Comments for "Simpsons" hit for not-so-gay crack »
Posted By JamesMarcus 1 year, 1 month ago in Arts & EntertainmentA gay-rights group is demanding an apology from a cartoon character on "The Simpsons" for uttering a homophobic slur on the show's Halloween episode.
Nelson Muntz, the goofball bully on the hit Fox show, set off a firestorm Sunday night by insulting his nerdy classmate Milhouse Van Houten by saying, "That's so gay."
While Nelson's verbal poke at Milhouse was meant to get laughs, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) responded with a rebuke. "Nelson's use of 'that's so gay' in a negative way is not surprising considering that 90% of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth say they hear the term used this way frequently or often at school," the group said in a statement. (You can hear the controversial comment yourself in the video below, at 15:45.)

Yeah I reported the spam and I saw the comments, some other offensive things are still on the page, I wonder where the line is drawn on that sort of thing?

BYW James, isn't it about time that my profile be taken down off the front page and give someone else a chance at 25 friends request, spam and people asking them to come 'share' pictures and receiving emails that others are tired of looking at their face? Thanks for putting me on the front page, but I think I should share the 'experience'.-

As usual, it's a fine line between removing junk and playing hall monitor. The worst stuff is being removed, the borderline stuff is subject to discussion (although we're always pleased to see the community slapping down the offensive posts as well).

This is the same group of people who ordered Joe the Plumber be killed and hung a Sarah Palin mannequin by the neck as a Halloween joke! Sorry, your horrible behavior is reaping its reward. That was evident when you all supported Obama and the black community and they turned against you and voted down gay marriage.

Instead of saying "that's so gay", maybe the LGBT community would prefer "that's so fierce." Also, gay is defined as happy as well. Since it has a double meaning, then really no one can claim anything. Get over it or start a program in schools, where children say that frequently, so that they can learn which speech you find acceptable or not. Finally, NO this is not the same as saying the "N word," which only has one meaning and means something so far worse than "that's so gay" can ever mean! It's ridiculous how this can make people get up in arms. "That's so gay!" The funny thing is, in this context it has no correlation to the gay you're thinking of... it almost has a completely new meaning! So gay went from being happy and did people riot when the first person changed it to mean a form of sexuality. Blame it on that person for not considering it already had a meaning. Maybe that person would have made up a whole new word. Lesbians have their own word, transgendered people have their own word, but gay people use a word already in use. Now if you're thinking my argument is being blown out of proportion, that's what I think about yours! (response to all the people up in arms)

How about "heterosexually challenged"? What ever happened to the flamboyant homos that could take a joke? Unless they managed to patent the word "gay", they don't have any claim to it. Here's a thought, invent a word. Everyone is doing it nowadays.

Actually they should thank the Simpson for using Nelson to make such a remark, it's not like it was coming from someone that's character is nice or a good person. Nelson is an aszhole, you expect remarks like that coming from aszholes, just like in real life. You can say to your kids, do you want to sound like an aszhole like Nelson? just keep calling things you think are dumb, weird, odd or anything else negative- gay. You can seem just as ignorant and a bully like the cartoon character Nelson.
Reply
If I were gay maybe I'd feel the same way, people using a word to describe anything offensive weird etc...but in this case I think the sensitivity took over before they thought about it, and surely the whole gay community doesn't share their feelings about it, my Son doesn't , he understands Nelsons character is an aszwipe.

There's a deeper problem here than a single use on a TV show.
Reply
"That's so gay" is used all over the place to negatively describe things or situations. This use of "gay" does not match any of the old definitions, and therefore is likely an expression (conscious or subconscious) of revulsion towards homosexuals. The use of the phrase is extremely common in elementary schools long before children understand what "gay" means. So for years, children are bombarded with the equation of "gay" = "bad/stupid".
Enter young Johnny, who's just starting to realize he's a little different from the rest of the kids. Every time he's heard the word "gay" used, it's in a negative way. Think he's going to have an easy time accepting who he is? If he admits he's gay, does he have to think of himself as bad/stupid? Will others think of him that way?
I think the point here is that the Simpsons had an opportunity to open a discussion about how this word is used negatively and repetitively, and they just accepted that use.
This use of 'gay' is perhaps one of the most damaging, because it's done without malicious intent. People don't realize the psychological impact of the message it carries (gay = bad). The situation has absolutely nothing to do with homosexuality yet by calling something 'gay', the offender takes a pot-shot at the situation AND at homosexuals.-

You're right, I don't give a ship about the Simpsons. But I see this use of "that's gay" so often amongst children that don't even know what it means. Where are they learning to use the phrase? What effect does it have?
Reply
You have to be completely ignorant about subliminal messaging and advertising in general to not think that repeating a message over and over again does not have an effect.
And if I have to explain it, then it's unlikely you'll understand it. It's called negative re-inforcement, and it can be a very effective psychological tool.

You know these people are sooooooo stupid. Are you gay or Homosexual? A word only has negative meaning if those that are offended by it give it the power to do so. The GLSEN just empowered the word that much more by protesting its use. The first and true meaning of gay has nothing to do with homosexuality. So choose not to be gay be homosexual.

