Newly available accounts by independent military observers of the beginning of the war between Georgia and Russia this summer call into question the longstanding Georgian assertion that it was acting defensively against separatist and Russian aggression.

Instead, the accounts suggest that Georgia’s inexperienced military attacked the isolated separatist capital of Tskhinvali on Aug. 7 with indiscriminate artillery and rocket fire, exposing civilians, Russian peacekeepers and unarmed monitors to harm.

The rush to judgment is worrisome and would lead a reasonable person to suspect that subterfuge and propaganda tainted the first reports about the true cause of this conflict.

sure. called into question but unverifiable to anyone's satisfaction.

what amuses me is that both stories (thanks for the link Prog) talk about South Ossetia (and Abkhazia) as if they were previously independent nations whose independence the Russians were magnanimously protecting.

as i understand it, Russia moved into the 'restive provinces' when Georgia applied for NATO membership. that treatment was doled out for not remaining in their 'sphere of influence.' what does russia think the date is? 1850?

don't blink folks. the russians would be just as thrilled to pull this same stunt on Ukraine. if they won't be part of greater Russia, they sure won't be independent or West looking.

both stories are interesting but, in the end, pointless.

Russia has this tendency to act out their agressions on the little guys because they cannot act out on the really big guys. (if you get my meaning)
The US will not do anything unless they have something to sell anyway....

In my imagination I envision a U.S. security post in the region on Aug 8th. The officers are looking at each other in shock with their mouths hanging open. "Saakashavili did what?"

Of course later their reports would have to be rewritten to reflect the official White House doctrine.
