    Third parties can help. Historically though, once a third party ascends to power, it becomes as corrupt as the one it replaced. Consider that the Republican party began as a progressive, anti-racist third party. And look at what it has become.

    Other posters above are right - ranked preference or IRV voting would radically transform the electoral landscape, and give third parties a voice. But the duopoly holds power, and they stand to lose if these reforms are implemented. So it is doubtful we will have anything but the status quo in the immediate future.

      I think it would just take 2-3 senators. They would hold the key (in the last senate) to getting ANYTHING done. Make it 5-7 and you'd still have the keys this time.