The Simpsons, Family Guy, etc. are all adult cartoons that unfortunately have been pushed more and more by the liberarl media on young children. Parents and guardians need to be very proactive! Now this episode may have been late at night, but many of these shows are now shown during prime time. Also, so many of these shows insult alot of Christians and adults. Parents, know what your young ones are watching. There is even an inappropiate cartoon rated pg7 on Cartoon Network. It's about a bunch of teenagers in a camp. It's extremely vulgar. Not for young kids. Sad! sad! no morals

Congratulationd on overcoming alcohol and drugs. It must have been a hard struggle for you. Apparently, most everything you watched on television was done while you were drunk or stoned. Been there. I was in my 20's. Hope you are young and not going through the hard struggles right now.
Reply
Now evidently some sort of religious, old world primitive thought pattern has taken over your brain. It happens with drug addicts and alcoholics sometimes, especially if they went through a 12 step group and got hung up on the "higher power" concept. Like others who come to grow afraid of their own painful existance and regret their past excesses, you seek comfort in judging the morals of others and sit back in smugness hoping there is a God and you get points when you die.
Quick Break: the word you wanted to use earlier is "morals." That refers to the internal thought processes that guides one behavior. "Morale" is what a team has, as when ther are losing and one says their morale is low.
OK, back to reality. You will feel better as you begin to realize there are no good person points for you, the best part of your life is probably over, and the best hope you have is to try to have some fun in life, help others, and don't judge them.-

There is no GOD or HELP to a person who has chosen to believe. Science does show a designer.. too many greater than you have shown this. DROPPING a NO HOPE comment on a person is mentally ill on your part. NO Higher power? maybe you should have suggested the person talk to Dr. Kovorkian too? Even if you could not prove there was a Higher power.. it brings out the best in one to have HOPE.. to OVER COME.. to live for a greater purpose.. The Nazi thought like this too. IF you are sick.. or challenged.. we should remove them for the Greater good. BUT LIFE.. life is respect.. i would rather respect life and be wrong than have no HOPE and be right.

It's just another example of how common speech in a society can be offensive. People used to use the word "jew someone down" to mean get the price down. When Jews began to object that it was offensive the term came into disuse or at least public disuse.

Gay people need to stand up not only for their rights but be vigilant in making sure that public ridicule is taken as commonplace. In the political atmosphere of the past few years, taking potshots at gays and muslims has been politically acceptable. Maybe now that we have a President who comes from a minority background, we can get people to stop using the minority du jour as the current punching bag of bigots.-

These people are not minorities anymore, people need to stop acting like they are special becuase of color or ethic background. I have a gay friend that says "thats so gay" all the time and i bet had he been here to write on this blog he would agree that this is completely retarded! Oh i better watch myself, they will want that sentence pulled next.

As a proponent of same-sex marriage and equal rights for people of all sexual orientations, I've never liked the way some people use "gay" as a negative adjective. But if this group is going to complain about "The Simpsons" they need to take "South Park" to task too because they use that phrase all the time. You can't legislate language, but we should all strive to be respectful of people of all kinds.

I totally agree with lostlenore.... We can legislate language but we shouldn't be promoting hate and stereotypical behavior as well.. The fact that young people call everything they don't like "gay" should be used as a teaching tool, not applauded.

So maybe you shouldnt watch a show basiclly designated for todays pop culture society. and if your so offended by it just change the chanel like anyone else would do, GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

I don't recall much of reaction to the Metro-Sexual episode where all the men began acting and dressing like gays because of watching "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" a show featuring gays who are pretty stereotypical. Much raunchier than anything you would see on "The Simpsons" and the use of the word "gay" was constant. Kyle was mocked for not being "gay enough". Kenny wore a pink suit with a fur collar. Cartman worried about an exfoliant breaking out his neck.
Reply
All of this PC absurdity must be from the extremes. This is the way kids talk to each other. Believe it or not! Actually I would think this would be very tame. The Simpsons have long supported gays, for that group, or anyone else, to take offense at this is non-sensical. Regulating what is and isn't "free speech" is far more dangerous.

These particular words are just symbols of peoples bigotry and insensitivity. We shouldn't encourage that. We all know the epithets for all of the minorities who have come to Amercia at one time or another, spic, wop, mockie, heeb, etc. etc.... Most people have stopped using those epithets, and have at least stopped using them in public. There are only two groups currently who are fair game.... muslims, and gays. and we need to put a stop to that , because there are gay young people who are seriously hut and threatened by what some people think is harmless commonplace parlence.

Why is it that I can turn on just about any given comedy and see everyone rippin on white people about how they talk or how they dress(just some examples) and this is funny and alright? i"ll tell you why, because we white people are not so sensitive. We think that these mild jibes are funny and entertaining. This is why we watch TV!!!

They are really grabbing at straws here. The more socially acceptable their lifestyle gets, The harder it is to find something to bring attention to themselves. Everyone in every walk of life and of every lifestyle choice can find something on any show if they look hard enough. I watched that episode and didn't even notice that it was said until this group pointed it out. Be careful. Bringing things like this to the publics attention will set you back. What struck me was not the fact that the Simpsons said it, but the fact that this group was offended by it. Just live your life.

Duh, because the people who're being called gay on Will & Grace are gay. It's a fact, not an insult, regardless of whether or not the speaker's also gay. This article is about implying that being gay is bad by using the word as a synonym for "bad". For example, according to the GLSEN's logic, "Will got with a guy? That's so gay," is an appropriate use of the word because guys getting with each other is part of the definition of it. An example of an inappropriate use is, "I have to work today? That's so gay."
Reply
Having said that, however, whether or not I agree with the GLSEN's logic depends on how someone using the word thinks of it (which I do realize can't be determined without their explaining it). My point is that even though I'm gay, I admit that I still use the word like the Simpsons character did, but it's because I don't mean it to have anything to do with the definition about homosexuality. I mean it as a different definition ("corny") of what just happens to be the same word, like how a third definition of it is "happy".
As far as the Simpsons issue in particular, I don't have an opinion because I don't watch it.

Gay people would be living their lives if they had equal protection under the law... if they had the right to pursuit of happiness guaranteed in the consitution. It's such an easy thing to say when you are the majority, when you haven't fought any struggles, and when you are still denied the basic human rights that are guaranteed in most of the civilized world.

