Yeah I reported the spam and I saw the comments, some other offensive things are still on the page, I wonder where the line is drawn on that sort of thing?

BYW James, isn't it about time that my profile be taken down off the front page and give someone else a chance at 25 friends request, spam and people asking them to come 'share' pictures and receiving emails that others are tired of looking at their face? Thanks for putting me on the front page, but I think I should share the 'experience'.-

As usual, it's a fine line between removing junk and playing hall monitor. The worst stuff is being removed, the borderline stuff is subject to discussion (although we're always pleased to see the community slapping down the offensive posts as well).

As for your profile--sure, I suppose we could vary things a little :). I thought you might be enjoying your daily dose of marriage proposals, spam, offers to invest in an anti-gravity belt, etc.-

This is the same group of people who ordered Joe the Plumber be killed and hung a Sarah Palin mannequin by the neck as a Halloween joke! Sorry, your horrible behavior is reaping its reward. That was evident when you all supported Obama and the black community and they turned against you and voted down gay marriage.

Instead of saying "that's so gay", maybe the LGBT community would prefer "that's so fierce." Also, gay is defined as happy as well. Since it has a double meaning, then really no one can claim anything. Get over it or start a program in schools, where children say that frequently, so that they can learn which speech you find acceptable or not. Finally, NO this is not the same as saying the "N word," which only has one meaning and means something so far worse than "that's so gay" can ever mean! It's ridiculous how this can make people get up in arms. "That's so gay!" The funny thing is, in this context it has no correlation to the gay you're thinking of... it almost has a completely new meaning! So gay went from being happy and did people riot when the first person changed it to mean a form of sexuality. Blame it on that person for not considering it already had a meaning. Maybe that person would have made up a whole new word. Lesbians have their own word, transgendered people have their own word, but gay people use a word already in use. Now if you're thinking my argument is being blown out of proportion, that's what I think about yours! (response to all the people up in arms)

How about "heterosexually challenged"? What ever happened to the flamboyant homos that could take a joke? Unless they managed to patent the word "gay", they don't have any claim to it. Here's a thought, invent a word. Everyone is doing it nowadays.

Actually they should thank the Simpson for using Nelson to make such a remark, it's not like it was coming from someone that's character is nice or a good person. Nelson is an aszhole, you expect remarks like that coming from aszholes, just like in real life. You can say to your kids, do you want to sound like an aszhole like Nelson? just keep calling things you think are dumb, weird, odd or anything else negative- gay. You can seem just as ignorant and a bully like the cartoon character Nelson.

If I were gay maybe I'd feel the same way, people using a word to describe anything offensive weird etc...but in this case I think the sensitivity took over before they thought about it, and surely the whole gay community doesn't share their feelings about it, my Son doesn't , he understands Nelsons character is an aszwipe.

There's a deeper problem here than a single use on a TV show.
Reply
"That's so gay" is used all over the place to negatively describe things or situations. This use of "gay" does not match any of the old definitions, and therefore is likely an expression (conscious or subconscious) of revulsion towards homosexuals. The use of the phrase is extremely common in elementary schools long before children understand what "gay" means. So for years, children are bombarded with the equation of "gay" = "bad/stupid".
Enter young Johnny, who's just starting to realize he's a little different from the rest of the kids. Every time he's heard the word "gay" used, it's in a negative way. Think he's going to have an easy time accepting who he is? If he admits he's gay, does he have to think of himself as bad/stupid? Will others think of him that way?
I think the point here is that the Simpsons had an opportunity to open a discussion about how this word is used negatively and repetitively, and they just accepted that use.
This use of 'gay' is perhaps one of the most damaging, because it's done without malicious intent. People don't realize the psychological impact of the message it carries (gay = bad). The situation has absolutely nothing to do with homosexuality yet by calling something 'gay', the offender takes a pot-shot at the situation AND at homosexuals.-

You're right, I don't give a ship about the Simpsons. But I see this use of "that's gay" so often amongst children that don't even know what it means. Where are they learning to use the phrase? What effect does it have?
Reply
You have to be completely ignorant about subliminal messaging and advertising in general to not think that repeating a message over and over again does not have an effect.
And if I have to explain it, then it's unlikely you'll understand it. It's called negative re-inforcement, and it can be a very effective psychological tool.

You know these people are sooooooo stupid. Are you gay or Homosexual? A word only has negative meaning if those that are offended by it give it the power to do so. The GLSEN just empowered the word that much more by protesting its use. The first and true meaning of gay has nothing to do with homosexuality. So choose not to be gay be homosexual.
