his votes home, without the risk of being painted a black sheep. -

Third parties can help. Historically though, once a third party ascends to power, it becomes as corrupt as the one it replaced. Consider that the Republican party began as a progressive, anti-racist third party. And look at what it has become.

Other posters above are right - ranked preference or IRV voting would radically transform the electoral landscape, and give third parties a voice. But the duopoly holds power, and they stand to lose if these reforms are implemented. So it is doubtful we will have anything but the status quo in the immediate future. -

Have the third parties work at local levels, not national. Make them regional at first. Gain control of a few towns, counties and so on. Then work on state elections. After you have had a few Governors in a couple of states start running Presidential candidates. You might take a state or two. Minnesota is a good place to start, IMO. After you take a state or two its alot tougher to be made fun of. Runoff ballots and proportional representation work great as well. I think a change in how third parties do things combined with election reforms would make powerful third parties in the US.