Stop being so high and mighty and think they need special treatment, it is bad enough political correctness has taken away the right to even say Merry Christmas in a store without possibly losing your job, much less this crap. There's a big difference in "girlfriend" and a "partner" when it comes to many rights afforded a married couple. Being included on a health insurance policy of a partner that works for a company offering it, being able to keep and live in the home your partner owned if he/she died, and the most important benefit that married couples enjoy that gay couples do not: the right to divorce and get half the community property.

GLSEN are not helping. Let's remember that Nelson is not representative of open minded, compassionate society, but of the sort of person who derides others because they are different. By their reasoning no bigotry, prejudice, intolerance or hatred for any demographic could be portrayed in film, print or otherwise. Sadly, the word gay is used quite commonly today to connote undesirableness. Nelson is just the sort of person you would expect it from. Let's also remember that the Simpsons have been praised by GLAAD for positively presenting homosexuality. GLSEN, fight your enemies, not your allies.

I am sorry but if you are going to quote the Bible use the whole quote:
Reply
"Judge not lest ye be judged. For with the same measure ye judge ye shall be judged." Before you can take the speck out of your brothers eye- pull the plank from your own eye!"
This means- do not judge if you are living in the same sin! We all make judgements everyday! We judge if it is safe to cross a street- if we believe certain acts are moral or immoral, if we should smoke, drink alcohol & drive.. WAKE UP everyone makes judgements.. It is the moral authority on which you base those judgements that makes the difference. If there is no supreme moral authority- no God- than anything goes.. Hitler is as good as Mother Teresa- for in their 'own moral standards' they were both right.. By what do you judge right from wrong if not God? Your own values & morals? Well my values say "it's okay for me to shoot you" if there is no God- and we all decide our own morals than how can you say that my morality is not correct??

You'll never be able to legislate the truth or words people use. If they want to be accepted as normal, then act it. And homosexual lifestyles are not, and should not be accepted as normal..it is a choice made and like all things in life, you must accept the consequences of your choices. And if you're gonna get all limp-wristed(sorry) about a little comment made about your lifestyle, you're gonna have a lifetime full of hurt. Grow up and stop acting like pansies! Wah-wah-wah.

All these comments against the Simpsons would have merit if Nelson were the character kids are supposed to think of as "the good one" and emulate. Instead, Nelson is the quintessential bully. He stands for everything that is negative at school (as the twins Lisa attends school with are symbols of conformity and ostracism, ala Mean Girls). For over a decade, we've known that Nelson uses insensitivities like this one because his whole bully persona is a front to mask hurt and feelings of inadequacy. The Simpsons ACTUALLY says that speech like this is the product of the uneducated and the underparented. Can no one see levels here?

Nelson has probably said believing in Santa was gay, that's his gig, to put people down, who wants to be like Nelson? it's just an example of that kind of mentality. And the homophobes and bigots on this story are coming out of the woodwork...OMG! a few on here should actually change their names to include Nelson.

I am so sick of people having nothing better to do than LOOK for something that MAY offend them. Seriously people, there are wars, poverty, famine, and REAL issues going on in these times, if you can't take a joke in your comfy living room with your color tv, then go spend some time elsewhere in the world until you appreciate what you have. Sometimes, stuff is GAY. Deal with it! Only in America is GAY not allowed to be funny.

He didn't mean gay as homosexual. I say things like this all the time and I mean it's stupid. I say things are retarded, yet teach special needs children.
People are so freaking sensitive. Thanks, liberals, for ruining the Constitution by not allowing people to say anything anymore without some stupid group being offended.
And for the record, I work in a school and have never heard kids say this. And if they are all saying it this way, and don't mean it as homosexuals, what is the big deal?

We as Americans have lost our balls (pun intended) as we are no longer a society of free speaking individuals. Everywhere you go now people are forced to walk on eggshells because they're afraid someone might overhear them and get offended and sue them for the money that they don't have. I don't know about any of you but I'm not rich. I'm a middle-class citizen struggling to get by day by day and I believe that we don't have time or the patience to deal with this red tape bull any longer. If anyone doesn't agree with anything I say take a look at your constitutional rights!! We have the right to say whatever the hell we please and if I was FOX I would point that out to those pansies and tell go suck an...well they probably do anyway. My point being is this we as Americans have to decide that the rights our fore-fathers fought and created for us still exists. To Hell with anyone who can't take a joke. If that is the case then you are better off in the Middle East where THEY ARE AFRAID to speak out because someone will come to kill them instead of just suing. Do a tour over there and they might stop complaining about stupid nonsense like "THat's so gay."

I have a thought, the GLSN should be sued for the return of the word Gay to it's original meaning, used for centuries before hijacked to mean sexual orientation. I say let them come up with a new word or just keep homosexual and lesbian for themselves and give back the original meaning of gay. Then we have no more bias issues to contend with when using gay in a sentence. "That is so gay" could mean that is so exuberant, happy, brilliant, lively, bright etc, etc, etc...
Reply
Give us back origianl meaning (GUBOM)maybe we should organize and petition Washington, and really take all this nonsense to a new level. -

Your defenses for what happened are sad, pathetic, and, more to the point, ignore the whole point of the situation -- The fact that the phrase "That's so gay" refers to something being perverted IS the problem.
"Gay" isn't a perversion. It's a lifestyle choice. and "they" are part of us. "they" have rights. THEY are US too.
Either accept that, or move to Iran. Ahmadinejad says they have none. (Except, of course, you probably automatically have something against all arabs, too) -

You know, there are more important things in this world then worrying about a cartoon show saying your so gay. Homosexuals do not have the corner on the word gay, at one time it meant happy. Give it a rest and stop looking for something to complain about. Stop acting like a bunch of crybabies, and build a bridge and get over it.

