There nikkibabe goes talking about American values as trash. Stick to your own countries for comments like that.

This author does not even understand what the "Christian Conservatives" are all about. To start with there are Christians on both sides of the aisle. Why is there never a rant about the "Christians Liberals"? Christian ethics of real Christians are the same on both sides of the political spectrum. This causes many to hold their noses on some of the liberal agenda. Also since the rants about the Christian Conservatives also go against Christian Liberals many finally go to the conservative side feeling pushed out by the rabid atheistic liberals.
The main conservative values are limited government, lower taxes, solid defense for the country, and religious freedom.
For which of these are the Christian Conservatives being attacked? -

I agree, nikkibabe. I am very tired of hearing about religious groups forming blocs for the purpose of voting. If they are going to be political, they need to be stripped of their church status. Period.

And my tax money should not go to "faith-based" efforts where churches have the freedom to hire people based on their religious belief, which allows discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, etc. If they want to give it to non-profits, that's fine--but make it available to all non-profits, and make it clear that no discimination in hiring will be tolerated to use it.
This is one of the things where I vehemently disagree with Obama. He should not continue faith-based funding, let alone expand it. -

"Six in 10 white evangelicals ranked the economy as their most important issue—slightly less than the voting population as a whole."

I think it would have been better to say "3 in 5", because I saw the regrouping of all five people called the christian right at the corner table in the Cracker Barrel. They wouldn't go to Bob Evans - there were black people there, and in Denny's. -

I guess that would also include there being no true liberal compassionate party. I have never heard so much hate in the past 8 years as I have from democrats and leftists. And people call conservatives hate mongers? I guess as long as people agree with leftists, then they feel the love, as long as they don't, then they are hated. very telling.

The fact of the matter is, the "Christian Right" loves their money more then anything else. Hit them in the pocketbook and boy will they change real quick.

As one Republican said on FOX, "they don't want the government in their wallet. But they want to tell America how to live their lives.."
Oh so right.
Well, the bible pounders got what they wanted with Georgie Bush. Failed economy, a really bloated government, a frivolous war with one end in sight, and a national debt up from 3.8 Trillion when he took office to around 10 TRILLION national debt.
And as for the Republican candidate for President, Sen. McCain.... Well, just remember that the Pat Robertson crowd, Mr. Reid, formerly the head of the Christian Coalition, and Mr. Rove, all drug McCain through the mud, attacked him, and his adopted daughter back in 2000. Why? Simple, he didn't kiss their asses, didn't gush all over them, so they went with the guy who did, Georgie Bush.
And look what we have 8 years later.
The people had enough, and they voted.
The so called "Christian Right" has done more to damage the Republican Party and this country then they did to help it.
They simply have to get past the abortion issue. That's pretty much what they are based on. Even those politicians who have supported them for years have only built their political careers on the bodies of aborted fetuses.... and that's all they've done.
Of course, had there been a draft, right after 9-11, as we should have had, I can tell you this, we'd have already been out of Iraq, and Bush would have been voted out of office in 04. -

I think the same for people who voted for Obama. Sure, it is awesome we now have the first black president, but on a platform of socialism. Besides an emotional rant against christians and their selfishness toward their pocket book, what good has socialism ever had? If you respond with France or Canada, I would ask why do they come to America to get serious surgery? Historically, socialism and marxism has resulted in millions of death. If you are so against the selfish American right, have you offered to increase your tax giving over the past 8 years? It is an option that you have as an American. If you have not done this but believe in it, why does it take you voting someone into office for you to follow your conscience? Why does it take a law for you to do that? could it be selfishness?

It is possible to be a Christian and a liberal, just as it is possible to oppose abortion while at the same time giving others their right to choose. I think marriage was originally conceived to be a union between a man and a woman, but it is not my place to judge what gays or anyone else may think of this institution; in the social realm it is a civil union and no one has the right to abridge another's civil rights.

The First Amendment of the Bill of Rights prohibits the United States Congress from making laws "respecting an establishment of religion" or that prohibit the free exercise of religion, laws that infringe the freedom of speech. While our founders were mostly Christian, they were highly sensitive to the oppression of other beliefs. Our country was founded on freedom of thought and worship.
You have the freedom to worship as you please and to hold whatever political thought you may. Whatever someone else believes is no threat to your internal freedom. God doesn't take sides on these issues. He/She/It is a neutral bystander. That oneness only cares about your spiritual well-being. Judge not, then render unto Caesar. The Holy Spirit has no party affiliation. -

Well said Om...I think some Evangelicals are finally waking up to this reality. They have spent to much time judging and blocking the rights of others who don't conform to their doctrine.

Jesus was a threat because of the very fact that he proclaimed all men equal in the eyes of God.
This is why he broke bread with prostitutes and lepers alike and this is what drew the people to him.
All you have to do is look into the eyes of those who supported gay marriage ban and you will see not what Jesus represented, but the worst kind of hippocrite.
Those who would use the Lord to further their own false agendas.-

Those who would use Jesus' teachings of love to rationalize sin, are a huge abomination in the eyes of the Lord. Jesus also taught discernment of things that are not of God and warned of false prophets. Sodom and Gomorah were full of homosexuals, lesbians, and adulterous people and they were destroyed. Only referencing one part of the Bible and His teachings does not support the big picture. Armies that obeyed and followed God's teachings were always given victories. So the Lord you reference is about love and compassion but also with judgment. Maybe his own teachings about breaking bread with people most find loathsome could be a lesson to you in regard Christians. If you can't stand them, follow Jesus and love them and hang out with them. And by the way, his act of breaking bred with prostitutes and lepers is what caught the authorities attention in the first place. The same people that crucified Him. Were all drawn closer to Him because of that? I guess not.

I don't see any unified field theory at work in the Christian Right. They have fragmented along denominational lines, and lacking a lightning rod event, like the blue dress episode with Bill Clinton, will continue to attack only the same superficial issues that got them nowhere in the election. I hope they return their focus to helping people in need in these difficult times and let their political ambitions take a rest.

"but many Christian right leaders resist compromise and contend that, if anything, the GOP has strayed too far from its principles. "
What do they mean principles? Five of the seven judges that voted for Roe v Wade were Republican appointed. In addition, many people who voted for McCain in South Dakota obviously also voted against the abortion ban on the ballot in that state. The Republican leaders just use the evangelicals. They need their vote but they know that the majority are not for an abortion ban. So they blah blah blah which makes political light weights like Dobson and his followers happy, but they don't actually do anything which makes the majority happy.
In reality the evangelicals are the perfect supporters. All they expect is talk. No action necessary. -

The pages of history are largely written by the victors, and then often by the few who were literate and had an agenda. The King James version of the Bible has changed ennumerable times in my lifetime - flowing with the language and perceptions of the day - and that version was derivitive and abridged to begin with. God's word may be constant, but it may be in a language we don't often understand. Although labels can have crippling limitations, perhaps this is the basic difference between literal conservatives and open minded liberals.

Obama voters...you won! Why are you still so angry? It does not make any sense? Obama does not even have power yet! The issue of being angry, why?...was not him getting elected that the answer to your prayers? Lets hope the next 4 years live up to that dream.
Reply
I don't understand the anger when you won? Maybe it is fear about the next 4 years. Even Biden stated they would be seriously tested and respond in ways that people would judge them but that we need to have faith in them. Sounds like the rest of the world is not so willing to play nice in the sandbox.
Maybe we should just talk to them and love them more? Maybe that will change them. Just love them...the Obama motto for 2009. Either it works, or we will become more of a laughing stock than ever.