Why? Since when did people care what was on the Simpsons, the episode was also making fun of Catholics, you don't see them complainig. The character Nelson was just using an everyday term that all kids or teens use. It may not be nice but it is true take it from a teen.

SERIOUSLY? com'on.... insensitivity? Funny how the Homosexual culture found this offensive, but when Christianity is slammed, it doesnt bother them... oh thats right, its funny when something that doesnt except them is bashed...HYPOCRITES. Jokes are ment to be offensive. It gets a chuckle. Do you not listen/watch comedians? I find stuff borderline offensive, but I laugh because thats what life should be about, happiness and enjoyment and full of fun. This world is too small and this life is too short to let simple words, or TV offend you. Honestly, we have men, women and children dying in other countries. We have our economy in the toilet, we have a war in iraq and afghan. We have homeless people on our streets. We have people losing homes, children being abused. We have too many SERIOUS problems that need attention and you people are worried over a phrase from a TV show? seriously...

It seems, there is always someone, some group, some "cause" just looking for a chance to whine about a word, a gesture and some other fact that will bring attention to themselves. Individuals, groups, need to stop taking things so personally - unless you either are feeling guilty or ashamed about something, don't worry about it.

Gay people need to get over it. I'm sick of the Gay issues constantly being shoved in my face. I don't care if people are gay or what they do and I hold no hatred toward them. I just don't want to hear about it. I think many people feel the same way. When children are being forced to digest this information and forced to decide their orientation by the time they are 10 is absurd. Whatever happened to the innocence of children? What became of their right to be naive until they became old enough to decide for themselves what they wanted to be without the peer pressure of gay rights activists and the extreme left. I voted Obama.

Personally I don't know why they are offended, Nelson is a cartoon character example of a dumb asz bully, people that know the show, know he says offensive things, it's not that it was funny or anything else really except just 'Nelson's" character to be a bully. Yes he could have just said that's stupid, but that's a givin, anyone could have said that. Nelson has to be an ignorant bully.

Not everything in this world is going to be nice. Either get the fricken hell over it, or just watch something else. If you are so sensitive that you will cry over a cartoon character saying "thats so gay" maybe you should seek some sort of help.

Until a group achieves full equality, which includes freedom from irrational derision, not to mention irrational hated (see the posts of Spongerobb, above, and ofso many others--Jesus!) there is a process by which the prejudiced must be made conscious of their bigotry.
Reply
The Simpson thing is on the one hand a tempest in a teapot; but, as witness the recent bans on gay marriage (on the same day a black man was elected president!), gay people must still call out homophobic behaviour whenever and wherever it appears.
Antigay sentiment is the "last" permitted prejudice. So I say nail it, again, whenever and wherever it appears. -

Seriously? Gay people need to stop thinking they deserve public apologies b/c "their feelings are hurt" b/c someone used the word GAY in a negative way. C'mon. Grow up. If you're that effin insecure about being gay then be straight. Why the hell do you care? That would be like a prostitute getting offended everytime you called her a *****. Y'all think you deserve parades, and special rights, and to be catered to on a daily basis? ****, there's nothing special about it. I don't get a parade just b/c I'm straight. We're all equal, gay or straight, and shouldn't be given separate treatment just b/c some of us can't handle "name calling" and the occasional joke. Everyone's had jokes made a/b them, it's whether or not you can have the dignity to let it slide and laugh it off that makes the difference. But apparently we all need to cry about it and demand public apologies. Pathetic.

Gay is not anything that has to do with these phony homosexuals....Gay is the joy of life sustaining powers from within. Webster doesn't define gay as some liberated sense of same sex homosexual act of fulfilment. But with this being America the land of anything goes. Next month the homosexuals will be filing a lawsuit against Webster's Dictionary, for misdefining the word GAY in their book. They were termed "QUEERS" whenever I was young. That defines them adequately in terms of who they are. If I wrote The Simpsons, I'd have a part that says hey you stupid Queers!!! Oh thats so slanderous and improper...Hey Supreme Court get busy and rule that these Queers have a right not to be called that.

1. I can't even burn leaves in my community, how do you get around local laws when you are burning the animals you sacrifice and disect according to Leviticus?

3. How much of your Mondays's are spent stoning your neighbors who didn't follow the directions of not working on the Sabbath day as prescribed by Leviticus, and how do you avoid being prosecuted by those pesky secular laws against killing and such?

I also recall when gay meant just being very happy. What if they were hit with perverting that. This show has used it's humor to lighten up issues. Look at past Halloween episodes, and episodes that occur in presidential election time frames. And yes, much of the humor is targeted for the 30+ age bracket, again, it has since the beginning, that is probably why it has been on T.V. almost 20 years. Just relax and enjoy the show!

Why do we have to tiptoe around, making sure we don't hurt particular people's feelings (but it's more than ok to hurt other people's feelings, like fat people, Christians, Republicans, etc). I think EVERYONE should be fair game, and all these attempts to restrict freedom of speech should be what is banned. If you don't like what a show has to say, TURN THE CHANNEL.

The gay community has asked Ameirca and the world to treat them fair and equal, well with that comes being made fun of on tv shows like the Simpsons. If the Simspons made a comment about Christians (which they do all the time) or rednecks no one would have a problem including those complaining about the gay comment.

Are things to a point that restaraunts will be called "So Italian " or " So French" because the people running and owning them either are or are creating ann image that they want portrayed. It certainly would not be negative.

Because some people in this world have a preference for fence posts and the like to be inserted in their orrafices, doesn't mean that a term used on a cartoon television show is deragatory or mean spirited. It is an overworn and overblown excuse for attention. Too many positive things have occured in recent years to do anything but find such use in the show as either funny or forgettable. Don't let a life choice or a decision of preference make a group or their said supporters respond so seensitively to something so minor.
Also , if someone out there can help, I Have neighbors who are GREAT GUYS who live an alternative life style ,and so I can have a better understanding is the lifesyle inherentat birth or developed at a point in life. Neither makes a diiference, Just want to know if it is a choosen style of life or an occurance in life. -

The Speech Police. Is this one going to the Supreme Court? Certain words can only be used in praise, not negative ways? Fruit, prancer, queen, swishy, whitey, blackey (pet names) Come on! What about- *****, Pimp, Gangsta? Those are ok if used by black people, right? Calling someone a moron is insulting to parents of retarded children ya' know! "Jerk" came from insulting people with Muscular Distrophy. I'm just waiting for Cannibals to start complaining that they are misunderstood!

Why cater to less than 5% of the population ? If they find it offensive , to fricken bad . If anything it should be treated like a disease like alcaholism or something . These people are sick .I'm curious why its always hair stylists or some cake makers type jobs they work . You never see a couple of lumberjacks sayin "Yo George you gotta nice ass ". Its a twisted choice these faggots make .

You know, when I was growing up the word queer meant odd or strange. For example, if my mom got a bill in the mail after she had just paid it off the month before, she would have said "That's really queer!" If the same thing happened to me today and I said that, people would think I had just said the most horrible thing. Right now, to say that's so gay doesn't really refer to any sexual preference. It is merely an expression used to say that in your opinion, something is really stupid. I am a teacher. If I told the kids they were going to have a test the day before winter break, someone might say under his breath, "That's so gay". Big deal!!

Next they'll want the word "Gay" to be the "G" word. I think it's so far past ridiculous that adult pople are afraid to say "******" and Gay." Some people need to quit being so sensitive and others need to quit intentionally saying things that are so sensitive.

I saw nothing wrong with that episode of the Simpson's. The word *** in the dictionary means Cigarette and the word gay means happy. People have been using those terms for decades. Get over it we have other larger problems in life to deal with. Freedom of speech is in the constitution as #1 everything else follows. If we took everything that was offensive out of use then noone could talk at all because someone somewhere would be offended. Get real!!!

I'd say that it's not nice to call people names, regardless of whether or not it's meant in a derogatory way towards the people from which the name comes. "You stupid Mick", may not be meant in a derogatory way towards all Irishmen in general, just that particular Irishman in front of you. But, it's still not nice.
On the other hand, when are we going to be able to be comfortable enough in our rights and our liberties to be able to laugh at ourselves? I think that's when we'll truly know that racism is over in America. That is, when a white comedian can use the racial slur "N....." in a derogatory (yet funny) way and there is laughter in the audience and the NAACP doesn't lose it's mind. We're not there yet. -

Tempest in a teacup here folks... the fact is that "that's so gay" is an expression used by persons under the age of about 16. If any adult said that, at least where I live, people would look at him or her and say "what are you, twelve years old? Grow up."

It's just a dopey kid thing, they'll age out of it and find a new stupid thing to say instead. It's not gonna solidify their attitudes toward gay people, any more than other rubbish that goes around on the school bus affects their development. -

They had to use "that's so gay," because "that's so utterly homosexually feminine-masculine in a hyper-sensitive gender-bending queer-eye I want to have same-sex intercourse sort of way" would have taken too much air-time.
Reply
Of course, they could have also meant "that's so happy." Heck, it wasn't the straights that coined the term "gay" for gay people. They coined it for themselves, so how can they be upset with this. Complaining about people using the word gay, is like, so gay.... -

There were so many other things to offended by in this episode - blasphemy, violence, etc. - why complain about one? This is comedy poking fun at life! The term "gay" has eveoled recently. Many kids with gay friends who they would never offend use the term in a derogatory way. In the same segment, Nelso says, "I'd rather die than hate!" That line wasn't lifted up by anyone!!!

This whole politically correct thought police stuff has gotten way out of hand. In recent years, supposed "liberals" have been systematically eroding the first ammendment. People are supposed to refrain from uttering one word, or even having a thought that in some way, shape, or form may possibly offend somebody. I saw Louis C.K.'s recent standup up, adn he talks about how kids in grade school would call each other "faggot" when they did something lame, and that he had no idea what being a homosexual was all about then, it was just an insult. Crap, I guess if they had Nelson call the kid "stupid", then people with low I.Q.'s would be protesting that - or at least, somebody would protest it for them, being too stupid to do it themselves...

That comment is really degrading and unnecessary. Children should not be exposed to such terminology. There's enough anti-gay bias going on. You don't hear people saying "thats so *****y biggot straight." Putting down gays as the lowest form of life is bull. We are all humans and deserve to be treated with respect. Gays need to stand up for themselves and should have equal rights as all other tax payers do. We have a new President now, he will hopefully support gay rights as well.

I thought Nelson was funny however; I was quite offended by the insinuation that Lincoln was/is a homosexual. Come to think of it, in Lincoln's time a deviant would be lynched. Seems to me this group of people demanding special rights, telling the rest how we can and cannot use the Enblish language have too much power and really shouldn't be watching children's programming. Wait a minute, that bit about Lincoln shouldn't be in a cartoon! What if this person who rained hellfire and brimstone down on a couple of towns in some book that most people think of today as a fairy tale is really true? What if He rains that stuff down on us for allowing the same type of behavior? I mean, these people cannot even have their own children with out using unatural means! They shouldn't even exist let alone tell the rest of us what is right and what is wrong!

Oh my!The Simpsons is just like South Park, Family Guy and the show from the 80s, In Living Color. Does anyone remember when they use to spin a big wheel with white,black,gay,ect... to see who was going to be picked on during that show? It was so darn funny, even if they were picking on your own race or gender. If your skin is so thin, you can't take harsh ribbing like those shows dish out, turn it off! That's what that little button on the remote that says "power" is there for! I think it's funny and it's a great escape! I'm American Indian, Italian and Irish, when the Simpsons and Family Guy did a spoof on Native Americans and poked fun, you didn't see them standing outside of FOX ready to scalp them! Get over it and lighten up!

This is so gay!!! Who cares if a CARTOON kid said it! He didn't say Homo, faggot, lezzi, lesbo, queen, bologna smoker, butt poker, need I go on!? There are more important things to fight for. I have said "so gay" since the early 80's and NONE of my non straight friends are gunning for me, hell they even say it! The "so gay" thing to us means "stupid" for example, "do these pants make me look gay?" meaning stupid, like your Mom dressed your ass. This task force bitching must be made up of NERDS, yeah I said it! Now the nerds will cry too now. Grow up, get some thicker skin, hold your head up high, be proud of who you are and stop trying to ram your ideas or way of life down everyone else's throat like it's the law! Be happy in YOU! That goes for gay, straight, white, black, Asian, Hispanic, catholic, baptist, Hindu, born again, Jewish, female, male and anything in between!

The gays have always been to damn sensitive. I am part American Indian but do I protest certain holidays no, you have a right to celebrate what you want. I wish the GAY would get over themselves. If it makes the gay feel better, let them say ( that is so straight) so the we can cry about it and make head lines. I am sorry but I am a christian and I read my Bible and in the beginning it was Adam and Eve and God told them to go forth and procurate the Earth. When getting married they say to join this man and this woman in the holy state of matrimony. I have nothing against homosexuals I know many but I don't believe that is in the Bible as something reckonized by God as good. We often construe things to make them more exceptable and when others disagree we are wrong. We all have opinions and freedom of speech as long as we live in the USA. It is a cartoon and everyone gets made fun of. If you watch old films then you have heard the actors using "***" or "gay" look it up in the dictionary.

While I am not supportive of legislating language, nor gay, I did find the comment offensive. I try to impress upon the youth that I work with that comments like these are offensive and inappropriate. (I also have to keep reminding my husband not to say it!) However, it is the Simpson's that we're talking about, and I always have the option to change the channel, just like everyone else; there's no need to complain when I can take that simple action to solve the problem.

I have to say that I have watched "The Simpsons", "Family Guy", and "American Dad" for as long as I can remember and if this is the only episode of any of these shows that has offended the "Alternative Lifestyle" community, then they need to get out more. This simple expression is no where near as offensive as some of the slurs and references made in other shows about everyone else. Besides kids really do talk like this in school, and I am in no way saying it is right. All I am saying is that this language is common in our society so those people who are "offended" by it need to grow up. I know for a fact that I use it, and I have yet to offend anyone.

The Gay community is SO intolerant! Everything gets up their shorts, and THEIR comments are ALWAYS "so GAY!" The straight community has a Constitutional Right to use any word they choose. It is called FREE SPEECH ~ a concept only embraced by extremist groups when it satisfies their own requirements. All the ranting and raving by fringe lunatic groups will NEVER make any issue "right," or acceptable by mainstream society. So, go back to the privacy of your own home, keep your perversions to yourself, and stop trying to force acceptance of you deviations on the world. The world will never concede.

Everyone in this country needs to go to the blackboard and write "sticks and stones...." 10,000 times. We are raising generations of cringing ever offended people who cannot deal with any adversity. There are no offensive words, they are simply sound waves which requuire oversensitive ears to interpret them as such. We need to be careful about tearing our country down into little groups of hyphenated-Americans that each have their own little sets of grievences, rights, and rules. I am a white male who lives in the south. If I had a dollar for everytime I heard redneck, inbred slurs, I would be a wealthy man. Seems the only people it is still ok to slur is straight, whIf someone (or a show) says something you find offensive it is still free speech. Choose not to listen to that person or watch the show....they have this thing called a remote.

For those of you that just don't understand why this comment is so offensive to gay people, try this: substitute the word "gay" with the name of another group of people. For example, "That is so black," or "That is so Jewish," or "That is so Hispanic," or "That is so Muslim." Do it with any group you like. Now keep in mind that this would mean that something was stupid or silly. You are only kidding yourself if you could not now understand why gay people are upset about this exercise in ignorance. If this term were used with any other group, people would be justly outraged. So why is it o.k. to use gay people as the code word for stupid? This is just plain wrong and people who use this phrase should be condemned for saying it.

I think that the gays and lesbians are taking offense for no reason. I watch TV too and I see a lot of offensive material pertaining to how women are perceived and treated. I mean every commercial has a half naked woman pushing a car or a beer or a bra... these images sometimes bother me and I'm sure they bother other women too. I'm sure there have been many portrayals of women on TV that I haven't liked and there have been many shows that blatantly portray women as stupid *****... but I choose not to watch those shows because of their message. Perhaps the gays and lesbians are ****** off because such an awesome pop culture icon has seemingly turned on them. If you can recall the Simpsons have had many episodes revolving around homosexuality that were done tastefully... with of course a lot of comedy in there. For theses groups to be so offended over one phrase that basically means "that's so dumb" (at least that's what it meant when I was a teenager and heard it used a lot) then perhaps they are just turning into media watch dogs so they can point fingers... I believe our society has become tolerant of the lifestyle these people lead... but just like we don't want to be controlled by the overzealous religious nuts... we also don't want our everyday lives ruled by the gays and lesbians.

I support the rights of all people, but if you do not like what someone says on tv....don't watch. There are those of us not offended by every little joke, and find humor in poking fun at those that take themselves way too serious. Lighten up, there are a whole hell of a lot of derrogative terms for homosexuals, "gay" being very mild in comparison. Remember, there is a large number of Americans that are offended by tv programming that has homosexual themes, and would like to ban them from showing. The First Amendment, it can be a double edged sword.

My best male friend happens to be gay. He says things like "what a ***" and "that's so gay" all the time. He said that he knows many words have many meanings in different situations. He says that only a few insecure gay people feel the need to constantly bitch and whine about every little hurtful thing. As someone who's had two guys break into his house (thanks to the homophobic neighbor who was afraid to take him on one on one) I feel my friend knows better than any straight person what it's like to be hated for something you can't control about yourself. He said when he decided to give in to his feelings and admit he was a homosexual, he knew like with anything there is a price to pay. I'm a married stay at home mother and there's a price to pay for that too. People assume you're an idiot or lazy or a gold digger and they judge you. I however don't complain about the stereotypes I constantly see portrayed on tv or phrases like "sitting on their asses watching soaps and eating bon bons" if that were my life maybe I might be more offended. I think that's why my friend could care less about those kinds of attitudes, he knows they do not apply to him. Stop being so gay and get over it people. :)

hey, people, get over yourselves. It's a cartoon!! Actually, I long for the days when being gay, lesbian, homosexual, transgender or whatever wasn't something wonderfu or normal or something to aspire to. Keep it to yourselves and I'll keep my personal relationships to myself, too.

From now on I will boycott shows that degrade others. We were taught in elementary school using the "N" word to describe blacks is disrespectful. You don't hear folks saying "that's so *****y bigot straight." Yes gays and non gays need to lighten up with negative comments. Yes, gays and nongays should be able to take a joke as long as it doesn't go to far.

Peole have become too sensitive & knee jerk, and with the 'gay' political movement wanting to control things, and being too successful at it, we can't even have a BULLY on an adult CARTOON use a term without them whining. That's a term kids use, and it is used by a negative character on the show, not an angel- D'OH! All has to be polished by the GBLT forces, or denounced. They totally missed The Simpsons way of conveying messages because they are shallow & wimpy PC Police Squad.

If the gay/GBLT political agenda didn't hijack the word gay, it wouldn't be a problem. Gay used to mean happy, but they use language as a manipulative tool of power, like calling someone who disagrees with gay sex, or whatever issue HRC or Gay & Lesbian Task Force likes, as 'phobic' when the real meaning of a phobia is NOT just the bare idea of hating someone or having a mere/basic fear. They use 'homophobic' as a broad brush slam slogan, even wider than that anyway too many times- 'You don't fall in line with what we want, no matter if you really hate us or not, we'll label you as a hater, phobic, basher, mean-spirited (How subjective the 'spirit' can be used against someone!), etc.' Then again, hate is far overused, too, as well as 'bash'/gay bash, 'clobber' passages, etc. We have become too soft and wimpy. Sure- REAL hate should not be approved. Then again, I've seen plenty of hate and garbage by the GBLT community towards those who don't agree with the 'gay' agenda. If you don't think there is a gay agenda, please read "After The Ball" by 'pro-gay'/'gay' authors Marshall Kirk & Hunter Madsen. Out of print, unfortunately, but your local library (if they don't have it, ask them to check area/consortium libraries), or a used book source, like Amazon Marketplace. -

Gee, the "gays" need to get a grip on reality. There are "slurs" everywhere about every group - not just them. They need to do what everyone else has to do, let it roll off their backs and get over it. Who cares anyway - poor gay people. They already have self-image and complex issues. Maybe they're self-conscious because they're feeling so guilty. Don't they realize they contribute to their own problems? Stop making such an issue of everything. You don't see "straight" people announcing to the world in a parade that they're straight. These people need to get a life and quit bringing so much attention to their sexual preference. And the Simpsons is NOT a children's cartoon. It shouldn't be on in the early evening. Frankly, it shouldn't be on at all. Our society has taken on many of the attitudes of this show over the last 20 years.

Okay, I'm a lesbian, and I don't find such a comment offensive. Having two kids, one in middle school and another in high school, I know the term 'so gay' has not only been in common use among kids and teens for years, but by now has totally lost any meaning associated with gay bashing.

On a previous airing of a new show entitled, Privilaged, main character, Megan Smith, in an argument with long time best friend (male) tells him, "you've been acting like such a dick lately" The show itself is actually good. Hopefully this was a one time slip.

As a High School teacher I can assure you that the comment is definitely an insult and a gay slur. The kids use it all the time and we teachers strongly discourge it to the point of "writing up" kids who use it. I am very concerned that they actually used the slur on TV because by doing so gives it credibility, They should NOT have used it.

Gay people, I am tired of hearing about your rights over words. No one, I repeat, no one has rights over words. The answer is in the article, if children hear it at school, then it is in use, right? The Simpsons are a satire of society, and that usage is part of society and able to be satirized. I may be called insensitive, a bigot, or something else, but I am tired of hearing about words, and your supposed ownership of that word. SHUT UP!

Homosexuals don't own the word "Gay." The word gay was around long before any of the ones complaining were out of the closet. Oh wait, I shouldn't say closet, right. It's in many an old song and they aren't referring to homosexuals. Whenever someone talks about a rainbow are they talking about homosexuality? I hope not, because my little girl wears rainbow shirts.

The Simpsons slur everybody at one point or another. I can't think of a group they've missed. They're making fun of the common slurs, not bashing anybody. That has been done in comedy for years. Ever heard of Archie Bunker? Laverne & Shirley made fun of working class people. George & Louise made fun of whites & mixed race people. They make us laugh at ourselves & maybe give us a peek at how others could see us. Don't take yourselves too seriously.

I am a gay woman. Within the last three days, one group of California citizens voted away the rights of another group of California citizens saying only certain people can marry. You're lucky if you happen to one of those people. The same day a prominent gay character was abruptly cut from "Grey's Anatomy." The same day the phrase "You're so gay" was used as a joke line on a national TV show. If you're gay in this country, you know you are a second class citizen, reminded of it all the time. How do you think that makes me feel?

I've just about given up on negging the many hateful, ignorant and just plain stupid comments on this thread.
Reply
For the record:
The Simpson's does send up one and all. And we must uphold free speech as long as it doesn't create a situation of immediate danger.
On the other hand, we must call attention to hate speech whenever it occurs--for example, in so many posts in this thread.
Those who rail against gayness only salute their own defensiveness about something which does them, and can do them, no harm.
Often, they are hating something in themselves that they cannot openly acknowledge, but for which they've judged themselves harshly. Or revealing their need to scapegoat.
One test to see just how bigoted many of the comments here are is to substitute anti-black slurs for the anti-gay ones. That should CLEARLY reveal the irrational prejudice involved.
That people give themselves permission to be so openly anti-gay shows us how far gay people still have to go to gain, at the very least, a measure of protection from those who would otherwise deny it to them.
PS, here's a mantra for all the self-righteous haters: being gay isn't a choice. It's as normal and natural and "inevitable" to gay people as being straight is to straight people. -

I can't believe some people. Frist, if you don't like the shows on tv don't watch, if the "young" shows on the cartoon channels are to graphic don't have cable or satillite. Simple. It's called blocking the shows. There are plenty of other good shows out there to watch. And why are young childern up that late anyways, thats not the networks fault it's yours. Young childern should be in bed before 8 anyways. And second, shut up with this *** thing, people love to complain about words. Well I feel left out that I can't complain when they put some stupid, hick, white female on tv. Wheres my justice?? It's who you are, I'm who I am, get over it, the more we learn to make fun of our selves that better off we'll all be. It's just tv people. If you don't like it don't watch it. I have cable and there are plenty of shows and networks that I don't watch.

I heard the comment during the show. BTW, it has been used on many shows in the same context. Now to the point: words are not stagnant; they live and die and their meanings change over time. I hear kids say "That's so gay." all the time. It's a variant of what we used to say when I was a kid. If someone, almost always a male, did something that seemed weak, or effeminate, we would call them "faggot", and it meant precisely the same thing. Now is it offensive? I guess so, to some extent. But it is not the same thing as calling someone "gay" to hurt their feelings. And let's remember the context: Nelson is the bully on the show. He's been shown to be slovenly, slow, unkempt, rude, and inconsiderate. He's also the product of a broken home, his mother's an alcoholic who ignores him, and he clearly is crying out for help. Lisa, the heroine of the show, understands him, and he has shown her his tender side on many occasions. The creators of the show are trying to tell us all: This is not your father's Charlie Brown Halloween, despite the similarities. So Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), get over yourselves. The Simpsons is not a right-wing, conservative show that is trying to promote or discredit ANY person, thing, or organization. The show makes fun of everything and everybody, including it's right-wing conservative NETWORK!! You have MUCH bigger problems to deal with, like getting these ridiculous propositions reversed in California (of all places!!!!) and Arizona, etc. Frankly, I think ALL marriage should be banned. However, if we heterosexuals must suffer in matrimony, I have no problem is having homosexuals share the experience of the "joy" of marriage. It will open up a new industry: homosexual divorces.
Reply
Personally, I wish the homosexual community would give us heterosexuals back our word "gay" and find another word more appropriate to their choice of lifestyle. I like the word "gay". It used to mean happy and in good spirit. The heterosexual community does not have a monopoly on miserable people. -

I can't see the issue here. When I've heard it used, and sometimes by gays. It was used to make a point. Like that's so redneck, that's so oldschool, that's so hot, that's so Audrey (as in Audrey Hepburn).
When something is over the top, classic caricature hyberbole of a look or action.
Literally it meets the originally definition of the word "gay". -

The gay rights group wants to get an apology from Nelson for saying a word that can be taken in several different ways? This was meant for fun!! This was meant to be taken as a joke! What do they think the Simpsons is for!? To be serious and give true opinions!? If they are going to complain about them saying "the grand pumpkin is so gay" in a song, then I'm going to start complaining when anyone says..."ur so white!" You know if I started complaining about that I would be LAUGHED at! Why is this any different!? I also think its funny that they want the sentence taken out of the cartoon but when lincoln puts his hand on homers butt, well thats fine, or when lincoln and washington were shown making out, thats fine too, but they want to take out the WORD! Thats just funny. I hope everyone realizes that they make fun of everyone in this cartoon, whites, african americans, asians, jews, gays, presidents, kids, mentally retarded people....no one has said a word... and why...becuase its meant to be FUN!

Control the language, control the definition of terms and the use of words, and you control debate. Control debate and you cannot lose an argument. This has been going on for decades and gets more blatant as time goes on. Read 1984 by George Orwell. We have "hate crime" and "hate speech." Language is our method of communicating with each other. Freedom of speech is being nibbled away, and freedom of thought follows. Nobody wants to believe it can happen here. Nobody really believes tomorrow could really be much different than today. But reality ignores belief. Believe in it or not, reality doesn't care.

Enough! Being gay is not wrong but it is different. One can accept it as a right and still view it as different. Are we forced to think it is exactly the same? Its not and there are characteristic that are recognizable to some degree. Gayness is beyond humor?

I miss the days of Archie Bunker, the Jeffersons and Welcome Back Kotter when everyone got ripped on a little and it was OK. It was actually hysterical and all characters who ripped on eachother were depicted as idiots so that everyone knew how ignorant is was to speak and think that way. We do need to lighten up and embrace our differences by being able to laugh at ourselves.

Im sick and tired of homosexuals forcing the rest of us to see this "condition" as being normal. Dont we have rights too? Dont we have the right to teach our children that this is wrong? Next thing you know, they will want the homosexual lifestyle to be taught in schools, what then?
